Chapter 85: How beautiful was it?

Chapter 85: How beautiful was it?

Why was it so hard to photograph this man?!

She wasn’t even trying to sneak into a government facility—just take one decent picture of her seatmate! And yet, it felt like trying to scale the Great Wall in heels!

Snap a candid pic of Wang Jingyuan, they said.

It’ll be easy, they said.

Well, "they" had clearly never met a boy who could dodge photos with the precision of a CIA operative avoiding facial recognition.

She’d tried it all—pretending to scroll, fake selfies, mirror tricks. Each attempt ended in failure. Either he moved at the last second or turned into a sentient shadow.

It was only when the day was almost over, that she was finally able find an opening.

When the physics class ended, Peng Jianda came over to ask Wang Jingyuan a question.

While the two were both focused on the paper, Lu Qingyan took advantage of the moment and quietly took out the phone from her sleeve.

Lu Qingyan wiped a bead of sweat from her temple—figuratively. In reality, she was frozen in place, watching Wang Jingyuan two seats away like a nature photographer stalking a rare tiger through tall grass.

Wang Jingyuan was busy. Not just brooding-staring-out-the-window busy, but actually busy. Peng Jianda, the class clown genius and her lowkey favorite gossip source, had come over to ask a question. The two boys were now hunched over a worksheet like it was a classified nuclear blueprint.

Lu Qingyan’s instincts kicked in.

Target acquired.

She pointed the camera at Wang Jingyuan’s side profile.

The light illuminated from behind him, outlining his sharp and distinct side profile. It was as if he was coated in a layer of light, making his somewhat cold expression several degrees softer.

Lu Qingyan held her breath and quietly pressed the button.

She very casually slid her phone out from her sleeve like a secret agent retrieving a miniature weapon. Slowly, stealthily, she angled it at Wang Jingyuan’s side profile.

Click.

Pause.

And then, as if the heavens had decided to personally sabotage her, a burst of white light flashed from the back of her phone.

FLASH.

And to add salt to the wound—KACHA!

The classroom was originally relatively quiet because it was after class, so the sound was especially harsh on the ear.

The two who were initially discussing the question both stopped at this moment.

His long, narrow eyes narrowed further, just enough to make her heart hiccup. The golden sunset light outside filtered in at an angle, brushing the bridge of his nose like a spotlight. His side profile—the one she just risked her social life to photograph—was even more unreal up close. Sharp jaw. Delicate lips. Slight shadow under his eyes, giving him a weary, almost poetic look.

Too bad he was looking straight at her.

Lu Qingyan: "..."

??

It’s over, she forgot to turn off the flash and sound!!

Her body was stiff. She debated throwing the phone out the window or just faking a faint.

Not only did they notice, but many others nearby also noticed.

Wang Jingyuan stared at the phone case that faced him. There was even an extremely large and eye-catching "Kissmet" on it.

Then, his gaze moved slightly and landed on Lu Qingyan’s hand that was holding the phone.

He noticed that there was a band-aid on the back of her hand.

Wang Jingyuan’s eyelashes moved slightly.

Peng Jianda was somewhat puzzled, "Xiao Yan, are you taking pictures of us?"

Lu Qingyan mind was utterly empty.

She frantically flicked through her mental encyclopedia for a believable excuse. Her voice emerged, surprisingly calm. "No. I was, uh, taking a picture of... the sunset."

Peng Jianda was unconvinced, "But there’s no sunset at this time."

"There was a...cloud," she blurted, praying he was gullible."A really beautiful one. It probably... floated away."

Peng Jianda turned his head, "Clouds? There aren’t any clouds either."

Lu Qingyan resisted the urge to smash something with a hammer and slowly said, "There was a rather beautiful one just now, it probably already floated away."

Peng Jianda let out an "oh" sound, "But I don’t see one."

Lu Qingyan clenched her fists around her phone. "Well, it was there just now. A really fast one. Probably going to rain soon."

Peng Jianda nodded, looking up with deep contemplation. "So fast... it’s probably a ninja cloud."

"...Exactly," she said, deadpan

After Peng Jianda left, Wang Jingyuan supported his chin and unhurriedly asked, "How beautiful was it?"

Lu Qingyan: "Ah?"

Wang Jingyuan gaze was deep as his tone carried certain meanings, "That cloud, how beautiful was it?"

Lu Qingyan’s mind blanked—then filled with the image from earlier: his sunlit profile, soft glow, distant eyes. Her mouth moved before she could stop it. "...Very beautiful."

Wang Jingyuan tilted his head, almost smiling, but not quite.

He leaned back in his chair, long legs stretched out under the desk. The faint shadows under his eyes made him look tired, or perhaps just bored with the world.

"Then you should keep an eye on it," he murmured, his voice husky. "Don’t let it float away next time."

She blinked.

Lu Qingyan wasn’t sure what he meant by his words, but she heard a hint of ridicule.

He turned away without explaining, propping his cheek on one hand as he returned to his notes.

Lu Qingyan sat there for a few seconds more, dumbfounded, clutching her phone like it held state secrets.

She had previously added Wen Mingming’s Wechat, so she sent her the photo through that medium.
