Chapter 1036: 558

The Oil Field Manager struggled to rise, hearing the distant sound of the car fading away and feeling the sting of the sand hitting his face, he immediately understood his current situation.

After a great deal of struggle, he finally untied the rope that bound his hands and then pulled off the cloth covering his face.

Nearby, four or five people lay on the ground, all appearing to be from the oil fields.

These people were also struggling to untie their ropes.

Not far away, several water bottles and packages of compressed dried food were strewn about. Seeing this, the manager quickly crawled over, snatched two water bottles and clutched them beneath him, then desperately untied the ropes around his feet, not even glancing at the other people as he picked up the water bottles and dried food and ran towards the direction of the distant car.

The sand dust soon covered his tracks.

The manager heard the distant sound of people behind him fighting and cursing over the water supply.

However, all that was no longer his concern.

All he wanted was to get out of the desert as quickly as possible and return to his home.

He never wanted to be involved in these messy affairs again!

The manager also vaguely understood why he was the first to free himself—surely, the security guard captain was the strongest!

It must have been related to the confessions they gave when they were first bound up.

Being a technical supervisor, he never took part in those shady activities, only responsible for oil extraction, so that must be why he ended up like this, right?

The shouting behind him had ceased, the road ahead was long, and the winds were strong, but the manager knew that with this water and food, as long as he found the right direction, he could make it out.

After driving a few kilometers, the off-road vehicle changed direction.

The tire tracks were quickly buried by the windblown sand.

"Mr. Patrick, are you sure we’re on the right road?" Douglas Cooper asked in the car.

"According to the satellite navigation, there should be no problem," Lincoln Harrington replied while driving: "We’re about twenty or so kilometers from the Desert Gold Mine.

That place is far from the coast and has only one road leading to it. The documents indicate that they ship gold out every three to six months, so there should be a significant stockpile."

"Let’s hope there’s a decent amount," Douglas speculated, "otherwise, it wouldn’t be worth it for us to travel all this way."

The sandstorm not only covered the car tracks but also made the engine noise almost indistinguishable amidst the roaring sands.

When they finally reached the valley where the gold mine was located, they noticed that aside from a small building with lights on, everything else was pitch black.

The valley floor was not large, roughly the size of half a football field. There was a small building, some machinery, three cars, and a row of single-story houses.

Looking at the topography and conditions surrounding the valley, it was a soil terrain; at the bottom of the valley were two mine caves with rails running into them.

No rivers were seen nearby, which made Sean Knight wonder what method these people used for gold digging.

Could there be a subterranean river in the mine pit?

"Boss, there are guards, but they’re currently inside the building," Elijah Hastings reported after observing through the night vision device for a while, "Not many people inside, maybe we should..."

"We’re not familiar with the people here. Let’s prioritize taking the gold and avoiding harm," Sean Knight drew his pistol, chambered a round, and said,

"Of course, if we encounter any hardliners, don’t be polite. I’ll go to the single-story houses; you guys head to the small building."

"Okay! Watch your safety, boss, and don’t be impulsive," Elijah reminded him, then he and Lincoln along with the others stealthily moved toward the small building.

The heavy sandstorm concealed the noise of their movement.

Sean Knight quietly approached the single-story houses, activated Sky Eye, and saw what was inside.

Of the four rooms, three housed workers—each room had eight to ten people, all in communal sleeping arrangements—and they were all black.

The fourth room contained tools, nothing of value, so Sean Knight turned and left the area, heading towards the small building.

The fight in the small building had just begun.

Elijah and the others had knocked out the doorman upon entering and then started searching floor by floor.

The small building had three floors. They had searched the first without raising any alarms, but when they reached the second floor, they encountered someone coming out to use the restroom and were discovered.

The opponent had a gun!

At that moment, Sean Knight had just entered the small building and, seeing what was happening through Sky Eye, immediately stepped back out, then climbed to the second floor through an outer wall window.

Amidst the sound of gunfire, he broke through a room window and slipped inside, then quietly walked to the entrance.

This was a laboratory, and it was empty.

He untwisted the door lock, slowly extending his gun out.

The people outside were exchanging shots with Elijah’s team, completely unaware that Sean Knight had appeared behind them.

"Bang, bang, bang!"

With three gunshots, three individuals taking cover by the doorway were taken down from behind!

Clearing the obstacle, Elijah and his team rushed to the second floor, where gunfire erupted once more from the third floor.

Elijah and his team held position at the stair entrance, exchanging fire, while Douglas had already darted out, planning to flank their opponents.

Encirclement tactics were never about numbers.

So, Sean Knight wasn’t worried about their safety at all, leisurely admiring the gold ingots stored in one of the rooms on the second floor, where an anti-theft door was installed.

Looking at the sturdy and cumbersome door lock, Sean Knight turned around and squatted by the three individuals he’d shot, searching them for keys, and opened the heavily locked door.

There were a total of five people upstairs, each armed with a gun, though they didn’t have much ammunition.

While Elijah and Lincoln exchanged gunfire at the stair entrance, Douglas was already maneuvering to cut off the enemy’s escape route.

Surrounded, Sean Knight was not concerned about their safety and took his time enjoying the gold ingots stored in the room.
