Chapter 85: Getting Devin a Little Gift, Incident
Chapter 85: Chapter 85: Getting Devin a Little Gift, Incident
The sun was still high, casting sharp shadows across the parking lot of the massive Westmont Plaza.
Tyler had parked the Audi cleanly in a spot near the main entrance.
Devin jumped out of the car with a spring in his step, eyes lighting up as he stared at the size of the mall.
"Man... Finally came here again," he said, spinning around to take in the layout.
The first time he came here was after they moved into their new place and Tyler did a total wardrobe overhaul.
He remembered that day and how much his brother had spent. He remembered how his mom was so worried that he was being wasteful.
Tyler smirked and nodded for him to lead the way.
"Let’s get you your Yeezys before someone spots the car and tries to sell your parking space on Craigslist."
Devin chuckled and walked towards the mall’s entrance.
They walked through the sliding glass doors and into the bright, air-conditioned mall.
The place was alive with families, kids, young couples, and weekend wanderers. For a Friday afternoon, it was busy. But Tyler didn’t mind.
He felt that it was nice to finally be around a crowd as he had spent the past seven to eight months holed up in his study, room, or the fab. And besides, he was here for something simple. Something normal.
They headed straight to the high-end sneaker and streetwear section tucked near the back, where the branded boutiques kept their shelves sparkling and displays fresh.
Tyler had given Devin a simple question in the car earlier: "What do you want? You pick."
And Devin had paused, really thought about it.
He could’ve asked for anything. A PS3, a new gaming rig, a trip somewhere. Tyler had expected something a bit over the top.
But Devin’s answer?
"I want a pair of Yeezys. And maybe a few clothes..."
That choice made Tyler’s respect for his little brother grow even more.
Devin knew they had a console at home. He also knew he could’ve pushed for more, to have Tyler get him one that he can use in his room. But he didn’t. He chose something nice, something he wanted, but still reasonable. That said a lot.
Inside the boutique, rows of sneakers lined the wall under soft white lights.
A couple of kids in the store paused mid-conversation when they saw the two of them walk in—especially Tyler, whose all-black outfit and calm, confident air didn’t match his age.
Devin walked up to the Yeezy display and scanned through the available options.
A few minutes later, he’d picked a sleek pair of Yeezy Boost 350s, some joggers, and a hoodie.
"You good?" Tyler asked.
Devin nodded. "Yeah. That’s everything."
They walked to the counter, where a young woman in a company shirt began scanning the items. She was professional—at first.
But her coworker just a few feet behind the register wasn’t even trying to hide her curiosity.
Her eyes moved from Tyler’s face to his watch, then to Devin, then back again. Something about them didn’t make sense to her.
Kids their age in designer clothes was anything new. But the issue was that they were about to drop a small fortune on shoes and streetwear like it was gum from the corner store.
She also remembered Tyler from five months ago when he came to their store and splurged tens of thousands of dollars on his brother.
And he was here again to spend more.
"Total comes to $3,462," the desk attendant said.
Without flinching, Tyler opened the GlassChannel app and told Freya to make the payment.
{Done, Master.}
The attendant checked her terminal and saw that the payment had cleared instantly.
Tyler nodded once and turned to leave, with Devin beside him with his bags in hand. And the silence behind them was thick with disbelief.
When the door closed behind the brothers, both attendants turned to each other, wide-eyed.
"Did we just... let a millionaire walk out?" the second girl whispered.
The cashier stared at the receipt still on the screen.
"Yeah. What a loss."
Back outside, the parking lot had thinned a bit. Tyler took the lead, keys in hand.
Devin dropped the bags carefully in the back seat and then hopped into the front passenger seat. He looked like Christmas came early.
"Thanks, bro. Thank you very much."
"Anytime." Tyler smiled.
He turned to get into the driver’s side, when he felt a sudden pressure against his lower back.
Then it was followed by a gruff voice: "Don’t move, kid. Hands where I can see ’em."
Tyler froze. It didn’t take genius-level intellect to understand what was happening. He was being robbed at gunpoint, and in broad daylight.
