Chapter 1274: 638
Layer by layer, Sean Knight gathered the sand and saw it—a man-made building within the dune, much larger than the previous two.
However, it was only after most of the sand was removed that Sean Knight realized that the walls of this concrete "warehouse" were much thicker than the first two.
Moreover, they used a reinforcing steel bar frame, with thumb-thick steel bars forming a densely interwoven mesh. It seemed unlikely that they could break through using the original method.
But—the warehouse had to be breached because it didn’t store food or weapons, but bundles and bundles of banknotes from around the world—US Dollars, British Pounds, Italian Lira, German Marks, Israeli Old Shekels, and Rubles, including those from the Soviet era, and so on.
Nearly every renowned currency from the world’s major economies last century was present here.
Of course, US Dollars and British Pounds were the most abundant, with the area of the warehouse almost being six to seven hundred square meters, nearly half of which was filled with Dollar cash!
Seeing so much money yet being unable to get to it, Sean Knight was indeed a bit anxious.
However, he also knew that haste wouldn’t help—after all, a man-portable rocket was out of the question here. Even if the walls could be breached, the money inside would burn up completely.
He looked around; the building did have a big iron gate, but it was about a meter thick, and the locks were highly complex mechanical ones. Without the right key, it would be very difficult to open.
Having no choice, Sean Knight decided to stick with the old method and slowly blasted his way through the wall with explosives.
Every time he blew out a chunk of concrete, he encountered the reinforcement mesh, and Sean Knight had to saw through it, pulling out a saw from his spatial realm.
But the reinforcing bars were so thick that it took almost half an hour to saw through one, and Sean Knight knew this approach wouldn’t work.
If only he had a high-pressure water knife, he could cut through the steel bars directly—of course, that was just wishful thinking.
To have such a large machine there wouldn’t be feasible, and there wasn’t enough electricity to power it— yet, this gave Sean Knight a reminder that if he could get his hands on such a water knife, he should also get a high-powered generator.
Of course, that was just for future consideration.
He dismissed the idea of breaking through the wall and sat beside it, pondering.
Then Sky Eye quickly found the weak spot—the four sides of the warehouse, including the top, were framed with reinforcing steel mesh, but the foundation was just concrete—though the foundation went nearly three meters underground, it was much easier to break through concrete than through those steel bars.
Having realized this, Sean Knight immediately sprang into action.
He applied sticky explosives directly to the ground, pulled the detonation ring, and ran away as fast as he could.
"Boom!" The explosion caused a large amount of sand to fall. If Sean Knight hadn’t collected enough sand earlier, the newly made corridor might have been buried.
After clearing the sand from the blasted area, Sean Knight discovered a basin-sized hole on the ground.
He then began a continuous process of blasting.
After four or five hours of tedious, repetitive work, Sean Knight succeeded in blowing a corridor to the warehouse above—just before daybreak—at the cost of a dozen boxes of money being blown open, some shattering directly, others fluttering like scattering blossoms inside the warehouse.
Waiting a long time for air to circulate, Sean Knight then crawled inside.
The continuous explosions were underground and in a deserted area, but Sean Knight worried about the risks of delays. He planned to quickly move the money and then make a swift exit.
However, still uneasy, after having collected half the money, Sean Knight had a sudden urge and immediately crawled out of the hole to check the outside situation.
Just as he emerged, he heard a low rumble from the sky!
A drone!
When Sean Knight looked up, he saw a drone circling a dune not 500 meters away in the distance, with the green lights on its body flashing on and off.
Someone had noticed!
Sean Knight realized it was too late to run. With a thought, he quickly returned to the cave entrance, removed a simple square tin box and set it upright, resembling a foreign street phone booth. He clambered inside and just before shutting the lid, he released a large quantity of sand.
As the sand buried the box in an instant, Sean Knight dived inside.
The iron box had a door that opened from the inside, providing Sean Knight a space he could survive in for a while—if it got too difficult, he had plenty of oxygen cylinders in his spatial realm to sustain him.
The sand covered any trace of his digging. However, the sand wasn’t as thick as before, so Sean Knight’s Sky Eye could still peer out to keep an eye on the drone’s movements.
After more than ten minutes, the drone flew over to this dune and hovered above.
Sean Knight looked up at the drone, not entirely sure of its working principles.
If it used infrared, he wondered if it could detect him under several meters of sand?
If it relied on microlight, then he would be safe.
The drone didn’t hover above for long, so Sean Knight was somewhat relieved.
As the drone moved about two hundred meters away to another dune, Sean Knight immediately packed up the box—along with a large amount of sand—and re-entered the hole he had blasted earlier.
Having entered, Sean Knight quickly emptied the remaining cash, then crawled back out.
The drone was nowhere to be seen.
But at that moment, Sean Knight didn’t dare make any more moves. He simply crawled back into the warehouse—the vast space inside had been ventilated for quite some time, enough for Sean Knight to spend the night.
