"They have been talking to humans for half of the day, but they have identified the assassin—he was a member of a noble house that was loyal to the previous High King. As I was told, Farini imprisoned his family for siding against him, and the assassin was angry about it. He was probably trying to take revenge."

After reciting this information almost like she was reading from a sheet of paper, Ambrosia shook her head.

"Humans are baffling me again with their disloyalty. Do you think it’s a problem we should be worried about?"

I let out a sigh.

"Political intrigues of this scale really shouldn’t be our problem. With humans, they will *always* be present. Farini already has Agents on his side monitoring the thoughts of his subjects. Honestly! Despite all this, Farini allowed some home-made avenger to survive and get to where he got! I’m going to give the man a stern talking-to. Don’t you know how the assassin survived the capture of his family, Amby?"

My wife shook her head.

"I didn’t ask. Is this relevant to the investigation?"

"Not really, but if he survived because Farini let his kind heart run amok and just let the guy go..." I chewed my lip. "Anyway, Whisper should know all this. She can chew Farini’s ears in my stead. She knows all his soft spots better than anyone."

He was her "personal human", after all. Agent Bees that were placed to watch over a single person often got as attached to "their" humans as beast tamers to their chosen beasts.

This had a potential to be troublesome, but a special bond that appeared between such a bee and her human or beast increased the effectiveness of their work.

"I will bring Whisper the results of the investigation and your words, Nectus," Ambrosia said. "But it looks like there’s no need for a wide alarm. So... what, do you think, will happen next?"

She made a broad gesture at the surrounding room.

"What countries are we going to conquer? What lands?"

I opened my mouth to answer, but was rudely interrupted.

The system which seemingly was asleep the entire day suddenly woke up.

It took me a moment to stop gaping like a fish and find my words again.

"I actually got a reward for uniting our countries! Besides, the empire stat increases and the development points—something special! And very useful, too." I was grinning. "This must’ve been one of the rewards built into the system by the Goddess of Bees in its original human-hating design. The God of Humanity still won’t reward me for saving anybody, I bet. He—"

I let out a breath. Next to me, Ambrosia pushed a cup of tea in my hands, and I gratefully took a sip. She watched me cautiously but patiently as I focused on conversing with the system.

’No, wait, let’s go in order. System, so with this "Morphotyping Pheromones Distribution" gene my children will "save" in them copies of the morphotype templates I had when I seeded them, and then will be able to spread them?’

<Yes, user.>

’Will these copies be updated if I share my genes through the vertical gene transfer?’

I grinned again. Great! No more flying all over the country just to share my genes. It will take a lot of bloodletting, but now my daughter-Queens will be able to do all the morphotyping themselves! There won’t be any need to have not-morphotyped Worker Bees!

I and Amby can rear more Queens, too...

Or—and it was a scary idea—we could rear some Drone Bees. In the Empire we were carefully cultivating precious wild males to prevent inbreeding, so we didn’t rear our own Drone Bees, of course.

But these Drone Bees could fly all over the Empire just to morphotype people. The gene requirement was only for the bee to be fertile, which excluded Worker Bees, but not Drones.

’This would be such a sad life to doom my sons on... Life of total virgins... I don’t trust any Drone Bees, either. Even if they inherit my smarts, nothing can fix the fact that their brain is placed in their dicks!’

The memories of the last time I met with a Drone Bee were still fresh in my mind, even years later.

I raised my eyebrows.

Go beyond the maximum? Some of my genes were already giving (supposedly) full immunity to things!

What would happen if they got even stronger? How much of a difference would the single limit break point might make?

I had to find out immediately!

I opened my status screen and began scrolling through the bloated menus and lists.

"Amby, this might take a while. There’s no need for you to sit around..." I spoke, only to see her shift closer to me and caress my forearm with the tips of her claws.

"Oh, no, Necty. I won’t go away while you are gaining some... bonuses," she almost purred. "Just tell me how good they are."