And by the feel of it, it a real weapon. Likely a 9mm. And the man wasn’t holding it steady, either. Probably, he was nervous.
Tyler just hopes that the bastard still had the safety on.
He looked at Devin who hadn’t yet noticed and was still all smiles, giddy from the things he just bought him.
Tyler sighed in relief and decided to handle the current situation as best as he could. He never experienced something like this in his past life, so this was a first for him.
But he felt that with how much his strength has grown, he would probably be able to handle the man.
And if he can’t, he would make sure nothing happens to Devin. No matter what it takes.
"Easy," Tyler said, slowly raising his hands. "You really sure you wanna do this?"
"Shut up," the man hissed. "Just give me the keys. That car’s mine now."
"Big mistake," Tyler said softly.
"I said shut up!" the man barked, jabbing the muzzle of the gun into his back.
Tyler tilted his head just enough to see the reflection of the man behind him in the window.
Mid-thirties, with hood pulled low. And shaking hands which means he wasn’t a pro. And definitely not ready for what was coming.
It was then that Devin noticed something was wrong, as Tyler was taking too long to get into car after standing there for so long.
"Big Bro?"
Tyler’s tone hardened immediately.
"Stay in the car, Devin. Lock the doors."
Devin’s eyes went wide. "What’s—"
"Now."
Devin immediately locked the car with a trembling hand.
The man behind Tyler growled. "Don’t try anything. I swear I’ll—"
Tyler spun and everything happened in less than a second.
He caught the man’s wrist with one hand, twisting it sharply to the side. The gun dropped and he caught it mid-fall and shoved the man backward.
The would-be robber stumbled, crashing into the front of a nearby parked sedan.
Before the man could react, Tyler had the gun pointed straight at him.
"Freeze," Tyler said calmly.
The man raised his hands, eyes wide.
Tyler heard footsteps and he turned to see one of the mall’s security officer running over, already yelling into his radio.
A few bystanders had noticed what was happening and backed off fast.
Tyler didn’t need this escalating. So, handed the weapon to the guard as soon as he arrived, then calmly explained the situation.
Devin had stepped out of the car by now, eyes still wide in disbelief but safe.
The guard shook his head, looking from the weapon to Tyler.
"How old are you, kid? You in military or something? How were you able to handle the situation better than most adults would? Anyways, good job. I’m glad you’re alright."
"Thank you," Tyler gave a thin smile.
Police showed up a few minutes later and the man was arrested. He had a record already, including petty theft and assault.
Tyler gave a brief statement, kept things simple, and refused to press charges.
He wasn’t being soft. He could see that the man’s fate was already sealed. He tried to rob a minor at gunpoint. That was the end of him.
And yes, Tyler would keep track of the case through Freya.
The police was surprised by Tyler’s age and how he handled the situation, and they commended him.
But all these didn’t matter to Tyler, as all he just wanted to do at the moment was go home.
...
Back in the car, Devin sat quietly for the first few minutes as Tyler pulled away from the plaza.
"Bro," he said finally, "what the hell was that?"
"A mistake," Tyler replied.
"You were so calm... I would’ve panicked."
"It’s fine. Everything has been taken care of."
Devin looked down, then back up.
"Did that happen to you before?"
Tyler didn’t answer right away.
"No," he said eventually.
The silence between them stretched.
Then Devin whispered, "I’m glad you were here."
Tyler reached over and ruffled his hair. "You’ll always be safe. As long as I’m around. Even when I’m not around. That’s a promise."
...
That evening, when they got home, Helena was furious at first. She was livid with anger about the danger than anything else.
It was only when she heard Tyler had deescalated things without violence, did her anger subside a little.
Later that night, Devin came into Tyler’s room.
"I’ve decided what I want to do when I grow up."
"Yeah?" Tyler smiled, enjoying the comfort of his bed.
"I want to be someone like you. Not just the rich part... but the protect-people part."
Tyler stared at his little brother for a moment, then smiled.
"You’ve already started."
