Chapter 1134: Chapter 591: Such a Waste! These Cannibals
Ant species from all sides were converging on this spot.
The ones that covered the medicine powder with soil were dead in droves, then carried away by the ants behind them.
It was unclear whether they were used as food or simply discarded elsewhere.
Seeing that in just over ten minutes the area with the medicine powder had thinned out by a ring, Sean Knight knew he truly couldn’t wait any longer.
If it was just himself, it would be very simple, as his spatial realm was full of equipment, any one of which could solve the problem.
But with Elijah Hastings here, it wasn’t convenient.
Of course, if there was no other way out, Sean wouldn’t care so much.
"There should be a corridor below us, let’s hide in there first!" Sean said to Elijah while continuing to pry the stones that blocked the entrance, "Once we’re inside, we’ll seal the stones back up. Those scorpion species shouldn’t be able to get in... "
"Boss, ... won’t we just be sealing ourselves inside then?" Elijah raised his concern.
"I suspect that even though these ants were drawn here by the indigenous people, those locals probably can’t control the ants for too long. After a while, when the ants can’t find us, they might leave. Then we’ll be able to get out."
After some thought, Elijah agreed that it made sense.
"Then let’s hurry up."
In a joint effort, they quickly opened up a hole large enough for a person to pass through, and Sean went in first, then said to Elijah:
"Come on in. Inside... there’s a large number of dead scorpions."
Sean trod on the scorpion carcasses, producing a crisp cracking sound.
"Boss, below here... it’s not going to be like the desert, with an insect nest, right?" Suddenly, Elijah was afraid.
If it was indeed an insect nest, entering it would be walking into a trap!
"It shouldn’t be." Sean picked up a carcass to examine and said, "These scorpions seem to have died centuries ago. Look ... all from the same time, no recent ones. There must have been a scorpion nest inside indeed, but in the end, the entrance was blocked and the scorpions perished."
With his Sky Eye, Sean saw that there were indeed several corridors below, but it seemed like a long time since any bug had crawled through them.
His intuition also told him there was no danger present, so this place should be safe.
After hesitating for a while, Elijah passed in the stones and then followed Sean inside.
Looking out, he saw the ants were still transporting soil to cover the medicine powder with the diligence of machines. Every third ant was dead.
Their movements were tense and orderly.
The monkey from earlier had long since disappeared, many scorpions had become ant food, and the rest had scattered.
The shadows of the Maya Tribe locals had also vanished.
At the moment, these ants were the enemy.
Elijah began sealing the bricks one by one.
"Here," Sean took out a small package of medicine powder, "sprinkle this stuff in the cracks in the stones, it can keep the ants at bay."
Elijah was stacking stones while Sean sprinkled the medicine powder, and soon they had resealed the dismantled wall.
The room plunged into darkness.
Then there was light—Sean took out an emergency light from his backpack.
"Let’s go, explore what’s downstairs," Sean said, holding the lamp and pointing to the corridor leading down.
"Boss, why don’t we just stay here?" It was clear Elijah preferred not to face the unknown dangers.
"Alright, you stay here and keep watch," Sean handed the light to Elijah and pulled out another one for himself, "I’ll go down and have a look..."
"Boss..." Elijah naturally didn’t want Sean to take any risks.
"Don’t worry, I know my limits!" Sean said laughing, "I’ll come right back up if there’s any trouble. Even if there are scorpions or something, it’s not likely they’ll simply trap me down there."
Considering Sean’s abilities, Elijah nodded in agreement.
"I’ll go down with you," Elijah decided.
"You’d be better off guarding here. If the ants retreat early and those locals come over, you staying here could block them," Sean decided otherwise.
Elijah nodded, placed his backpack against the wall, and stood guard.
Though his senses were not as sharp as Sean’s, with careful attention, he could still detect any noise from the ants outside.
Sean descended with the emergency light in hand.
The stairs were slightly damp and slippery; it was unknown whether there was a subterranean river below or if the place was just humid.
Soon the stairs ended, leading to a stone chamber.
Judging by the height, Sean estimated they had reached about ground level.
To his surprise, the room contained numerous skeletons, mostly leaning against the walls.
In the middle of the stone chamber was a three-tier altar.
Atop the altar were several stone utensils, now broken, and half a stone scepter lay on the ground.
The floor was also covered with a layer of scorpion carcasses—Sean guessed these people were likely killed by scorpions.
Sean remembered reading online that the primary function of Maya Pyramids was for sacrifice.
It seemed he was right.
Four stone doors surrounded the area, each leading downstairs but similarly blocked.
Sean approached one of the blocked stone doors and used his Sky Eye to look beyond it.
Unexpectedly, there was a restroom behind the stone door—although from years ago, it was still discernible that the place had been used as a toilet by those people.
Or rather, it was used as a toilet by some later group.
The initial builders of this room had used it as a warehouse. Behind the door were steps descending further, followed by a row of three stone chambers.
