Chapter 1071: Chapter 570: The Crisis of the Dark Night and the Deserved Award!
Of course, Sean Knight was certain he hadn’t misheard.
He greeted the sentry and quickly walked towards the ancient city.
The watchtower commander thought Sean wanted to explore the ancient city at night and sent a sentry to follow him while he and the other sentries continued their patrol.
When Sean reached the city gate entrance, he still saw nothing amiss.
He simply jumped onto the Anubis statue to get a better look inside the city.
Then, he was in for a shock!
From within the city, swarms of Poisonous Snakes and poisonous insects emerged, crawling towards them!
These snakes and insects kept to their own sides of the road as if abiding by an unspoken rule, advancing in unison.
Occasionally, a snake would try to cross over to the beetle’s territory, only to be promptly called back by some kind of controller.
The snakes were now less than 100 meters away from the city gate!
Sean took a deep breath, then turned to look at the sentry and said in a serious tone,
"Quick, send a signal! Those Poisonous Snakes are attacking us!"
The sentry was stunned for a moment, but Sean had no time to say more to him. He reached into his pocket, pulled out two incendiary bombs, pulled the pins, and threw them towards the snakes and beetles!
"Boom—!"
The incendiary bombs exploded amidst the snakes and insects in the distance, instantly causing a surge of living things to catch fire!
That sentry immediately understood, turned around, and rushed towards the watchtower commander, shouting as he ran,
"Monitor! The boss says the Poisonous Snakes and poisonous insects are attacking! We need to sound the alarm! Sound the alarm!"
That shout from the sentry woke up many people.
Of course, Sean’s incendiary bombs also played a role.
Seeing the sentry had run off, Sean took out several more incendiary bombs and threw them again.
These snakes and insects naturally feared fire, and although there was a higher-order presence urging them towards the human campground, the power of the flames also slowed their advance.
However, only several hundred meters separated the campground from his position. By the time the watchtower commander fired his gun as a warning and the armed people from the campground arrived, Sean had been forced to come down from the statue and retreat to a spot about ten meters from the entrance.
Because those snakes and poisonous insects had already closed in!
Even if Sean had the strength of three warriors, he couldn’t possibly hold back the millions of snakes and insects, so retreat was the only option.
The Winged Snakes, particularly, were incredibly fast, nearly catching up to the speed of an adult running.
"Boss, retreat! The flame throwers are coming!"
Behind him, Elijah Hastings shouted.
Sean immediately felt relieved, threw the last two incendiary bombs ahead of the leading group of flying serpents, and quickly turned to run towards the crowd.
As the incendiary bombs whipped up sand and burst into flames, they enveloped the fastest-moving flying serpents within.
The flames rose, halting the momentum of these serpents. By the time they realized and started to scurry out from both sides, Sean had already retreated back into the ranks of his team.
Then, the team leader gave an order, and a dozen flame soldiers directed their flame throwers toward the incoming poisonous insects and snakes!
The air was filled with the crackle and pop of igniting flames, and a foul stench began to fill the air.
At that moment, several team members fired off flares into the crowd.
The hordes of Poisonous Snakes and insects were immediately visible to everyone!
One could see that the area roughly 200 meters from the city wall to the crowd was teeming with snakes and insects!
And even more of these creatures were pouring out of the city wall non-stop!
Clearly, there were far more poisonous insects and snakes than the scorpions from before!
Moreover, when dealing with those scorpions, everyone was well-prepared; both the attack and the subsequent supply organization were very well planned.
But this nocturnal assault of snakes and insects had put the team members on the defensive.
Although they had contingency plans, the smooth progress throughout the day had caused everyone to lose the alertness they should have had. If not for Sean’s intuition, the campground might already have suffered heavy casualties by now.
Seeing the flame soldiers stabilize their formation, Sean and those following up also began to toss incendiary bombs during the lulls in the attack to cover the flame soldiers’ blind spots.
Other team members positioned themselves behind the flame soldiers, ready to form a three-tiered barrage to prevent any gaps that could allow the flying serpents to break through.
Some team members, armed with military shovels or guns, were positioned next to the flame soldiers to deal with any that slipped through the net.
The whole defense seemed to be in good order.
But until now, Sean still did not feel completely at ease.
Could there be a problem somewhere else?
Sean looked around; everyone’s attention was focused on the poisonous snakes and insects ahead.
He took two incendiary bombs and walked to the side.
Lincoln Harrington and Douglas Cooper immediately followed.
Neither of them spoke. As bodyguards, their job was simply to protect the boss at this time.
When Sean reached one side of the campground, he looked from there towards the "battlefield" where the two sides faced off.
The flame soldiers and the incendiary bombs thrown by team members behind them seemed to cover the insects and snakes quite perfectly; there were no apparent holes in the defense.
He continued walking to the side where the sand dunes rose and fell unpredictably.
After walking several tens of meters, Sean suddenly heard a rustling sound behind the dunes!
He immediately activated Sky Eye and looked through the dunes to see, astonishingly, that groups of poisonous insects were crawling this way quickly from the other side of the dunes!
