Chapter 66: The Unfinished Conversation

Diane exhaled deeply, staring at her phone as Gabriel’s message shone on the screen.

Something about the urgency in his words unsettled her.

She drummed her fingers against the desk, debating whether she should reply now or make him wait.

But before she could decide, another message popped up.

-Gabriel: If you do one more thing like that, you and I are going to have a real problem, Diane.-

Diane smirked. So he’s mad.

She clicked her nails against the desk, deciding she’d rather see his frustration in person than through a screen.

With that, she grabbed her coat and keys and headed out.

By the time she arrived at Gabriel’s office, the atmosphere felt like there was an electric dust in the air.

His assistant barely had time to acknowledge her before Diane pushed through the doors.

Gabriel was standing near his desk, his back to her, staring out the window as if trying to compose himself.

The moment she closed the door behind her, he turned immediately.

"You don’t listen, do you?" Gabriel’s voice was calm, too calm.

It sent a shiver down her spine.

Diane raised an eyebrow, tossing her coat over the chair.

"I don’t take orders, if that’s what you mean."

"Threatening Isla’s son in broad daylight? What exactly was your plan there?"

Diane crossed her arms.

"To remind him that actions have consequences."

Gabriel walked toward her, moving his head to the sides.

"And what do you think Isla is going to do now?"

"Whatever she wants. I don’t care."

Gabriel exhaled loudly, shaking his head. "You’re playing a dangerous game."

Diane smirked. "So are you."

There was a long and paused silence between them before Gabriel spoke again, sounding softer this time.

"I need to know that you won’t be reckless."

Diane took a step closer. "I’m calculated, not reckless."

Gabriel watched her face closely, without saying a single word.

Then, he reached for her wrist and pulled her closer.

"You don’t realise how many enemies you have now," he murmured, his hold was stronger but not painful.

"Isla isn’t just some spoiled woman. She’s been planning something for a long time."

Diane lifted her head a little bit. "And you know this because?"

Gabriel’s smirk returned.

"Because I know her better than she knows herself."

Diane searched his face for a moment before exhaling, pulling her wrist free.

"Then tell me what I don’t know."

Gabriel hesitated, then nodded toward the chair. "Sit."

Diane sighed but complied, folding her legs as she watched him.

Gabriel poured himself a drink, swirling the liquid before speaking.

"Isla’s husband, Martin, is falling apart. The business deals he had with my father’s company are crumbling, and he’s scrambling for an out. And guess who he’s been seen with?"

Diane didn’t have to guess. "Rachel."

Gabriel nodded.

"Rachel is using Martin for money, and Isla knows. But instead of being angry at him, she’s angry at you."

Diane smirked. "Of course, she is."

Gabriel leaned forward.

"This isn’t a joke, Diane. Isla is dangerous because she’s reckless."

Diane tapped her nails against the chair’s armrest.

"So what do you suggest?"

"For once, let me handle things."

Diane let out a soft laugh. "And what makes you think I’d do that?"

"Because, darling, I know how much you love a good game. And this time... I’m going to make sure we both win."

Diane held herself, feeling the heat between them shift and move in circles.

Then, with a slow smile, she stood. "Fine. But if you fail, Gabriel..."

Gabriel lifted his chin, waiting.

"I’ll clean up your mess."

With that, she turned and walked out, leaving Gabriel smirking in her wake.

This was far from over.l

Diane barely made it back to her office before she found Riot lounging on her couch, feet up on the coffee table like he owned the place.

"Boss," Riot greeted, smirking. "Miss me?"

Diane rolled her eyes, tossing her coat onto her chair.

"You’re supposed to be taking the day off."

Riot shrugged. "What can I say? I got bored."

She sat down at her desk, rubbing her temples.

"Then go do something useful."

Riot chuckled. "Like spying on Isla?"

"You’ve already been keeping tabs?"

Riot grinned. "You know me. I like to stay ahead of the game."

"And?"

"She’s restless. Martin seems like a mess, Rachel is doing her nonsense, and she knows she’s running out of time." Riot’s smirk faded just a little.

"She’s going to do something soon."

Diane nodded. "Then we need to be ready."

Riot stretched, standing up. "You’re not worried, are you?"

Diane smirked. "Not even a little."

Riot formed a smile. "That’s my boss."

As he walked toward the door, Diane called out.

"Take tomorrow off, too. I have a feeling things are going to get interesting."

Riot winked. "Can’t wait."

As the door closed behind him, Diane exhaled, her fingers drummed against the desk.

Something couldn’t leave her alone, something she thought she forgot.

"What could it be...what could it be...?" A thick flow was travelling through her chest, making her nervous.

She got rid of Richard, well, Gabriel did so. She was keeping an eye on Rachel, Isla and Martin.

"Evelyn and Adrian..." Diane gulped.

These two were the last people she saw before dying. These two were the biggest schemers to ever exist.

She knew they were already together, but didn’t know how much they trusted each other.

When Diane planted that doubt for Richard’s trust towards Adrian, that’s when he became clumsy.

What if I’ll do the same with Adrian? Make him think that Evelyn isn’t a trust-worthy one...’

She looked at her computer, "but how...?"

Diane didn’t want to involve Gabriel and Leon immediately. This one was very personal to her, so personal that she was ready to go to jail if needed.

Wanting to keep them next to her, making them think she was going to fall.

Diane looked at the calendar, -September 7th.-

’The friendly competition?!’
