Reborn to outshine My Ex and His White Moonlight -
Chapter 182 Unnecessary
Chapter 182: Chapter 182 Unnecessary
When Old Mr. Gong arrived, Lin Zhiyi immediately pushed Gong Chen away.
With his injured leg, Gong Chen’s body swayed on the bed before steadying himself, his gaze darkening as he looked at Lin Zhiyi.
"Go back first."
"Okay."
Lin Zhiyi thought about it and agreed.
This matter, indeed, was not something she could explain all by herself.
But as she was about to leave, the door was forcefully pushed open.
As soon as the old man entered and saw the injured Gong Chen, his gaze was filled with fury.
When his eyes swept over Lin Zhiyi, he delivered a loud slap.
"Is this how you repay the Gong Family for raising you? Such a disgrace to the family!"
Lin Zhiyi’s body hadn’t recovered, and she slammed into the wall, seeing stars and bleeding from her mouth.
Yet, the old man was not appeased, and his hand swung back to strike again.
But it was intercepted mid-air by Gong Chen.
His injured leg, from moving too quickly, caused the stitched wound to burst open, instantly staining the gauze red.
Seeing this, Old Mr. Gong glared fiercely, "Gong Chen! What do you mean? She caused you such harm, and I can’t beat her?"
"No need."
Gong Chen’s eyes swept over the swollen face of Lin Zhiyi, his expression so grim it was terrifying, even gripping the old man’s hand tighter.
The old man, in pain, looked at Gong Chen in disbelief.
Father and son stood locked in a tense standoff.
Song Wanqiu, who had entered the room with the old man, suddenly rushed forward and embraced Gong Chen.
"Third Young Master, don’t move; your leg is still injured."
Tears streaming down her face, she turned to Old Mr. Gong, choking up, "Old Mr. Gong, please don’t be angry. Third Young Master meant that getting angry for Zhiyi’s sake isn’t necessary!"
Hearing this, Lin Zhiyi’s complexion turned deathly pale, making the red mark even more grotesque.
She looked up at Gong Chen, who just frowned, neither explaining nor denying.
So that was what he meant.
She understood.
Old Mr. Gong snorted coldly, forcefully yanking back his hand and pointing at the door, "Get out! I don’t want to see you!"
Song Wanqiu stepped forward and nudged Lin Zhiyi, "Zhiyi, don’t take it to heart. Old Mr. Gong is just worried about Third Young Master. Go apply some medicine. You can’t contribute to this discussion."
Though her words seemed conciliatory, they implied her true status.
Song Wanqiu acted like the lady of the house, while Lin Zhiyi was merely an outsider who couldn’t speak up.
Lin Zhiyi lowered her gaze and left the hospital room straight away.
As soon as she left, Li Huan arrived.
Seeing Gong Chen’s wound open, he quickly approached to support him, "Are you crazy? It didn’t reach the bone, but you have a severe infection and excessive blood loss. Are you trying to get amputated?"
Old Mr. Gong and Song Wanqiu were shocked into silence.
They had thought Gong Chen’s injuries weren’t severe as he had quickly risen earlier.
They hadn’t expected him to be just suffering through.
These words... made the faces of Old Mr. Gong and Song Wanqiu turn uglier than when they had entered, yet both concealed it well.
Li Huan called a nurse to help and re-bandaged the wound.
Gong Chen leaned against the bed, his complexion still pale, but his expression frighteningly calm.
He took a cigarette box from the bedside table, shook out a cigarette, and placed it between his lips.
Li Huan was about to remind him not to smoke, but upon meeting his gaze, inexplicably shuddered and stepped back.
As he lit the cigarette, Gong Chen’s eyes narrowed slightly, the flame from the lighter dancing over his handsome face. As the firelight went out, a puff of white smoke enveloped his gaze.
"Everyone else, out," he said lightly.
Li Huan and Chen Jin left first.
"You too," Gong Chen lifted his gaze, his eyes cold and impenetrable as he stared at Song Wanqiu.
Song Wanqiu instantly broke into a cold sweat on her back.
She clearly understood that the phrase ’everyone else’ was targeted at her, just as her earlier words had targeted Lin Zhiyi.
She dared not retort and turned to leave the room.
In the room, the smell of tobacco grew stronger, and Old Mr. Gong furrowed his brows.
