Unfortunately, once he exposes his trump card, he will lose the Dominion squad. It was such a pity to only use them for one mission before taking them out, but he had no choice. Those people were too principled as soldiers.

He didn’t need people who could think for themselves and make decisions based on their judgment. He needed a team that would obey him unconditionally and the second squad was that team.

As the commander was deep in thought, the door was knocked and the voice of a soldier in charge of patrol came through.

"Commander, the president is requesting your presence."

"Did the president visit the base?" Commander Qiu got up from his seat in a hurry.

It was not that he feared the president, after all, things were different now and even though the president still had some power, it was not a monopoly like before. However, he still couldn’t drop his mask.

Until he found the catalyst core and could guarantee rough power, he still had to act subservient to the president and others in power.

"Yes, Mr. President is waiting in conference room two." The soldier outside said.

"Alright, I’ll be there in a moment." Commander Qiu replied then the soldier turned and left to go and deliver the message.

After composing himself, Commander Qiu then left his office and headed to the conference room. A lieutenant who had received the president was entertaining him as they waited for the commander.

"Lieutenant, how many soldiers have awakened superpowers in this base?" The president asked the man standing a few seats away from him.

"The number is not completely accurate since some of the soldiers are on missions and have not reported back yet. But the known number for the time being is two hundred and sixteen." The lieutenant replied immediately with a respectful attitude.

"There are soldiers who haven’t come back yet? Are they okay?" The president became concerned when he heard that some soldiers were still on missions.

The apocalypse had come too abruptly without giving the government the chance to prepare. They had suffered heavy losses and he hoped that they would not lose even more talented individuals.

"We didn’t have an opportunity to communicate before the satellites and the network went down. So, we are not sure about their situation, but some have been arriving at the base recently.

So, we are hoping that more will come back safely." The lieutenant continued.

"That’s good to know. If they can come back, that’s all that mattered."

The lieutenant was happy to know that even in the apocalypse, the president still cared so much about the men in service. It motivated people like him to keep working hard even if there was no longer pay or anything to gain from it.

As they were engaging in small talk, Commander Qiu walked in and went straight to stand in front of the president. He performed a standard military salute before the president nodded for him to sit down.

"How is everything going at the base? Has there been any progress in eliminating the zombies?" The president asked with concern.

He was worried that zombies will completely overrun the world and humans will have nowhere to go.

"We are trying our best but the zombies are only increasing every day. Moreover, they seem to be getting stronger. Even though we are doing everything we can, I do not think we will make a dent in the population of zombies.

I think we should focus our efforts on other areas. We can use the resources we are using to kill zombies in making the soldiers stronger instead so that they can protect the weak." Commander Qiu suggested as soon as he saw an opening.

"Oh, what do you suggest?" The president asked for the Commander’s opinion.

"I think we can direct those resources in conducting an experiment that can help us understand how superpowers work and if we can find a way to awaken more people. This way we don’t have to worry about not being able to eliminate the zombies." Commander Qiu said as if in good faith.

In fact, he had his own ulterior motives. He had been wondering how to brooch the subject of research and he required resources.

Even though he had some power, without the catalyst core and obtaining absolute strength he still needed others to cooperate with him. If he got permission from the president to conduct experiments, then he didn’t have to worry about carrying the blame if anything went wrong.

Moreover, he could use those resources to build his own super army. Thinking of this, he wanted to give a long speech to convince the president but he didn’t expect him to agree right away.

"Okay, you can allocate a part of the resources for research. I hope there will be results soon so that we can help humanity." The president said with a look of a compassionate leader.

"Thank you Mr. President. I will not let down your expectations." Commander Qiu stood up to salute immediately as if worried that the president would go back on his words.

It was ironic how the two people seemed to be on the same page but at the same time, something felt off.

The lieutenant who had been standing to the side the whole time had a bad premonition but couldn’t understand why. So, he just pushed it to the back of his mind.

"I received information that you have activated the Dominion squad, what is happening?" The president asked the question that had brought him all the way there.

He wanted to know what could be so important that the commander would send out an elite team valued by the government.

When Commander Qiu heard that question, he almost wanted to say ’I knew it.’ How could the president have made the dangerous journey to the base just to ask about the soldiers who hadn’t returned or to exchange small talk.

It seemed that his actions had attracted unwanted attention. He had to ask the Dominion squad to be more discreet when they acted. It might prolong the mission, but he didn’t want others to find out about the catalyst core.
