Chapter 1359: Chapter 666: Extreme Stillness Inspires Movement: Guest Appearance with the Diggers_2
After a hearty breakfast, the convoy set off once again.
There was a little town near the destination, and when Sean Knight arrived, he noticed the bustling activity.
The convoy stopped outside the town, and the team member responsible for gathering information made a quick visit and returned promptly.
"Boss, news about a World War II munitions warehouse nearby has spread. Many diggers came here for that. According to locals, they’ve been here for a week already, and some have unearthed remnants of WWII-era tanks," the team member reported.
Elijah Hastings and the others looked toward Sean Knight.
Sean contemplated for a moment upon hearing the news; his first reaction was to leave.
However, he thought it over and said,
"Let’s go, we won’t stay here. Let’s take a look there. If there’s something, we will dig, if not, then we’ll move on."
Holding multiple coordinates in his hands, Sean really hadn’t planned on stubbornly sticking to one place.
In fact, he believed that as long as there was something substantial in one of those coordinates, it would be worth it.
The convoy passed through the town, heading toward the target. Many townspeople took notice. Some immediately started their cars and followed—clinging to the strong to eat is the survival wisdom of the less fortunate.
Not far out of town, Sean and his crew saw people already digging in the jungle on both sides of the highway. Old, outdated guns, bullets, and other equipment from the WWII era were laid out along the road, as well as military uniforms and such.
After watching for a while, Sean realized that these items were definitely not unearthed from this place; they were probably goods gathered by middlemen from the diggers, trying their luck.
Some laypeople, not having dug up anything and too embarrassed to return empty-handed, naturally could buy something here—authentic or not, it’s always good for boasting.
And sure enough, there were people haggling with vendors at their stalls.
With Sky Eye continuously active, Sean disappointingly noticed that although this used to be a battlefield, underground there were only sporadic weapons and bullet shells. The larger items amounted to little more than shell casings, unexploded landmines, and abandoned vehicle frames.
The further forward they went, the more vehicles lined the road, a sign that this piece of news had attracted a considerable number of diggers, yet few had found anything of value.
The size of Sean’s convoy was relatively large, so many people on the roadside were paying attention to them, their gazes filled with wariness, envy, jealousy, and other complicated emotions.
Without a command from Sean, the convoy proceeded slowly and didn’t stop.
Almost ten kilometers out from town, with no more cars on the roadside, Sean still had not ordered a halt, prompting Douglas Cooper to ask,
"Boss, do we continue forward?"
Sean, still using Sky Eye, responded without turning his head,
"Continue—the underground here should still be a battlefield. Given the terrain, it should have been the site of a trench war. Let’s go further and see if there’s anything to be found."
In fact, Sean had noticed that the underground weapons and equipment had grown more frequent, suggesting that this place was likely a contested strategic point for both fighting parties.
Could it be that there was a munitions warehouse nearby, and the intense fighting was due to it?
Looking ahead at the smooth terrain of the carriage-way, Sean said,
"Turn the car off the road; we’ll go in on foot and take a look."
The driver followed Sean’s instructions and steered the car into the wilderness—the forest here was sparse, with trees of all thicknesses, aged several years, over a decade, and even several decades old.
"Damn, I’m getting a bit envious; the resources here are really abundant!" Douglas exclaimed as he got out of the car, unable to hold back his complaint.
He noticed many fish of various sizes swimming in a small river nearby.
Unafraid of humans.
Sean chuckled and walked leisurely into the forest.
At that moment, two pickup trucks drove up and stopped by the road, one after the other.
A young man jumped down from one, seeming afraid someone else would get ahead, and hurried over to where Sean and his team were. Puffing for breath, he said,
"Hello—I’m a local; can I be your guide?"
Sean and his group looked at each other, somewhat surprised.
They were mainly shocked that the fellow was speaking fluent Mandarin, and quite standard at that!
Elijah and the others then looked to Sean.
With Sky Eye open, Sean could see that the young man’s attitude was earnest, and he didn’t seem to be deceitful.
So, Sean was about to nod in agreement.
Just then, someone shouted,
"Don’t agree to it!"
It was also said in Mandarin, but this one was even more fluent!
Sean turned to look at the speaker, the owner of the second car. This man... looked more handsome than the first one, with a more pronounced set of features, but Sean didn’t like him.
He was a Jewish half-breed.
"He’ll cheat you," said the Jewish half-breed as soon as he saw Sean looking his way. He continued,
"He’s a local from the town, and it was they who spread the rumor that there was a WWII warehouse here. It’s also because of this rumor that a large number of diggers were attracted here. These locals took the opportunity to act as guides and sell local products to make money.
But in reality, it’s a scam."
"That’s not true. This really was a World War II battlefield! We grew up hearing from the elderly that there were warehouses for both the Soviet and German sides around this battlefield... The elderly used to sneak in and steal clothes from the warehouse when they were kids!"
