Chapter 689: Chapter 686: Grand Finale (Part 1)

Xia Yiwan had the key to Yanxi’s room; she opened the door and walked in.

The room was eerily silent, with only the sound of the howling wind and pouring rain from outside as the windows were not soundproof.

Although Xia Yiwan had an umbrella, her body was still drenched.

Not minding the chill in her own body, she made her way to the bedroom door.

She gently turned the doorknob and peeked inside.

No lights were on in the room, but the dim yellow light from the corridor spilled in, illuminating the slender figure hunched over in bed.

The man seemed to be in discomfort, curled up and letting out a series of hoarse moans.

Xia Yiwan hurried over.

She lightly tapped on the headboard.

Lately, she had been pretending to be mute in front of him; their communication was through a couple of taps on objects.

The man showed no reaction.

Xia Yiwan pulled back the quilt and touched his forehead.

Burning hot.

He had a fever.

Fortunately, she had recently stocked up on medicine here, so Xia Yiwan quickly went to get some cold medicine.

When she brought the medicine in, the man seemed to be having a nightmare.

"Wanwan, Wanwan..."

He kept calling her name.

Xia Yiwan tried to help him sit up to take the medicine, but he suddenly gripped her wrist.

Her slender body, caught off guard, fell into his embrace.

He opened his eyes to pitch darkness, unable to see any light.

Yet, he dimly felt that Xia Yiwan seemed to be back at his side.

This must be a dream!

Only in dreams was she so close to him.

He raised his hand and stroked her delicate face.

Her skin, fine and smooth; her features, bright and lovely.

It was her!

She had appeared in his dream.

Xia Yiwan, having her face touched by him, had intended to push him away.

But then, she saw tears in his eyes.

Her heart softened instantly.

She bit down hard on her lower lip, her voice husky, "Yanxi, you have a cold. You need to take medicine."

Hearing Xia Yiwan’s voice, the man pulled her tightly into his arms.

"Wanwan, please don’t leave me, okay?"

"Yanxi, be good and take your medicine first..."

Xia Yiwan hadn’t finished her sentence when he suddenly kissed her.

At the moment of their lips meeting, Xia Yiwan was stunned.

She widened her eyes in disbelief, looking at the man in front of her who seemed almost crazed.

He, he...

She wanted to push him away, but the tears that kept falling from his blank, lackluster eyes whipped her heart with searing ferocity.

Xia Yiwan shuddered, then quickly came to her senses, forcefully pushing him away and dodging his kiss.

Yanxi buried his face in her neck, his voice a hoarse whisper, "Wanwan, if this wasn’t a dream, how wonderful that would be..."

Xia Yiwan said nothing more.

She forcefully fed him the medicine and only after making sure he was asleep did she leave.

...

Xia Yiwan had almost taken care of Yanxi the entire night.

She only left after his fever subsided.

Aunt Yan was waiting outside the house early; upon seeing Xia Yiwan coming out looking exhausted, she quickly asked, "Wanwan, how is Yanxi? Did you take care of him and stayed up all night?"

Xia Yiwan nodded, "He had a fever. I fed him medicine, and now his fever has subsided."

Yanxi tightly grasped Xia Yiwan’s hand, his eyes reddening, "Wanwan, you really have had it tough!"

Just as Xia Yiwan was about to say something, suddenly, the sound of something falling was heard.

Xia Yiwan and Yanxi turned around at the same time.

Yanxi, unbeknownst to them, had gotten up, leaning on a cane at the doorway.

Perhaps hearing their conversation, the cane had fallen from his hand, and he stood on one leg, his whole body shaking, on the verge of collapsing.

Xia Yiwan and Mother Yan both rushed forward at the same time.

The two of them steadied Yanxi to prevent him from falling.

But the next second, Yanxi reached out and pushed them both away.

Looking at Yanxi’s agitated and angry expression, Xia Yiwan pursed her lips tightly and said to Mother Yan, "Aunt Yan, you go back first, I want to have a talk with Yanxi alone."

Mother Yan hesitated, her words caught in her throat.

Eventually, she left.

Xia Yiwan picked up the cane from the ground and handed it back to Yanxi, looking at his intensely strained profile, she said, "I’ll go make breakfast first."

Xia Yiwan went into the kitchen.

After making breakfast, she came to the bedroom to call the man.

The man was sitting in the wheelchair, and upon hearing her footsteps, he did not look up.

He had an air of lifelessness about him, as if he had lost all vitality.

Xia Yiwan walked up to him, suddenly raised her hand, and fiercely slapped his handsome face.

His complexion was pale, and that slap immediately left five red finger marks.

The man seemed to feel the pain as he slowly lifted his head and looked at her.

His empty pupils seemed to contract slightly.

Xia Yiwan, unable to contain her fury, exclaimed, "What are you still sulking about with us? Don’t you know your mother’s condition? How worried has she been about you this past month, and as a son, do you truly not care or feel for her at all?"

"We finally found you and didn’t dare to reveal our identities, for fear of upsetting you, but what about you? Even after knowing it’s us, do you still want to push us away?"

"Yanxi, how long will you wallow in self-pity? Do you think you can really be free by coming here alone?"

Perhaps due to the grievances of the past few days all bursting forth, Xia Yiwan could no longer control her emotions and started shouting.

"Even in my darkest times, I never gave up on myself; as a man, can’t you bravely face everything?"

"Yes, you are broken and don’t have long to live, but can’t you spend your limited days creating the most beautiful memories?"

"Please, don’t make your mother and me worry anymore, okay?"

For a long time, the man was silent.

Xia Yiwan stared at him for a long while, and seeing that he remained silent, her heart gradually grew cold.

"If you don’t want to see me, I’ll leave now; I will bring Aunt Wang back to take care of you."

Xia Yiwan wiped the tears from the corner of her eye, turned around, and ran outside.

Hearing her retreating footsteps, a crack finally appeared on the man’s face.

He pressed the controls of the wheelchair, wanting to chase after her.

But upon reaching the doorway, he heard no sound at all.

She had left.

Really left!

"Wanwan, Wanwan..."

He held his head in his hands, like a wounded beast, his voice hoarsely calling out her name.

Before long, a soft little hand reached out and gently took hold of his large hand.

"Yanxi, I haven’t left!"

Hearing Xia Yiwan’s voice, Yanxi reached out and hugged her.

His face rested in her embrace, his arms holding her tightly.

"Wanwan, I didn’t want you to see me at my worst..."

"Yanxi, can you face everything openly, please?"

After a long silence, the man nodded, "Alright."

Xia Yiwan called Mother Yan, and when Mother Yan arrived, mother and son hugged each other, sobbing for a long time.

Seeing this scene, Xia Yiwan’s eyes also reddened.

Yanxi didn’t want to go back to the city; Xia Yiwan and Mother Yan still stayed with him there.

After he faced everything openly, indeed, their lives were filled with more laughter and joy.
