Chapter 1084: 574
Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington exchanged glances but didn’t speak.
If he knew that the land Sean Knight and his colleagues were responsible for was measured in square kilometers, he would probably be even more envious and surprised!
Throughout the journey, Mary Powell, the translator, was very diligent, serving not just as a translator but also as a guide.
The girls from Brazil were also very enthusiastic. When passing through places for meals and accommodations, Sean Knight and the three others certainly attracted quite a lot of attention from the girls—after all, they were tall and well-built with a good presence, and they were foreigners.
Mary Powell couldn’t help but feel jealous, and on the car ride, he said,
"I just don’t get it. When you four come here together, all these girls only have eyes for you. I used to be quite popular when I came here before!"
However, he was also curious:
"Don’t you guys have any interest in those girls at all? Some of them could even compete in Miss Universe!
Could it be that you..."
"We’re afraid of getting sick," Lincoln Harrington replied curtly, shutting him up, "Besides, we all have families."
He glanced at Douglas Cooper and discovered that Cooper didn’t object.
Did this guy actually have something going on with that Japanese girl?
Sean Knight and Elijah Hastings in the car behind didn’t hear this conversation.
Otherwise, who knows how the boss would have dealt with that guy!
Two days later, the off-road vehicle pulled in at a small town.
"The place you are looking for is right here." After getting out of the car and recognizing the signs around the town, Mary Powell confirmed, "just don’t know where your land is. We need to coordinate with the local government officials for that."
He looked into the distance and said,
"The harbor isn’t far from here, and the food grown can be taken directly there for export. But honestly, there are many people here who really can’t get enough to eat... I don’t understand why."
Sean Knight and the others also got out of the car and looked around.
Now, the farmland around the town had largely been harvested, but the land hadn’t been tilled yet—or rather, no one had organized the tilling.
The town seemed quite large in scale, but the population wasn’t that large, at least from what could be seen on the streets when they stopped.
There weren’t many cars either.
Scanning the area, Sean Knight noticed that the tallest building in the town was a three-story structure on the edge, where there was also a lot of large agricultural machinery and a large courtyard.
He guessed it would be there.
"Let’s go, I’ll take you to the mayor of this town," Mary Powell said. "Bring your documents, they can confirm the location of your land."
In fact, there was no need to confirm, as the documents already showed that apart from a minimal amount of public land, the rest of the cultivated land in the town belonged to Sean Knight.
Not just this town, but also the five nearby towns, a total of six towns’ land, were all there in the documents.
Strictly speaking, whoever held the documents owned the land.
"Let’s not go there yet, let’s sit in the bar on the town for a bit and gather some information first," Sean Knight gestured, "We’re tired from driving, let’s have a couple of drinks first."
"You’re the boss, you decide," Mary Powell naturally didn’t refuse.
There were six or seven people in the bar. A big-bearded boss was wiping a wine glass behind the counter, a young female waiter was serving drinks and snacks to customers.
In the bar, only one young person was drinking, the rest were elderly.
The arrival of Sean Knight and his group drew some gazes.
But once the five of them sat down at a table by the window and ordered a few beers, the attention of the others slowly drifted away.
"Sidney Roberts, are you really planning to go to the city tomorrow to look for work?" the bar boss asked the young man drinking at the counter.
"I don’t want to, really. I only know how to farm and drive a tractor. But those Japanese who contracted the land have already started packing up. The soybeans they harvested from the fields have been taken to the harbor for export..."
"Isn’t that exactly what should happen? After harvesting the soybeans, and once the field is plowed, you can plant corn again..." muttered an alcoholic.
"But those Japanese don’t plan to till the land anymore. They say they don’t want it..."
"They don’t want it?" The bar boss behind the counter was stunned for a moment, then said,
"Does that mean we can go and farm the land?"
"Anyway, that’s what the Japanese said; they won’t farm it, but if someone wants to, they can."
"Why? Are they scared of being retaliated against here for dumping nuclear contaminated water into the sea?" one of the alcoholics joked.
"It shouldn’t be that." Sidney Roberts didn’t take it as a joke, trying earnestly to explain, though his thoughts were somewhat unclear because of the alcohol, "They seem to be in a hurry, maybe they are afraid of something..."
Sean Knight and Elijah Hastings exchanged a knowing look.
"They left? That’s really great! We can go and farm the land now!" one alcoholic suddenly said, "I haven’t farmed in a long time... I haven’t eaten corn I grew myself..."
"Dream on!" another person loudly scolded him, "Do you think those unscrupulous bosses would be that nice? Even if they go, it will certainly fall into someone else’s hands! That land... that land is never coming back to us..."
Sidney Roberts didn’t say anything more, but the female waiter seemed to have a soft spot for him, trying to encourage him:
"Just wait. Whether or not those Japanese farm the land, it won’t simply be left fallow. You might not find work if you go to the city, but if you wait here, maybe a lot of work will come looking for you."
