Chapter 86: Because you’re Hello Kitty.
Chapter 86: Because you’re Hello Kitty.
Lu Qingyan was walking mindlessly, still thinking about the embarrassing thing she did.
"AHH!"
When she finally came back to her senses, a scream suddenly came from the crowd in front of her.
Heads turned, students gasped, and Lu Qingyan’s eyes shot forward just in time to see a small figure—no more than nine years old—faceplant on the cement, entangled with a pink, beat-up scooter.
The boy’s clothes were dusty, his cheeks smudged with dirt, and yet he didn’t even cry. He just blinked, stunned, then slowly turned his head toward the person he had rammed into.
Lu Qingyan followed the girl’s gaze, and only then did she realize that the person the little girl ran into was Lin Ruoyu. She was the one who had screamed just now after being hit in the waist
Lu Qingyan felt a bitter twist in her stomach. She’d been seeing Lin Ruoyu too often lately—always lurking around Special Class’s hallway like she had nothing better to do. The timing always made Qingyan suspicious. It was like she was waiting for someone specific.
"Why are little kids even allowed near our school?" Lin Ruoyu’s friend huffed nearby, brushing invisible dirt off her designer skirt. "It’s crowded enough. And they’re still zooming around with dangerous stuff like scooters?"
Lu Qingyan expected Ruoyu to be irritated, but instead, the girl smiled warmly—that kind of saintly, soft-focus-filter smile that seemed rehearsed—and helped the little boy to his feet.
But it appeared as if Lin Ruoyu hadn’t taken it to heart as she helped the little boy up with a warm smile.
Lin Ruoyu bent down and helped the little boy up with a smile so warm it could’ve melted the ice caps. "It’s alright," she said sweetly, brushing dirt off his shirt. "Kids are naturally a little mischievous."
Her friend groaned. "Ruoyu, your temper is way too good. If it were me, I would’ve thrown that scooter into the nearest trash bin."
After the two people left, the little boy lifted the scooter up in an exasperatingly slow manner, and his movements appeared somewhat strenuous. When he was halfway through on lifting it, he suddenly felt that it had gotten a lot lighter. He raised her eyes and saw that someone had helped her.
He froze for a moment, then quietly said, "Thank you."
Lu Qingyan crouched down to his level, eyes landing on his scraped knee.
It was red and raw, with tiny pebbles embedded in the skin. He had tried to wipe it himself, but only made the wound messier. Still, he hadn’t shed a single tear.
She recalled how she also used to be like this. When she was bullied, her knees would be injured, there was even a small scar left over from it.
When she was young, she was ignorant. After all, it wasn’t considered beautiful for girls to have scars on their bodies.
It just so happened that in order to prevent her wound from coming into contact with water, she had put on a band-aid. Now, she happened to have some extras in her pocket.
She took out a band-aid and very carefully stuck it to the little boy’s knee.
Then she shoved another one into his hand.
She said softly, "When you go back, make sure to clean the wound and then use this new one."
The little boy anxiously watched Lu Qingyan’s movements, then after a long time, he asked in a milky voice, "What’s on this sticker?"
Lu Qingyan was stunned for a moment before she looked down at the band-aid. Then she softly explained, "This is Hello Kitty."
The little boy blinked, then he pointed to the back of Lu Qingyan hand and asked, "Is it the same as the one on you hand?"
She followed his gaze.
Sure enough, she had the same band-aid on the back of her hand from the incident on Saturday night.
She smiled. "yeah. I got hurt too because I wasn’t careful. But it’s not a big deal."
The little boy stared at the band-aid for a while, before he suddenly changed the subject, "Do you know the person I bumped into just now?"
Lu Qingyan knew that he was referring to Lin Ruoyu.
She shook her head, "Don’t know."
The little boy pursed her lips and said, "She obviously doesn’t like me, so why did she help me up?"
Lu Qingyan action to stand up slightly paused.
She looked down at the boy and asked with knitted eyebrows, "Huh?"
"She looked at me weird. Like I was... annoying." The boy’s voice was soft now. "So why did she smile like that?"
Lu Qingyan was surprised. "What?"
The boy didn’t answer. He suddenly looked hesitant.
The little boy became silent, so Lu Qingyan took the initiative to ask her, "Little brother, who are you waiting for?"
The little boy paused, then suddenly said, "I remembered my big brother told me not to talk to strangers."
Lu Qingyan: ???
Lu Qingyan’s face was full of question marks, "Then why did you talk to me just now?"
The little boy hesitated for a moment, then she pointed to the band-aid on her knee, "Because you are Hello Kitty."
Lu Qingyan explained, "I’m not Hello Kitty, the little kitten on the band-aid is.
The little boy nodded and then said as if it was a matter of course, "You two look the same."
Lu Qingyan: ???
Lu Qingyan opened her mouth to argue—then gave up. She had the lingering suspicion that even if she showed him her ID, he’d still insist she lived in Sanrio Town.
Lu Qingyan stopped entangling herself with this question and instead warned her, "Take this band-aid off when you get home and make sure to not get water on the wound."
The little boy tilted her head, a little puzzled, "Can this sticker cure illnesses?"
Lu Qingyan smiled, "Of course."
The little raised her head to look at her, "The doctor said I am ill, can this sticker cure me?"
