Chapter 65: A Lesson in Power

Diane drove Arthur to school herself.

It was the first time since the incident with Isla’s son and his friends.

Arthur sat quietly in the backseat, playing with the strap of his backpack, refusing to look at her through the rearview mirror.

Diane sighed. She had expected this.

He was still distant, still unsure of where she stood in his world. But she wasn’t going to let him face these battles alone.

When they arrived at Rosewood Academy, Diane walked him to the entrance, her eyes quickly checked the crowds of students.

And then, she saw Isla’s son.

The boy was with a group of other students, laughing loudly about something as if he hadn’t bullied Arthur for weeks.

The moment Thomas saw her, his laughter died, and his posture stiffened.

"Thomas," Diane greeted smoothly.

Thomas swallowed, shifting himself uncomfortably. "What do you want?"

Diane smiled, but there was nothing kind about it. "You’re Isla’s son, aren’t you?"

Thomas hesitated before lifting his chin proudly. "Yeah. So?"

Diane took a step closer, lowering her voice so only he could hear.

"So, that means you know exactly who I am. And you know that I don’t take kindly to people who hurt my family."

Thomas blinked, his little act turned into dust. "I-I didn’t—"

Diane cut him off, "I know exactly what you did to Arthur. The bullying. The humiliation. And I know that you did it because your mother taught you that you were better than him."

Thomas paled. "That’s not—"

"I don’t care what excuses you come up with," Diane continued.

"But here’s what’s going to happen. You are never going to lay a finger on Arthur again. You are never going to speak his name unless it’s to apologise. And if I hear that you so much as look at him the wrong way, I will personally make sure you regret it."

Thomas opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Diane leaned in just slightly, her voice turned lethal.

"Do you understand me?"

He nodded quickly, his face burned from shame and fear.

"Good boy," Diane said before stepping back.

Just as she turned to leave, she was obviously interrupted.

"Well, well, look who’s here."

Diane didn’t flinch as Isla approached.

"Diane," Isla purred with fake warmth. "What a surprise to see you here."

Diane smirked. "I could say the same. But then again, you always did love showing up where you weren’t wanted."

Isla chuckled, though the tightness around her eyes gave her away.

"Still sharp-tongued, I see. Tell me, how is Gabriel these days? Oh, that’s right—you’re too busy starting fights in schoolyards to know."

Diane’s smile didn’t change. "I don’t start fights, Isla. I finish them."

Isla folded her arms, lifting her head. "And what exactly are you doing threatening my son?"

Diane’s face turned ice-cold. "Oh, I wouldn’t call it a threat. I’d call it a warning."

Isla’s lips curled. "You must feel very powerful now that you have Gabriel wrapped around your little finger."

Diane exhaled dramatically. "Isla, let’s not pretend you actually care about Gabriel. You care about what his power can do for you. That’s why you played the perfect sister for all those years, isn’t it?"

"Careful, Diane. You have no idea what you’re getting into."

Diane laughed. "Oh, Isla. You keep saying that, but every time, you’re the one who loses."

Isla’s nails dug into her palm. "You think you’ve won?"

Diane stepped closer, dropping her voice so low that only ants could hear. "I don’t think so. I know."

Isla’s jaw clenched, but before she could respond, the school bell rang.

Diane took a step back, giving her a polite smile. "I’d love to stay and chat, but unlike you, I actually have important things to do."

As she reached the car, she felt her phone vibrate. She glanced at the screen.

-Gabriel: We need to talk. Now.-

Diane sighed, sliding into the driver’s seat.

Diane arrived at her office, the heavy shoulders from her earlier encounter with Isla still was burning beneath her skin.

She had won that round, but she knew Isla wouldn’t back down so easily. Women like her never did.

Just as she settled into her chair, a knock echoed through the door.

"Come in," Diane called, already knowing who it was.

Riot stepped inside, his usual cocky smirk was in place.

"Boss," he greeted, lazily plopping into the chair across from her.

Diane arched her brow. "You look too relaxed for someone who’s supposed to be working."

Riot grinned, stretching his legs out. "That’s because I know my boss has everything under control."

Diane exhaled, shaking her head... "What do you want, Riot?"

Riot shrugged. "I was in the area. Figured I’d check in, see if you needed me to break anyone’s legs today."

Diane chuckled. "Tempting. But not today."

Riot leaned forward, resting his arms on the desk. "So, how was your little chat with the ice queen?"

Diane’s muscles cooled. "Predictable. She tried to act like she was still in control, but I shut that down."

Riot smirked. "Good. She deserves to be knocked down a peg or ten."

Diane tapped her fingers against the desk, not being able to forget about it. "She’s up to something, though. I can feel it."

"You want me to keep an eye on her?"

Diane considered it, then shook her head. "Not yet. I have a feeling she’s going to come to us first. I’d rather see what move she makes."

Riot nodded, then leaned back in his chair, watching her. "You look tired."

Diane shot him a dry look. "Gee, thanks."

He laughed. "I mean it. You’ve been on edge nonstop lately. Maybe you should take a break."

Diane scoffed. "And do what? Take a spa day? Go on vacation? Riot, my life doesn’t allow breaks."

Riot was watching her for a moment before shaking his head. "You really don’t know how to let go, huh?"

Diane smirked. "Not when there are still things to handle."

Riot sighed dramatically. "Fine, fine. Be a workaholic. But don’t say I didn’t warn you when you burn out."

Diane rolled her eyes. "Noted."

She glanced at the clock, realising how much time had passed. She tapped her fingers against the desk again, thinking.

"You know what?" she said suddenly. "Take the rest of the day off."

Riot blinked in surprise. "Wait, really?"

Diane smirked. "Go. Do whatever it is you do when you’re not being a pain in my ass."

Riot laughed, standing up. "Well, if you insist. But don’t start any wars without me."

"No promises."

As Riot left, Diane leaned back in her chair, staring at her phone.

Gabriel’s message was still unanswered.

She exhaled slowly.

Something told her she wasn’t going to like what he had to say.

"If you pull another stunt..."
