Chapter 688: Chapter 685: Find Him, Accompany Him
Xia Yiwan and Mother Yan had been searching for nearly a month.
Yanxi was still nowhere to be found.
Mother Yan had fallen ill several times.
At this moment, Xia Yiwan truly hated Yanxi’s heartlessness.
He had run off without a second thought, did he not care about his mother’s feelings at all?
Xia Yiwan sat beside Mother Yan’s sickbed, looking at her much thinner form, her heart ached immensely.
"Aunt Yan, rest assured, I will definitely find Yanxi."
In the past month, Xia Yiwan had been tirelessly searching for Yanxi, enduring much hardship.
Mother Yan had seen it all.
A once happy and complete family had become shattered and she was in deep distress.
Wanwan was truly too good, but unfortunately, their family’s Yanxi didn’t have the fortune to appreciate that.
"Wanwan, you’ve gone through too much trouble and hardship."
After Mother Yan fell asleep, Xia Yiwan walked out to the balcony, letting the cool night breeze blow over her.
She propped her forehead with her fingers, wondering where on earth Yanxi could have gone?
The ringing of her phone suddenly broke the silence.
It was a call from Mother Xia.
Mother Xia asked if she wanted to return home in a few days to pay respects at the graves?
Xia Yiwan’s mind suddenly lit up, her hometown?
As children, it was where her fate with Yanxi began, back in their hometown.
There, she had saved him.
Although he later mistook her for Shi Ying, might he have gone back to where they first met at the end of his life?
Thinking this might be a possibility, Xia Yiwan hurried back home overnight.
The next morning, Xia Yiwan arrived at the mountain and found the river within it.
There weren’t many inhabitants around, it could be considered desolate.
However, not far from the riverbank there was a village.
An old relative of the Xia family used to live in this village, but they had moved to the city more than a decade ago.
Xia Yiwan went to the village and after some inquiries, sure enough, she found out that a month ago someone had bought a house and moved in.
The person who informed Xia Yiwan of this was the owner of the small grocery store.
The kind-hearted store owner, seeing how delicate and pretty Xia Yiwan was, told her, "I saw the man when he arrived, he seemed to be in a wheelchair and was pushed into the house."
"Aunt Wang from the village, it seems, was hired by him to take care of his meals. I heard Aunt Wang say that the man is quite handsome, but his eyes can’t see and one of his legs is disabled."
As Xia Yiwan listened to the store owner, tears unconsciously began to stream down her face.
The sight of Xia Yiwan crying so suddenly scared the store owner.
"Miss, what’s the matter?"
Xia Yiwan wiped her tears, her voice choked, "He is the one I’ve been looking for."
She didn’t know why she had started crying.
Perhaps it was because she had finally found him, or maybe it was because he had hidden in the place where they first met!
"I’m fine, thank you," she said to the store owner.
Xia Yiwan quickly ran towards the house that the store owner had mentioned.
As she was running over, she happened to see Aunt Wang carrying a basket coming her way.
"Excuse me, are you Aunt Wang?"
Aunt Wang looked at Xia Yiwan, taken aback for a moment, but quickly recognized her, "You are Mr. Yan’s beloved, aren’t you?"
Xia Yiwan was a bit stunned.
She didn’t understand why Aunt Wang would say that.
Seeing the confusion on Xia Yiwan’s face, Aunt Wang hastened to explain, "Mr. Yan often takes out your photo and caresses it. Although he can’t see, from the way he touches the photo, I can tell he loves you a lot."
Xia Yiwan neither confirmed nor denied it.
She pulled Aunt Wang aside and discussed a matter with her.
After listening, Aunt Wang agreed to Xia Yiwan’s request.
"Okay, I will help you."
Aunt Wang and Xia Yiwan entered the house one after the other.
Xia Yiwan saw the man she hadn’t seen for a month.
He was sitting in a wheelchair, dressed in black clothing, his peach blossom eyes unfocused as they stared ahead, his pale and thin handsome face void of any expression, lips tightly pressed together, indeed holding a photo of her in his hand.
The edges of the photo appeared somewhat worn from being touched frequently.
Upon seeing this scene, Xia Yiwan’s nose suddenly felt sore.
Aunt Wang approached Yanxi’s side and said carefully, "Mr. Yan, I’ve got some family matters to attend to recently, so I’m letting my niece take care of you for a few days. My niece is mute and can’t speak, but she knows how to do everything. Don’t worry, she will take good care of you."
The man’s expression was indifferent, like still water, with no ripples of emotion.
After a long while, he waved his hand, signaling Aunt Wang to leave.
Taking Yanxi’s gesture as an agreement, she said to Xia Yiwan, "Xiao Zhi, you take care of Mr. Yan."
Xia Yiwan, unable to speak, gently tapped on the table.
"Mr. Yan, just give my niece your instructions directly if you need anything. She’s had a tough life, and I hope you can give her a chance to work."
The man said nothing.
Aunt Wang handed the basket she was holding to Xia Yiwan, "Xiao Zhi, go and cook lunch for Mr. Yan quickly!"
Xia Yiwan took the basket and went into the kitchen.
In an hour, she prepared three dishes and a soup.
She deliberately altered the taste of her cooking, fearing that Yanxi would recognize it.
After serving the food on the dining table, she pushed the man towards it.
She handed him the bowl and chopsticks.
Though he couldn’t see, his way of eating remained unhurried and meticulous.
Xia Yiwan watched him for a while, when suddenly, in the silent air, his voice sounded, "Looking at what?"
Xia Yiwan’s heart jumped.
Even though he couldn’t see, he seemed to sense her gaze upon him.
Xia Yiwan quickly averted her eyes and thought of Mother Yan, who was anxiously searching for Yanxi. She stepped out and discreetly called Mother Yan.
She informed Mother Yan of the situation here.
Mother Yan arrived that afternoon.
Worried that her presence would disturb Yanxi, she didn’t enter the house.
When Xia Yiwan pushed Yanxi outside for a walk, Mother Yan watched him from a great distance.
Seeing her son like this, no one could be more heartbroken and pained than she, a mother.
Mother Yan knew that Yanxi didn’t have long to live, and that a few years after he passed away, she would go to accompany him.
Mother Yan wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes, turned around, and headed to the village chief’s house.
Mother Yan also bought a house in the village.
Since Yanxi did not require overnight care, Xia Yiwan would return to the house Mother Yan bought after her shift.
In the evenings, Xia Yiwan and Mother Yan worried about Yanxi, occasionally going to the door of his dwelling to linger and observe.
For instance, when he needed to use the restroom or take a shower, it seemed he managed to do so with the support of a cane on his own.
Perhaps in the last month, he had become accustomed to such a life; Xia Yiwan and Mother Yan saw no signs of him falling.
Thus, Xia Yiwan and Mother Yan stayed in the village for nearly a week.
That night, the sky suddenly unleashed a violent storm.
Xia Yiwan and Mother Yan were both awakened by it.
Mother Yan, concerned about Yanxi, wanted to check on him. Seeing the atrocious weather outside, Xia Yiwan quickly stopped Mother Yan, "Mother Yan, I will go to see Yanxi. You’re elderly, and going out in the rain could easily cause you to catch a cold."
"Wanwan, be careful yourself."
Xia Yiwan nodded, "Okay."
