Chapter 1253: Chapter 631 Not Everyone Deserves Sympathy
Dawn, a small squad was moving quietly near the borderline.
From time to time, the sound of gunfire and the whizz of rockets crossing the sky could be heard.
This boundary was a bit far from the battle zone, and there were no patrolling personnel nearby.
The one leading the squad took out a folded carpet from the backpack and placed it over the iron wire mesh before stepping on it and jumping over.
One after another, the others followed suit, and the last team member gathered up the carpet.
Having crossed the iron wire mesh and entered the war zone, they sprinted forward quickly and soon reached a small cluster of low shrubbery.
Although the shrubs were sparse here, they still offered some concealment. The group stopped to rest.
"Boss, why didn’t we just go with the humanitarian aid trucks?" someone whispered.
"Although those relief vehicles are allowed to pass, the inspection is definitely very strict," Sean Knight replied. "People like us would likely be considered from the military and then become the focus of intense surveillance. So it’s better not to trouble the aid efforts."
This time Sean Knight and his team did not bring more team members.
It was mainly for safety and stealth.
The other team members, if injured in the war zone, might not be as resilient as Elijah Hastings and his two companions, who had undergone energy transformation and had a higher life intensity than ordinary people.
Moreover, should there be complications, Sean Knight could use energy for healing, but the results might not be as good for others.
"Boss, you really didn’t have to come," Elijah Hastings urged again. "This time it’s really dangerous—the shells flying in the sky and the bullets fired over the ground, they are truly indiscriminate!"
"Yeah, it’s just our new soldier platoon leader; you don’t really have any connection to him," Lincoln Harrington added.
"If those lady bosses knew about this, I bet our dividends would get docked completely," Douglas Cooper joked.
Sean Knight twisted open a bottle of water, drank it, then put the bottle away, and chuckled:
"Don’t think I’m doing anything heroic. I’m here to find something very important. This item, currently located where you guys will be passing through.
And besides, you wouldn’t be able to retrieve it without me. So essentially, this trip is like before—you are still my bodyguards. The main thing is, it’s quite chaotic over there, and I’m worried that if I don’t retrieve it now, once the fighting ceases, that place will probably be razed to the ground, making it impossible to find."
Having said this, Elijah Hastings and the others had no objections.
"Let’s not be too hasty," Elijah Hastings, looking around cautiously, instructed, "The basic strategy is to move at night. Move during the day if we can, if not, we rest and lie low."
"That’s exactly what I was thinking," Sean Knight quickly interjected, "It’s okay to rescue people. But we can’t do a ’Saving Private Ryan’ kind of operation, where we risk ourselves trying to save someone. If that happens, even if we save your platoon leader, we’d probably regret it for a lifetime."
"Understood," Lincoln Harrington and Douglas Cooper responded.
Of course, that was the plan, but what would actually happen would depend on the situation at hand.
The four of them rested for a while and then continued on their way.
This area was relatively remote, and they didn’t encounter anyone for roughly an hour.
The sky gradually darkened, and the vague outline of some buildings appeared ahead.
"Let’s go over there and try to find a car, then head for the city," Elijah Hastings whispered, "with the aim of reaching the nearest city by this night."
The country where Elijah Hastings and his team were located, though an aggressor in the war zone, was not peaceful itself. There was a significant number of the opponent’s people infiltrated, symbolizing a blossoming in the heart of the enemy.
As such, scrutiny here was also intense.
The buildings ahead formed a small village. At the village’s end, some courtyards had lights on, but there weren’t many people on the roads.
There were occasional barking dogs, but none came out.
"We’ll split up and act separately; whoever finds a car drives it to the village’s end to regroup," instructed Elijah Hastings as the one in command, speaking softly.
The four of them quietly dispersed into the village.
Sean Knight reached a narrow path, saw no one around, and since there wasn’t any monitoring equipment, he stealthily pulled out an unlicensed second-hand off-road vehicle from the spatial realm and drove it to the village’s end.
Hearing the sound of the car, Elijah Hastings and the others were somewhat surprised, but quickly converged.
"Boss, that’s some luck," Douglas Cooper gave Sean Knight, who was in the driver’s seat, a thumbs up.
"Get in, let’s hurry," Sean Knight said without further ado.
Sean Knight moved to the back seat, while Lincoln Harrington drove the car with Elijah Hastings sitting in the passenger seat, holding a mobile phone and checking the satellite navigation map.
As they neared the city, the number of vehicles on the road increased.
Most were civilian cars, but they could also see many with people in camouflage uniforms holding guns, not knowing whether they were military personnel or reservists, but their excited and agitated expressions while brandishing their rifles were evident.
"Look, that person..."
Suddenly, they saw a few men in military uniforms on the side of the road, pressing a person who looked like a civilian against a tree.
Those military men, armed with automatic rifles, were berating the civilian in a stream of invective.
It’s unclear what they were saying.
Sean Knight and his team could only glance for a moment before continuing to drive forward.
They hadn’t driven far when a gunshot sounded from behind.
Everyone fell silent.
After a while, Sean Knight’s emotions calmed down again.
