Chapter 84: Chapter 84: Family Time
Tyler rose early the next morning.
The sun hadn’t fully claimed the sky yet, but soft golden light was already spilling across the neighborhood roofs.
Standing in the middle of the house’s personal gym, he rolled his shoulders, stretched his arms, and breathed in deeply.
He hadn’t gotten the chance to work out during the time he was in Gumua, so he decided to use the time he was back home to keep himself in shape.
Today, he decided to go with the same routine as the daily system mission he was receiving then.
He dropped to the floor and began his first set of pushups.
...
After an hour of sweat and silence, Tyler stepped into the bathroom and cleaned up. His muscles ached, but in a good way. It was the kind that reminded you that you were alive.
Downstairs, the smell of toast and tea greeted him.
Helena was already at the dining table, reading through an old recipe notebook with a calm expression.
She looked up when he entered, her eyes lighting up.
"You’re up early," she said with a warm smile.
"Yeah, mom," Tyler smiled back.
Helena chuckled and pointed at the seat across from her.
"Sit. I made breakfast."
He joined her at the table, pouring himself a cup of tea and digging into the spread of toast, boiled eggs, and sliced fruit.
The house was quiet with just the two of them, as Devin had already left for school.
Tyler looked at his mom, with smile. She was seated at the table and watching him with a warm smile.
He smiled happily when he saw his mom smiling at him. He was very happy that he came back home to see them as he had missed them so much. And it was the same for them too.
As he ate, he could look help but think of his mother’s illness, and he looks at her intently.
Helena noticed and she set down her knife and looked up.
"Is there a problem, honey?"
Tyler hesitated but then decided to use the opportunity to ask his mom about her health.
"Have you been feeling okay lately?"
Helena raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"What do you mean?"
"Like... any dizziness? Headaches? Nausea?"
Her eyes widened slightly, caught off guard by how specific the question were. She knew that the reason why Tyler was asking these questions was because he was worried about her
She felt warm inside and she gave a soft laugh.
"Is that why you’re staring at me like I’m about to fall over?" she asked.
He didn’t respond, just looked at her with concern.
Helena reached out and squeezed his hand.
"Tyler, honey. I’m fine. I promise. You don’t need to worry about me."
He offered a smile but didn’t feel reassured. He has no idea if his mother was just telling him that to put him at ease or she was actually telling him the truth.
"Just... don’t skip your workouts, alright?" he said. "And don’t overdo anything. No heavy lifting or staying up late for no reason."
Helena chuckled again.
"You’re the one who’s supposed to be getting lectures, not me."
Then she stood and hugged him tightly from behind.
"But thank you. It means more than you know."
Tyler nodded, returning the hug.
"I’ve missed this."
"So have I."
...
They spent the rest of the morning talking casually. Tyler sat with her in the living room as she folded laundry, watching an old drama on TV.
He answered a few of her questions about his trip, carefully dodging the deeper details. She didn’t pry. She never had.
Instead, she filled the space with laughter and stories about the neighbors, about Devin’s growing appetite, and the garden she’d been trying to start again at the back.
When noon approached, Tyler stood and stretched.
"I’m going to pick up Devin."
Helena paused. "You sure?"
"I’ve got my learner’s permit now, mom. I’ll be careful."
She hesitated, clearly tempted to object, but finally nodded.
"Okay. Just drive slowly."
"Don’t worry, mom, I’ll crawl there if it’ll make you feel better." Tyler grinned.
She rolled her eyes, and he grabbed the car keys.
He stepped outside and unlocked the Audi R8. The sleek body of the car reflected the midday sun, as he pulled out of the driveway.
...
The drive to Devin’s school was smooth. He kept to the speed limits and followed traffic signs like a textbook student. But the car itself was too flashy to ignore.
As soon as he pulled into the school lot, heads turned. Students walking past stopped mid-sentence. Some of the teachers at the faculty windows stared.
Immediately phones came out and whispers spread fast.
Most of the students were shocked when they saw a kid who didn’t look any older than them was driving such a car.
It was a car that cost more than $110,000 and even close to $150,0000. For them and due to the fact it it was still 2010, the car was crazy expensive to them as young kids.
Even for those who come form rich families, it was something they would never get their hands on.
It was also the same for the teachers who are adults. Everyone all couldn’t help but wonder who the rich kid was.
Tyler stepped out calmly, dressed in a black jacket over matching black overalls, leaning casually against the car.
He didn’t care for the attention even as they were starting to create little crowds. Let them look. It didn’t matter as he was here for his younger brother.
He didn’t have to wait long though, as a wave of students emerged from the front entrance, and among them, he spotted Devin—laughing with a group of friends, his backpack bouncing against his side.
Tyler didn’t call out right away as je just watched, observing his interaction with his friends and other random people.
He wanted to see how Devin was interacting with those around him and make sure he wasn’t being bullied. This was one of the reasons why Tyler came to pick Devin up.
Tyler knew what it felt like to be bullied. He knew how easy it was for someone to suffer silently, without anyone ever noticing. And he would never allow Devin to experience the same thing as him.
If anyone touches him, he will definitely break their hands and legs to make an example out of them, and show everyone that no one messes with his family.
As for the blowback, he can handle it easily.
With a smile on his face, he watched as Devin joked with the others, bumping fists and grinning. There were no signs of discomfort, no isolating behavior. No one was avoiding him or treating him like a target. It was a relief.
Only when Devin was a few steps from the crowd did Tyler call out.
...
Devin and his friends was making their way through the little crowds in front of them.
They were quite surprised as to why there were crowds but Devin didn’t care. All he just wanted to do was to go home and spend time with his brother.
Since it was weekend, he can stay up all night and he plans to have them go out tomorrow. While he was still thinking, he heard his brother’s familiar voice and he was shocked.
"Yo, Devin!"
Devin froze, then looked around. His eyes locked onto Tyler’s figure leaning against the Audi.
His jaw dropped.
"BIG BRO?!"
The kid didn’t waste a second. He shouted a hasty goodbye to his friends and ran up to him.
"You’re here?! You came to pick me up?! In that?"
Tyler laughed and ruffled his hair. "Hop in. We’re not going straight home."
Devin didn’t need to be told twice.
They got into the car and pulled out of the school lot, leaving behind a field of confused teachers and stunned students.
Devin glanced over. "Where are we going?"
Tyler smirked. "You’ll see. Figured it’s been a while since I got you something nice."
Devin leaned back, his smile wide. "Man... I’m so glad you’re back."
Tyler didn’t say anything. He just drove. But in his heart, he felt the same way.
It was really good to be back home.
