Chapter 95: Chapter 3 Ghoul

For the Night Watch organization, foreign mercenaries were utterly detested.

One reason was that they were ubiquitous.

As soon as they caught a whiff of an Undead Spirit mutation, these mercenaries would swarm in.

No matter how the Night Watch tried to establish blockades or resort to violent expulsion, they always found a way to infiltrate.

Yet, as a global supernatural organization, the Night Watch placed extreme importance on their external reputation, unable to commit the vile act of outright killing these mercenaries.

Another reason was the complete lack of discipline.

Even if they moved with the Night Watch, the commands of the Night Watch Knights fell on deaf ears.

When the fight was in their favor, they recklessly charged forward; at the first sign of defeat, they fled faster than anyone else.

Sometimes they would even draw monsters towards the Night Watch lines, or steal equipment from the Night Watch, giving the Knights a tremendous headache.

The third reason was their lack of strength.

This was the original sin. If these mercenaries had been competent fighters, the previous shortcomings wouldn’t have mattered.

The Knights had their tacit way of dealing with these foreign mercenaries: let them follow behind and keep them in sight to prevent them from running around attracting monsters.

Simultaneously, they were prohibited from entering the Knights’ combat lines to avoid any disruption to their own fighting.

For the mercenaries, not being able to roam freely was somewhat uncomfortable, but following behind the Night Watch allowed them to scavenge some spoils left over from the battles, which was somewhat profitable.

Of course, this setup was like lions hunting at the front and hyenas following behind, picking at the carrion, hence it’s no wonder that the Knights viewed the mercenaries with nothing but contempt and disdain.

Soon, the Night Watch Knights sprang into action according to their orders. Holy Sun, Silver Moon, and Morning Star, each division of Knights, went to their designated combat zones to purge the Undead Creatures.

As the weakest division, Morning Star was assigned to the coastal section of the route to Palamos, where Corpse Ghosts and Water Ghosts lurked; they were relatively easy to handle.

Despite their sharp claws and corpse toxin, the Knights’ bodies were fully covered in Power Armor, naturally unthreatened by such hazards.

A few hours later, Knight Captain Hasimodo, leading six Night Watch Knights from Morning Star Team 3, advanced cautiously along the coastal path with guns in hand.

Due to a significant reduction in manpower, the team optimized their equipment weight. Heavy Gatling guns and RPG rocket launchers could not be carried, so the team settled on a loadout of 4 laser rifles, 2 shotguns, and 1 Flame Sprayer, considering the overall frequency of attack, lethality, and sustainability of the group.

Approaching the danger zone marked on the map, Knight Captain Hasimodo quickly gave the order:

"Lorent, Roger, Karis, take the high ground at 1 o’clock. Langri, hold the 12 o’clock pass with heavy weapons, between the two high grounds. Everyone else, follow me in a V-formation towards the high ground at 11 o’clock."

Thus, the Knights acted swiftly on command. Suddenly, someone spoke up:

"Hasimodo, what about those mercenaries behind us? Are we going to direct them too?"

"Don’t worry about them." Hasimodo paused, "Jialwen, you bring up the rear, keep an eye on them. If any of them try to mess up our formation, give a warning shot at first, shoot to kill if they do it a second time."

"Ok," said Night Watch Knight Jialwen.

Meanwhile, from behind in The Azure Longsword Mercenary Corps, Aske also started deploying tactics:

"Peggy, Mia, take the hill at 2 o’clock. There’s a large tree up there, Mia, you climb to the top and then release Miel to assist."

"Eleanor, Sigrdrifa, skirt around the Night Watch Knights and wait under the hill at 2 o’clock."

"Medea, Thira, take the 1 o’clock direction, maintain distance from the Night Watch Knights ahead. Once they take the high ground over there, you circle clockwise around the base of the high ground to the front."

"Nora, follow me, and the rest of you stay in contact by radio. Understood?"

"Understood!" The girls responded loudly and clearly.

At the command, The Azure Longsword Mercenary Group swiftly split into four and headed towards their respective targets.

Peggy and Mia were the fastest to reach the hill at 2 o’clock.

Though the hill was slightly lower than the high ground up ahead, the presence of a large tree at its peak made it the highest point in the area.

Peggy stopped under the tree, while Mia, within the Shadow Realm, jumped between shattered shadows of leaves, quickly arriving at the treetop.

After signaling, Miel immediately teleported from Fire Island, gracefully grabbing the branches nearby.

"Come here, Miel," Mia called her, "This branch is the sturdiest, it can carry both our weights."

As such, Miel leaped over—being part Wood Elf, her agility in the treetops was akin to that of a monkey.

Next to Mia, she tested the branch under her feet.

It was sturdy enough.

"Treetop team in position!" came from the radio, as the two girls spoke in unison.

"Hill team in position as well." A few minutes later, Eleanor and Sigrdrifa reached the bottom of the hill, greeting Peggy above.

"We’re actually the slowest," Medea shrugged as they advanced.

Without a word, Thira extended her right hand from her sleeve, and the Secret Silver Circuits on her skin suddenly lit up.
