Chapter 347: Chapter 145: Ambush from All Sides
"So, which character is she supposed to be playing?" Medea asked while applying makeup to Eleanor in Fire Island.
"A certain female ancestor from the Weisbach family," Nora answered. "Well, it’s said this ancestor was also a Princess of the Bavarian Duchy, and likewise, the fourth child of her family, the youngest daughter. She was her father’s darling, carefree, and would often slip out during lessons to ride horses in the countryside."
"Why does this feel so familiar..." Eleanor wondered, listening to the description. It sounds a lot like me. So, do I just get to play myself?
"However, her ending wasn’t very good," Nora continued as she tied up Eleanor’s hair. "She later married a young Duke of the Carinthia Duchy, and this Duke had a very domineering mother."
"Troublesome mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship," Medea pointed out.
"Right, so her latter half of life was quite miserable," Nora said. "Mad Ludwig was actually this Princess Elizabeth’s cousin once removed, and it’s said he greatly admired his elder cousin. Even after she married, he would often invite her to social gatherings on Rose Island in Starnberg Lake."
"Cousin once removed and elder cousin, isn’t that close kin?" Medea grunted. "Tsk tsk, quite thrilling."
"It’s not the kind of relationship you’re thinking of," Nora clarified. "The two were simply kindred spirits, both very straightforward people accustomed to expressing their likes and dislikes explicitly, even at the risk of offending the other party. So, their relationships with others in their social circle weren’t that great, but with each other, they were particularly close-knit."
"I see, so they were the so-called straight shooters, low on emotional intelligence, with sharp edges, not versed in tactfulness," Medea said.
"Why do I feel like you are taking this opportunity to make fun of me?" Eleanor asked suspiciously.
"Not at all, Ellie, these are all from the book. Have you seen that book? ’Swan Family: Genius or Mad?’" Nora said as she finished tying Eleanor’s hair. "It talks about your family being filled with misunderstood eccentrics with blunt personalities, many of whom have shone in the history of art, leaving behind their vivid marks."
Eleanor: ......
So it’s not me being mocked, but my family! Is low emotional intelligence a genetic trait in our family?
"Alright," Medea finished applying the makeup. Eleanor stood up and looked at herself in the mirror.
A low-cut, luxurious gown, revealing pale, delicate shoulders. Her brilliant golden hair was styled into the elegant updo of a married noble lady, adorned with a sparkling crystal accessory; she exuded a strong, mature charm—so beautiful that she hardly recognized herself.
"I say, where did you get all these clothes..." Eleanor said weakly, feeling slightly uncomfortable with the feminized version of herself in the mirror.
"The dress is what I’m saving for my wedding..." Medea said.
"The headdress was a birthday gift from my family when I turned 18..." Nora added.
The two looked at Eleanor as they spoke, but gradually ran out of words.
Could it be? Is this really her? Who would have thought that a well-dressed Eleanor could be such a stunner?
"Will Aske lose his composure when he sees her?" Nora started a hidden Mind Communication. "Maybe we should have him step aside."
"How would he step aside?" Medea countered. "It would be strange to get all dressed up and not let him see, wouldn’t it? We could apply the Mind Blind Zone Ability, so his gaze can’t linger on Eleanor."
"Alright," Nora hesitated but ultimately couldn’t leave the Squad Leader unattended and reluctantly agreed.
The two escorted the dressed-up Ellie back to the Main Plane, instantly causing a collective crowd of girls to gather around.
"Wow, is that a wedding dress?"
"The material is so beautiful!"
"Really, Ellie looks totally different now!"
Aske, held back by everyone, tried to push forward to see, but for some reason, he was very resistant to doing so.
"What are you two up to now?" he sighed, turning to look at Nora and Medea.
"You can rest assured," Medea said. "We’ve definitely dressed her up carefully; there won’t be any flaws."
"Why can’t I see her then?"
"No reason."
Aske: ......
Fine, if the acting falls through, just go for a strong kill.
For some reason, he suddenly recalled a conversation he had after a match with the opposing team’s squad leader:
"...It’s not that I don’t want to recruit female players; it’s just that there are a lot of issues. Like on the final day of the championship, what if it’s their uncomfortable days and they have stomach pains? Painkillers might help for a while, but it’s not possible to be completely fine. Can they perform at 100% during the match?"
"If they play poorly and get scolded, they start crying. You can’t keep scolding them, how would the other players feel? It creates a bad influence. Occasionally they make a few mistakes, act cute, and everyone lets it slide, but what if the same mistakes are made in a real match?"
"The gaming technology has become holographic now, reducing the need for quick reflexes and lowering the demands on operation. Yet eSports is still a profession dominated by the young, and being young means being unstable. The bosses do like female players; even if they’re not good at the game, they’re popular for ads and endorsements. But the more beautiful they are, typically the worse the temperament, and it’s important to have someone in the team who can keep things under control..."
Back then, the squad leader had unloaded a bellyful of woes to him, and he hadn’t quite understood. Now, he truly understood and could say he had firsthand experience.
Fine, if I can’t see her, I can’t see her. If there is really a problem, just go for a strong kill.
"Next time we can’t do this," he insisted at last.
"Got it," the two girls responded obediently. Coupled with their attractiveness, it was hard to remain upset with them.
The group found several paddles in a pile of reeds by the lake that seemed to have been abandoned. After checking that the boats were in good condition and assessing the waterline, they rowed towards the small island across the water.
Upon arriving at the island, this small island once brimming with roses had quickly become desolate following the death of Mad Ludwig. Now, it was overgrown with various wild grasses.
In the center of the island was a collapsed cottage. It was evident that the decor had once been exquisite, but due to the lack of maintenance, it couldn’t escape the ravages of time.
"Miel, go to the highest point of the island, the small hill over there."
"Sigrdrifa, go behind the house ruins and stay hidden."
"Nora, Medea, Mia, you stand in the brush on this side, enter the Shadow Realm for camouflage, and wait for my instructions."
"Thira, you go to the right side of the island, the path we came from, and hide behind that large rock."
"Peggy, you hide behind the elevation on the left, where there is a recessed gap."
"Finally, Eleanor, you stand in front of the house. Yes, that’s right, in the middle of the two patches of weeds. You don’t need to do anything; just stare at the ground and daydream. When the target approaches, start reciting your lines."
At last, Aske looked up, estimating the time left until dusk:
"About 20 minutes," he said, then silently found a large tree and climbed up, "Everyone, be patient."
"Once the target appears, everyone pay attention not to talk on the Mind Communication Channel unless I give the attack order."
"Eleanor, have you memorized your lines?"
"I have," Eleanor nodded seriously.
Aske had prepared several scripts for her, each corresponding to different topics that Princess might bring up.
However, no matter how many plans there were, they couldn’t cover all the possibilities in reality. What mattered most was whether she could accurately immerse herself in the identity of that ancestor and fully utilize the acting talent unique to women.
