Chapter 1081: 573
The woman didn’t leave, but as she watched Aria busily working with plastic gloves on and clearly enjoying herself, she suddenly asked:
"Aunt, so this is your family’s Sean’s girlfriend? I heard she’s a princess? Even a princess does this kind of work? Why do I feel like she’s not even as posh as my second son’s wife?"
Aria, not understanding the local dialect this woman was speaking, thought she must be a villager since she greeted her mother-in-law. Assuming the woman was an acquaintance, Aria simply smiled without speaking and continued with her work.
In the past few days, Ruby had been feeling extremely satisfied with her daughter-in-law. She truly couldn’t be happier.
Hearing the neighbor speak like that, Ruby immediately became unhappy and retorted:
"What? Does being a princess mean she has to report to you? That daughter-in-law of yours, putting on a face as pale as a ghost every day, and you say my daughter-in-law is worse than yours? That’s like a pig snubbing fine bran!
What do you think a princess is like anyway? Do you expect her to dress like people from ancient times just like on TV?
Didn’t you go to school? Can’t you show some common sense? Get moving and take your ladder to where you’re needed!"
These past two days, Aria wasn’t running around with Sean; she was busy making sun-dried vegetables and tomato sauce with Ruby.
Although she was a complete novice, Ruby genuinely liked this earnest young girl—her hands, utterly unsuited for labor, were even blistered from cutting the beans!
But no matter how much she was advised against it, Aria wouldn’t listen and insisted on working alongside her mother-in-law.
How could she not like her?
She wasn’t causing any trouble either, and however they told her to do things, she would, though it was distressing to watch.
The woman, roughly the same age as Sean, was scolded by Ruby and, feeling a bit resentful, tried to explain:
"I was just saying! Where is little Sean?"
"Sister-in-law, what’s up?" Sean emerged from the vegetable garden, carrying a bucket of tomatoes:
"I heard your Little Hai was locked up in the detention center a few days ago? What happened? Stole somebody’s crabs?"
Upon hearing Sean’s words, the woman’s face immediately changed.
Behind the village was a large reservoir, part of the wetland park. In recent years, some bosses had come to lease it for crab farming. According to the bosses, since the reservoir was public property, they didn’t mind the villagers catching fish or such.
Since they used big cages for crab farming, some crabs had escaped over the years. Hence, crabs could be found all over in the reservoir.
The boss said that if the nearby villagers wanted to eat crabs, they could catch a few at night.
But they were not to sell them.
After all, crab farming had its costs.
Yet, some people weren’t interested in eating them but rather in selling them.
The boss sold crabs for sixty per kilogram retail and fifty wholesale. Yet, there were villagers who dared to catch crabs at night and sell them in the morning market for forty or even thirty per kilogram.
Would the boss be happy about that?
A few kilograms here and there they might overlook, but some were audacious enough to swim out to the crab cages at night, slice them open, and dump the contents into their pockets!
That was a significant loss for the boss!
The woman’s son, Little Hai, did just that, and when caught selling the crabs, the boss reported him, leading to his arrest.
He was detained for ten days.
And fined.
Normally, everyone was a fellow villager, and Sean wouldn’t be inclined to point out people’s faults to their face when hearing such gossip.
But he had just heard what the woman had said about Aria.
My woman, whether she’s a princess or not, what right do you have to comment?
If you’re not going to be polite, don’t blame me for being petty!
After his remark, the woman’s face turned beet red and she began to curse:
"It’s all that damn boss’s fault, taking a few kilograms of crabs is such a minor thing, is there really a need to call the police?..."
Grumbling, she walked away.
Once out of the Courtyard, she was still muttering to herself:
"Humph! What’s there to be so proud of? It’s just some Money earned! Who knows how that Money was made... Marrying a princess, her? Seems more like a peasant girl to me. Even a girl from the wilderness in Africa can be called a princess..."
No sooner had she exited the Entrance than she saw several cars coming from the end of the village, stopping right outside the Knight Family home.
Naturally curious and fond of lively scenes, she stood by the Road with her ladder, eager to see what was happening.
The best scenario would be if Sean’s younger brother was arrested; then there’d be quite a show!
Seeing license plates from both XIN A and XIN B, she knew there’d be gossip to talk about.
More than a dozen people got out of the cars and entered the Courtyard of the Knight family.
Sean was a bit puzzled until the visitors introduced themselves, and he understood.
They were from the Provincial Committee for Ethnic and Religious Affairs, the Prefecture as well, and even from the County.
A three-tiered collaboration.
The visitors discussed Princess Aliya’s situation in hints and implications.
As Sean entertained them Inside the Courtyard and conversed, he learned that in the Kingdom, someone had disclosed the situation to the ambassador from China stationed there. The ambassador then informed the local Committee for Ethnic and Religious Affairs.
Just earlier that year, Abdullah had come over with a group of Crown Princes from the Middle East to investigate the local Ice and Snow Tourism Resources. Now with another princess arriving, they were naturally eager to establish good relations./p>
Confronted with these officials, Aliya’s demeanor changed instantly, from the well-behaved daughter-in-law to the Princess of the Kingdom!
"I appreciate you all coming to see me, but let me clarify one thing: I have come here on a personal basis. This is my husband’s Home.
I hope you will not overly disturb my private life. I do not want your visit to impact the relationship with my husband’s family.
With regards to investment and construction matters concerning the Kingdom, I am not involved. You would do better to speak to my husband, my brother, who is the current Crown Prince Abdullah, who is very willing to listen to my husband’s advice."
