Chapter 1095: Chapter 578: So What If You’re Laying Siege?
The doors of the Auction Room closed, and the Auctioneer walked up from backstage, while a clerk sat next to the table.
As soon as the Auctioneer spoke, Sean Knight became happy, for he was using English.
Actually, he had been somewhat worried because they hadn’t brought Mary Powell with them when they came over.
However, later he noticed that many of the international bidders seemed to have no translators with them, so Sean Knight breathed a sigh of relief.
Now it looked like the auction organizers were being quite considerate of them.
"Thank you, everyone, for coming to this auction," said the Auctioneer, a local man in his early thirties with a rather cold voice and a slight accent, but understandable, "The auction begins now. Land No.1, located to the east of Ankar Town, totals seventeen hectares, with a reserve price of 150,000 dollars. The auction begins."
Nobody immediately called out a bid; all were looking over the detailed documents for Land No.1.
Land No.1 had an irregular pentagon shape, composed of four modules joined together, with a river nearby. Previously, it was mainly used for rice cultivation, which had not been completely harvested yet. The documents indicated that the rice on the land belonged to the previous owner and that the transfer procedures could be initiated after the auction, but the actual handover would have to wait until the rice harvest was complete.
Then someone raised their hand:
"One hundred and fifty-five thousand dollars."
"One hundred and sixty thousand dollars!"
...
Obviously, land for less than 10,000 dollars per hectare, below market value, was mainly due to the fact that it couldn’t be transferred right away.
The price of the land quickly rose to 180,000 dollars, already higher than the market value.
But everyone’s enthusiasm for bidding did not diminish, and instead, it increased.
Everyone knew that as long as you got the land and planted food, you were bound to make a profit when harvest season arrived.
So, by investing a bit more now, the future was more secure.
"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars!" This time, the Jewish man was the one raising his hand, number nine.
The woman from China, Stella Gray, also raised her hand:
"Two hundred thousand dollars!"
This bid made many people freeze, resulting in a full half a minute with no further bids.
It was a perfect debut for Stella Gray.
A glint of triumph flashed in her eyes.
Very good.
But then, the man who had been making a phone call raised his hand:
"Two hundred and ten thousand dollars."
He nonchalantly broke the price that many saw as already high.
The smile faded from Stella’s face.
She turned to look at Sean Knight.
Sean Knight ignored her, as well as the others who were bidding.
Number seventeen, Andrew Petrov, holding a wine bottle, shouted loudly:
"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars!"
This price immediately caused an uproar!
The average price had surpassed fifteen thousand dollars per hectare!
That was an exaggerated price!
Fifty percent above the market value!
Andrew relished the sensation, took a big gulp of wine, and then gestured with the bottle to those around him.
Seeing the momentary lull, the Auctioneer loudly said:
"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, VIP No.16 bids 250,000 dollars, is there anyone offering a higher price? Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the first time..."
"Two hundred and sixty thousand dollars." The Jewish man held up his card, calm and composed.
All eyes turned to Andrew, but he sat down, holding the wine bottle, and said nothing.
Number twelve, with his mobile phone, raised his hand:
"Two hundred and sixty-five thousand dollars." Clearly, even for him, this price was very high—his increments had dropped to five thousand dollars.
The Auctioneer was extremely excited—seeing the first piece of land fetch such a high price, he wondered if the subsequent bids would be even more frenzied:
"Two hundred and seventy thousand dollars." The Jewish man kept pace without delay.
"Two hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars." Number twelve spoke up again.
"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars." For the first time, the Jewish man took out a handkerchief to wipe his forehead.
Sean Knight could see that beads of sweat were starting to show.
Number twelve did not raise his card again.
"Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars, VIP No.9 bids 280,000 dollars!" The Auctioneer’s voice shook with excitement; it was beyond his expectations, but he wanted to see if there was a possibility for a higher bid:
"Are there any further bids? Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars for the first time, any more bids? Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars for the second time..."
Stella’s gaze fell on Sean Knight.
She had not seen Sean make a move in the previous contests, but her intuition was telling her that this man would definitely act!
"Two hundred and ninety thousand dollars." Sean Knight raised his hand.
To Stella’s surprise, she actually felt relieved and a slight smile appeared on her face.
"VIP No.16! It’s VIP No.16!" The Auctioneer’s voice broke, "VIP No.16 bids 290,000 dollars! Two hundred and ninety thousand dollars, two hundred and ninety thousand dollars for the first time, any more bids..."
"Two hundred ninety-five thousand!" The Jewish man turned his head to give Sean Knight a cold glance before raising his card again.
"Three hundred thousand dollars." Sean Knight did not hesitate.
"Three hundred and five thousand!" The Jewish man also started adding increments of five thousand.
Clearly, this price was beyond his expectations as well.
"Three hundred and ten thousand." Sean Knight’s counter-bid did not pause.
The Jewish man hesitated and did not continue.
"Three hundred and ten thousand dollars, VIP No.16 bids 310,000 dollars, three hundred and ten thousand dollars for the first time, three hundred and ten thousand dollars for the second time, three hundred and ten thousand dollars for the third time! Sold! Congratulations VIP No.16 on winning Land No.1!"
The auction for Land No.1 ended, and as the interval before the second lot began, the volume of chatter in the Auction House suddenly grew.
"With the first piece of land going at such a high price, one can only wonder how high the following ones will go!"
