Chapter 1098: Chapter 579: Public Enemy!
When the auctioneer took the stage, an additional table had appeared beside him.
"I have just received a notification," the auctioneer said, his face stern, "that all successful bidders for land must immediately transfer the money to a specified account, and we will have specialists on hand to carry out the procedures at any time."
This news did not come as a surprise to anyone; after all, it seemed normal.
It was perfectly ordinary to exchange payment for goods. If someone won a bid for land but did not have the money, wouldn’t that be deceiving everyone?
Many eyes turned toward Sean Knight.
After all, the first half of the auction had been a solo performance by Sean Knight.
To put it bluntly, this was obviously an action targeted at Sean Knight.
Under the scrutiny of the crowd, Sean Knight stood up and walked over to the table to sit down.
Clearly, Sean Knight was not short of money.
This move disappointed many who had hoped to witness some drama.
Then the Jewish man seemed to touch his ear and say something before dropping his hand.
The attractive female staff member at the table said to Sean Knight:
"Please transfer the money for the land you’ve purchased into this account."
Sean Knight took out his card, just about to transfer the money, when the auctioneer spoke up again:
"Additionally, foreign participants in the auction who want to bid on the land must make one-third of the payment in gold!"
The moment these words were uttered, the room erupted into an uproar!
After all, at least one-fourth of those present were foreigners!
Who would bring so much gold with them?
"This is the latest notice we’ve received." The auctioneer knew this condition was rather excessive, but as a staff member, he had no power to change it and could only explain:
"After all, everyone is aware that the US Dollar has been continuously devalued due to excessive issuance, and as the Americans’ capacity to repay the national debt falls far short of expectations, confidence in the US Dollar is lacking. To ensure our country’s interests, it is necessary to make part of the payment in gold..."
This rationale was clearly far-fetched!
Many people raised their voices in protest once again.
However, what happened next silenced everyone.
A squad of military police entered from outside, carrying batons and standing guard around the auction house.
They were clearly there to prevent any disruptions.
Although still dissatisfied, no one spoke up anymore.
Since the other side had established rules and resistance was not an option, compliance was the only choice.
All eyes once again turned to Sean Knight.
Some looked on with barely disguised schadenfreude!
Sean Knight was the biggest winner in the first half; if he couldn’t produce the required gold, not only would his deposit be forfeited, but the lands would be re-auctioned.
Would that not give everyone another chance?
The Jewish man, white person number twelve, and Andrew Petrov all watched Sean Knight.
Even Stella Gray was looking at Sean Knight—all of them hoped that Sean Knight would not be able to pay for the gold.
Stella Gray turned to the person beside her and asked:
"Isaac Myers, do we have access to gold? How much can we gather?"
"At most, fifty kilograms," Isaac Myers replied in a low voice. "Boss, you’re not thinking of helping him, are you?"
"No, no, no," Stella Gray shook her head, "When those lands are up for re-auction, we must secure the farmhouse of ten hectares!"
The Jewish man seemed convinced that Sean Knight couldn’t come up with the gold.
Andrew Petrov looked at Sean Knight with a hint of pity, as if to say, if you had collaborated with me, I might have been able to get you some gold.
"Mr. Knight, you need to pay 21 million dollars and gold worth 1.05 million dollars," the staff member urged.
"1.05 million dollars? That’s just a little over one hundred kilograms," Sean Knight observed everyone’s expressions attentively.
Alright, now whether they were compatriots, those who claimed to be friends, or those targeting him, he could ignore them in the upcoming process.
"Do you have it?" the staff member asked, a bit surprised, as she too was aware that this was an additional clause targeted at Sean Knight.
Unless one could foresee the future, how could someone possibly have prepared so much gold?
"Of course I do," Sean Knight said. "Let me make a phone call."
Sean Knight pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and then simply stated:
"Bring over the two boxes in the trunk. Be careful, the items are a bit heavy. Don’t break the boxes."
Sean Knight’s voice wasn’t loud, but with everyone in the site waiting for his reaction in utter silence, his words were heard by all.
What did that mean? Did he actually have the gold?
The auctioneer forgot to speak.
The Jewish man looked disbelief-stricken.
How could this be possible?
I came up with this ridiculous rule on the spur of the moment, after pulling strings with someone in the Department of Commerce. You’re telling me you were prepared for it?
Even the worms in my stomach couldn’t have known about this, as it was conceived just a short time ago.
Of course, these thoughts remained unspoken.
Sean Knight said to the auctioneer:
"Please wait five minutes. In five minutes, the gold I’m carrying will arrive. Then I’ll be able to make the payment."
The auctioneer nodded eagerly.
Joking aside!
With such a solemn promise, it was clearly serious.
This potential big spender was like a patron to him.
His income from today alone was equal to six months of work. How could he not afford to be polite?
No one else raised an objection.
If they couldn’t allow even five minutes, the targeting would be far too blatant.
The majority still wanted to see what would happen; they either did not have gold or didn’t have the means to acquire it in a short time.