"Sending everyone out. Are you preparing to confront me?"
"No, just seemed like you had something to say to me," Gong Chen said slowly, drawing on his cigarette.
Old Mr. Gong’s frown deepened as he fixated his gaze on Gong Chen.
He really wanted to understand his son’s thoughts, but the more he looked, the more it seemed obscured by a layer of smoke.
But now that the issue had been broached, there was no need to beat around the bush.
"Your Fifth Uncle and Sixth Uncle didn’t handle the situation well. Find a reason to release them and make Lin Zhiyi keep her mouth shut to avoid damaging the Gong Family’s reputation."
Gong Chen flicked the weak glow from his cigarette and sneered, "Is it actually Lin Zhiyi who’s harming the Gong Family’s reputation, or is it someone else?"
Old Mr. Gong clicked his tongue, "What do you mean by that?"
Gong Chen didn’t reply and instead, started playing the recorded conversation by Lin Zhiyi on his phone.
The more Old Mr. Gong listened, the more livid his face became.
Gong Chen said nonchalantly, "Neither of them holds a grudge against Lin Zhiyi, so why keep having someone watch her?"
Hearing this, Old Mr. Gong felt a chill down his spine.
He knew Gong Chen was clear about everything!
"Enough!" Old Mr. Gong said sternly while standing with his hands behind his back, "If you’re unwilling to release them, so be it, but the mine incident has already had a severe impact on the Gong Group."
"Don’t worry, dad. Before you arrived, I had the lawyers and public relations team negotiate compensation with the families, and the company’s apology statement has been issued. I will take over and rectify the mine. Currently, public opinion isn’t very negative, and everyone is satisfied with how I’m handling it."
After speaking, Gong Chen snuffed out his cigarette and looked coldly at Old Mr. Gong.
Old Mr. Gong took in a sharp breath and said with a cold laugh, "Good, good, a half cup of poison and a full cup of antidote. I had no idea you had this capability."
Everything was settled by the lawyer and public relations team in such a short time.
It was clear he was prepared way before he came to Shan City.
It seemed like he’d affected the Gong Family’s interests, but in reality, Gong Chen achieved everything he wanted.
Including the mine.
Gong Chen coldly declared, "Dad, I am a businessman."
Old Mr. Gong’s face tensed as he said harshly, "Fine. So using eye shielding technique on your own family by Lin Zhiyi is doing business too?"
"You’re overthinking it," Gong Chen responded without a direct answer and turned towards the door, "Chen Jin, escort Old Mr. Gong back to the hotel to rest."
Chen Jin opened the door and stepped forward respectfully, "Old Mr. Gong, please."
As they stepped outside,
Old Mr. Gong glanced down at the red mark on his wrist and just happened to make eye contact with Song Wanqiu.
Song Wanqiu felt unstable under his gaze and smiled lightly, "Old Mr. Gong, take care."
Old Mr. Gong squinted his eyes, assessing her intently from head to toe.
"To have been by his side for over three years and still be so useless."
Song Wanqiu choked back tears and said, "Old Mr. Gong, I am sincere about Third Young Master."
"Sincere? Good,"
Old Mr. Gong cryptically scoured her pitiable face.
...
Back in the hospital room.
Liu He was setting out food, and at the sight of her swollen face, was shocked.
"Who hit you? Who dared to hit you!"
"Old Mr. Gong," Lin Zhiyi replied honestly.
"Ah? He came?" Liu He pursed her lips, a mix of fear and sympathy crossing her face, "Why did you just stand there and let him hit you?"
Anyone else would’ve gotten angry at such a remark,
but Lin Zhiyi knew Liu He felt helpless.
Her relationship with Gong Shiyan had always been something that gnawed at the Gong Family.
Not to mention bringing along a child now.
In her youth, people admired Liu He for her beauty and repeatedly advised her to put Lin Zhiyi up for adoption and find a good family for herself.
Liu He flatly stated that such people had no good intentions.
So Lin Zhiyi had no right to blame Liu He.
Taking the towel from Liu He, she consoled her, "This slap was bound to come, let’s hope for some peace from now on."
Liu He hesitated, stopping herself from speaking further.
Lin Zhiyi knew she wanted to ask why Gong Chen hadn’t stopped it.
Probably because... there was no need.
