Return to the City: The Strongest King
Chapter 965 - 966: Ambush

Chapter 965: Chapter 966: Ambush

Song Xiaodong had been busy the entire day. It wasn’t until dusk that he returned to the mountain cave.

Miao Xuanxuan and Miao Qingqing didn’t even bother to ask where Song Xiaodong had been. Wu Xiaoya, on the other hand, was eager to inquire, but seeing as even his wife hadn’t asked, she felt it inappropriate to do so herself and ended up keeping her questions to herself.

Song Xiaodong looked exhausted. After eating a little, he crawled into the mountain cave.

Here, there really wasn’t any nightlife to speak of. Once night fell, everyone could only sleep.

For the past two nights, Wu Xiaoya had shared the same cave with them. She hadn’t thought much of it; being with them gave her a strong sense of security. But tonight, she suddenly felt a little awkward staying in the same cave with them.

She couldn’t help but wonder if they would do anything inappropriate during the night. If they did, she wouldn’t know how to act as an outsider.

"Hurry up and get in here. Do you want to feed the mosquitoes?" Miao Xuanxuan called out to Wu Xiaoya.

Wu Xiaoya quickly replied, "Uh... You guys go ahead and sleep. I’m not tired yet."

"If you don’t sleep, how are we supposed to? Don’t tell me you want to stay up and watch us bang?" Miao Xuanxuan said with a mischievous smile.

"I..." Wu Xiaoya instantly turned crimson with embarrassment.

Miao Qingqing quickly interjected, "Xiaoya, don’t listen to Xuanxuan’s nonsense. Go to sleep. Dongzi is really exhausted today and needs to rest properly."

What Miao Qingqing said indirectly reassured Wu Xiaoya that they wouldn’t do anything with Song Xiaodong. Only then did Wu Xiaoya enter the cave, lying off to one side, still feeling deeply uncomfortable.

Normally, she would lie down and exchange a few words with Miao Qingqing and Miao Xuanxuan before drifting off to sleep without realizing it. But tonight, no matter what, she couldn’t fall asleep. Her mind was filled with images from earlier that day.

She was so worried that Miao Qingqing and Miao Xuanxuan might do something shameful with Song Xiaodong again. Even though it was pitch black and nothing could be seen, she was surprised to find herself faintly anticipating that they might.

She tossed and turned for a long time. Even after hearing the sounds of their steady breathing, signifying they had fallen asleep, she remained wide awake.

"Truly unimaginable. These twin sisters not only have a great bond but also live harmoniously with one man as if it were completely normal. Even doing that kind of thing so openly... Aren’t they worried about being seen? Could it be... Do they always sleep together like this? That’s just too absurd!"

If she had heard about something like this in the past, Wu Xiaoya would definitely have thought that these three were morally questionable. But after getting to know Song Xiaodong and the others, she felt they weren’t the type to act recklessly. In fact, they were all impressively composed and decent. Especially Miao Qingqing, who exuded the demeanor of someone of great stature. Yet she was capable of such behaviors? It was baffling beyond words.

The next morning, Song Xiaodong said to the three women, "Stay here, don’t go wandering around."

Miao Qingqing and Miao Xuanxuan both nodded in agreement and even waved their fists in encouragement.

"What’s he going to do?" Wu Xiaoya, who hadn’t slept well the previous night and was still groggy, asked absentmindedly.

"Taking care of those bastards. Let’s just wait here for the good news," Miao Xuanxuan said before casually flopping down again.

Wu Xiaoya couldn’t help but feel worried. The other side had so many people, and they were all strong and imposing. Could Song Xiaodong really handle them alone?

Song Xiaodong arrived at the orchard, moving leisurely as he searched for ripe fruit. Before long, he spotted three figures: Li Fangding’s group. They were hiding behind three trees, clearly intending to ambush him.

Song Xiaodong let out a cold chuckle and walked directly toward their hiding spot.

Once he stepped into the trap-like zone, the three men immediately jumped out. They were Cao Heyang, an American, and another Chinese man.

"What do you want?" Song Xiaodong asked, pretending to be flustered.

Cao Heyang sneered and said, "Kid, you’ve only got yourself to blame for showing off too much. We’ve had our eyes on you. We wanted you to team up with us, but you refused. Now, you’ve chosen your own demise. Don’t blame us for what happens next."

"You’re going to kill me?"

"What do you think?" Cao Heyang’s face twisted viciously. He waved his hand and shouted, "Get him!"

The three men, all armed with sturdy wooden clubs as thick as an arm, swung them at Song Xiaodong without holding back. It was clear they intended to kill him outright.

Song Xiaodong dropped the fruit in his hands, quickly ducking to avoid the strikes, and then took off running.

"Damn it, you idiots! Hurry and chase him!" Cao Heyang roared angrily, clutching his club as he gave chase.

Song Xiaodong ran swiftly, and the three pursuers matched his speed, determined not to let him escape.

But it seemed the three were slightly faster, quickly gaining on Song Xiaodong. Just as they were about to catch him, Song Xiaodong abruptly turned a corner. The sudden turn caused the three men to overshoot and take a couple of extra steps forward.

"Ah!" A blood-curdling scream pierced the air as the American suddenly plummeted straight into the ground.

Cao Heyang and the other Chinese man instinctively sidestepped, narrowly avoiding falling in themselves. However, it was too late to save the man who had fallen.

In that split second, the fallen man let out another gut-wrenching scream. Cao Heyang and his companion, now pale with shock, realized it was a deep pit, clearly freshly dug—a trap meant for them.

Looking down, they saw the American lying at the bottom of the pit, which was lined with upright wooden stakes. The stakes were sharpened to deadly points, several of which had pierced through the man’s chest and abdomen.

He wasn’t dead yet. His eyes were wide open, his body trembling slightly, and blood poured from his mouth in great quantities. It was clear he wouldn’t survive.

Cao Heyang and the other man felt a chill run down their spines. They turned and hurriedly backed away from the trap.

After retreating a few steps, they spotted Song Xiaodong. The two exchanged a furious look and charged after him again. On this island, without tools, setting up a trap like that required significant effort. They didn’t believe that Song Xiaodong could prepare a second one.

Song Xiaodong’s expression of panic seemed to confirm their assumptions as he turned and ran again.

But shortly after resuming their chase, Song Xiaodong suddenly ducked low. At that moment, a tree that had been leaning at an angle suddenly sprang upright. Two sharpened branches shot out like spears toward Cao Heyang and his companion.

Thwack!

A muffled sound echoed as one of the branches pierced straight through a man’s chest, pinning him to a tree behind him with a violent motion.
