Chapter 1218: Chapter 619: Playing Robin Hood for Once
The convoy of pickup trucks didn’t encounter any interception as they drove out of the city.
Clearly, the situation hadn’t yet reached the general, or rather, the general hadn’t received reliable intelligence to set up an effective defense.
This brought a wave of relief to Sean Knight and his team.
Once they left the city, the traffic on the main road grew sparse, and the occasional street lamps simply disappeared. The highway became uneven due to occasional bullet holes. The buildings beside the road transitioned from multi-story to single-story houses, and some were just ruins.
Overall, although the war had vanished from this country two years ago, the destruction it caused had not yet been fully repaired.
The cars drove on the increasingly dark road, and then a forked road appeared ahead.
If the itinerary remained unchanged, they should take the road on the right and return to the tribe.
Suddenly, Sean Knight spoke up:
"Take the road on the left, let’s change our destination and head to Kandahar."
The command from Sean Knight surprised everyone, but they quickly understood.
Although the general couldn’t catch up with Sean Knight’s team, he could set up checkpoints on their route back home with just a phone call.
On one hand, you have the influential general in the capital, and on the other, an investor from a rural tribe overseas.
The public security officers in the cities along the way knew who was more significant.
Unless they flew directly back to the base, Sean Knight’s convoy would face numerous potential interceptions.
Changing directions could break this possibility outright.
So, this decision was immediately accepted by everyone.
The convoy continued on the road, maintaining silence except for the occasional bumps from the rough terrain, until a phone call came through to Elijah Hastings’s mobile phone.
"Boss, the tribal warriors were stopped at the checkpoint when they were leaving the city."
"I’ll call Henija right now," Sean Knight said immediately. "Tell them to protect themselves, not to initiate conflict, but if the other party shoots, don’t hold back!"
Sean Knight made the phone call to Henija.
"Mr. Henija, this is Sean Knight."
"Mr. Knight, have you arrived in Kabul?"
"I’m not in Kabul," Sean Knight replied evasively to Henija, then said, "Some tribal warriors I sent ahead have been detained. I’d like to ask for your favor in ensuring their safety and hope they won’t suffer any harm."
"What do you mean? Are they leaving? Or, Mr. Knight, is there something we don’t know about happening on your end?"
Hearing these words, Sean Knight knew that Henija must already be aware of some situations at the manor, but certainly not all of them.
"There’s an urgent matter in the tribe, and I’ve called in the tribe’s elite, as you know. If anything happens to them, you’re aware of what the tribal elders’ response would be. As for me, I planned to go ahead of time, but there’s something else. I heard the general has already cleared out the manor; that’s great, thank you Mr. Minister of Internal Affairs for gifting me the house. When appropriate, I’ll send someone to take over."
The jousting between Sean Knight and the general was a private understanding between the two men. The general laid out the terms, waiting for Sean Knight to respond.
Sean Knight responded without the general noticing, achieved his goal, and when leaving, there was a slight flaw.
By now, the general must have guessed the specifics, otherwise he wouldn’t have stopped the tribal warriors.
However, in comparison, Mr. Henija, the mastermind of the open conspiracy and the Minister of Internal Affairs, received far less information.
So, he could only guess.
Sean Knight was aware of this, so he could casually say some things to distract Henija.
Although Henija wasn’t easy to deceive, with the unequal distribution of intelligence information, he couldn’t ascertain the truth and had to trust that this was real.
At least the detention of the tribal warriors was real.
Although this was a military matter, Henija would not allow the military to actually imprison or even encircle and kill those of the armed tribe.
That would be tantamount to dismantling the foundation of the organization.
After Henija agreed to take care of the situation, Sean Knight immediately had Elijah Hastings send a message back to the tribal warriors.
Not long after, there was a reply from the tribal warriors:
"We are required to stay in the city for two days. We can return to the tribe only after two days."
"Then go back to the hotel," Elijah Hastings relayed Sean Knight’s message. "Stay at the hotel for two days, then wait until the ban is lifted before returning to the tribe."
"But we haven’t done anything..." The leader of the tribal warriors sounded disheartened, "We haven’t been of any help to you..."
"You’ve already done a lot for me. It was quite presumptuous of me; in fact, you’ve tied up most of the forces that have been trying to find me. That’s how my business could be completed—you’ve done well already."
After consoling the tribal warriors, Sean Knight and his team finally relaxed completely and rushed to another metropolis.
Sean Knight’s idea was to either directly detour to another city and take a longer route back to the tribe or to go straight to Kandahar and have Charles Young fly a plane there for them to return.
After all, it would be very difficult even for that general to intercept an airplane.
The pickup truck convoy drove for four or five hours and then stopped.
They veered into a forest and rested there.
It wasn’t long until daybreak; if the pursuers followed in this direction, Sean Knight and his team would still have time to respond.
Luckily, the night passed without incident, and they rested until the morning before the convoy set off again.
