Chapter 91: What was the point in going on?
He looked down at the eyes of everyone present. Jasper, who had let out his last pathetic scream, finally fell unconscious on the battle platform, the fingers of his right hand completely fractured.
The presenter, who had been silent upon seeing Jasper unconscious, finally spoke like a true professional:
[And after a battle that left us breathless... KAEL MEDICI IS THE VICTOR! With this performance, he advances directly to the semifinals of the Grand Spring Tournament! And that wraps up the quarterfinals!]
The entire audience remained silent, but some couldn’t help sighing with relief: this long torture was finally over.
But this "fight" had left its mark on many people, especially innocent children who had accompanied their parents to the coliseum. What they witnessed today would mark them for life.
The presenter, seeing the mood of the audience, didn’t know how to get them going again. But he understood them, because what they had seen was a public execution, where Jasper’s honor had been trampled on after being humiliated in such a cold way.
And he continued with his work:
[Now that the quarterfinals are behind us, it’s time to reveal the matchups that will shake up the semifinals... TOMORROW!]
He paused briefly, took a deep breath, and raised his voice even higher, firing up the crowd.
[To kick things off with fire and pure spectacle, we have AXEL VALENTÍN... against RYO PERIDOT! Two titans ready to give it their all on stage!]
The crowd roared with excitement, caught up in the presenter’s enthusiasm, but he raised his hand, preparing to close.
[And to crown this sixth day of the Grand Tournament, a duel that everyone has been waiting for...! KAEL MEDICI... VERSUS... MICHEL ABRAHAM! LET THE MADNESS BEGIN!]
With those emotional words from the announcer, the sixth day of the Grand Spring Tournament came to an end.
The crowd, caught up in the announcer’s excitement, began to leave the coliseum with mixed feelings.
...
Rumors about Kael’s "fight" against Jasper spread like wildfire through the bustling city, filled with families walking along the cobblestone streets.
"I couldn’t imagine Kael Medici being capable of something so cruel... How could he torture his brother like that?"
"Because of that monster, my son trembles every time his name is mentioned! How can someone be so heartless?"
"It breaks my heart to think of poor Jasper... What could he have done to deserve such a horrible punishment?"
"Even though he lost, he will always be a true winner to me. No one should have to endure such cruelty, least of all from their brother."
And the rumors about the fight between Kael and Jasper continued to circulate, becoming increasingly distorted and bizarre.
But they had one thing in common: Kael’s name was synonymous with terror and fear among all the citizens of the Medici territory.
In the Medici mansion, hidden behind closed doors and servants who avoided looking, one of the rooms reeked of confinement and misery.
There, huddled in a corner on the cold floor, Jasper trembled uncontrollably. He was wrapped in a dirty blanket, curled up in a fetal position, like a frightened child. He didn’t speak. He didn’t eat. He just trembled.
After regaining consciousness, his mother had visited him... not with compassion, but with contempt. Without saying a word, she cut off three fingers of his other hand. "For the shame you brought on me," she muttered before leaving. No one ever came back.
Since then, his mind has been trapped in a loop of horror. Every time he closed his eyes, he relived the scene: Kael’s unflinching face, the pressure on his hands, the crunching of bones, his voice muffled by blood and mucus.
The physical pain no longer mattered. It was the memory that was tearing him apart. The fear. The helplessness. The fact that he hadn’t even been a worthy enemy, just a broken toy in front of thousands of eyes.
Jasper was on the verge of madness. His gaze was no longer that of a nobleman, not even that of a human being.
His name, once spoken with respect, now evoked only pity.
And deep down, Jasper knew it.
He would never get up again.
What was the point in going on?
To endure another day feeling like less than a dog?
He brought the knife to his throat. His hand was shaking. Not from fear... but from hatred.
But just before he pressed down, something crossed his mind.
Alessia.
Kael’s mother.
The bastard whore who ruined everything.
If she hadn’t given birth to that bastard...
She was the one who allowed all this to happen.
And she was still alive.
Jasper slowly lowered the knife. His breathing became heavy, sickly, full of contained rage.
He wasn’t going to die. Not yet.
Not until she begged on her knees for the same thing he had lost: dignity.
And in his dry mouth, for the first time in hours, a sick smile appeared.
...
Several hours later, night had fallen.
The moon hung high in the sky, with no stars, as clouds slowly covered it.
In the forest near the city, the sounds of wild beasts moving in packs could be heard, destroying everything in their path.
On the walls protecting the city, the guards on duty saw a large group of shadows approaching rapidly, overflowing with madness.
At first, they paid no attention, but when the growls began to rumble, they reacted instantly and conjured light magic. What was revealed blinded them for a second: a horde of lightning boars, their eyes bloodshot, charging toward them.
"Quick, send the signal! We’re being attacked by a swarm of beasts!" shouted one of the guards, his voice broken with panic.
In the distance, a colossal boar nearly five meters tall raised its horns. A plasma sphere began to form on them, spinning violently before being launched directly at the wall.
When the guards saw him, they cast light spells into the air from multiple points. The sky was filled with bright colors, like fireworks.
The citizens who looked up smiled excitedly, believing it was part of a show for the spring tournament semifinals.
Then came the explosion.
BOOOOM!
The entire city shook. In seconds, chaos engulfed everything. Bloodcurdling screams filled the air.
The festive atmosphere disappeared, replaced by panic, crying, and the raw sound of despair.
