Chapter 110: It’s Set
Too many possibilities to worry about, too many things to be carried on one’s shoulders, however...
No doubt...Diane really loved Gabriel.
The office was too silent, but just ticking off the antique clock on the wall seemed to be loud enough.
Diane sat behind her desk, fingers steepled as she processed Riot’s words.
Henry Vaughn had taken the bait.
That meant the real game was about to begin.
The door swung open, and Gabriel walked in.
Riot followed behind him, dropping into a chair with a smug grin.
Gabriel crossed his arms. "You called?"
Diane leaned back in her chair, nodding toward the file Riot had left on her desk.
"Henry Vaughn has been poking around more aggressively than expected. He’s convinced there’s a missing piece to Rachel’s story."
Gabriel arched a brow. "And does he have anything real?"
Riot smirked. "Not yet. But that’s the fun part."
Gabriel smiled, running his face. "So, what’s the plan or we follow mine?"
Diane tapped her fingers against the desk, considering.
"We let him think he’s on the verge of something big. We give him a carefully curated version of the truth—one that leads him exactly where we want."
Gabriel studied her for longer. "And where do we want him?"
Diane smirked. "Far away from anything actually dangerous to us."
Gabriel nodded. "So we feed him a story."
Riot grinned. "Exactly. A little deception, a little misdirection—he’ll be too busy chasing shadows to realise we’re the ones casting them."
Gabriel glanced at Diane. "And what’s the bait?"
Diane picked up a single document from the file and slid it toward him.
Gabriel scanned the page, his eyes darkened slightly. "A financial trail?"
Diane nodded. "Rachel was hiding money. We know that. But instead of Vaughn finding out where the real money went, we lead him to an offshore account that implicates a ghost—someone already dead or irrelevant."
Riot laughed. "You’re evil. I love it."
Gabriel smirked. "Who’s the ghost?"
Diane leaned forward. "Rachel’s old lawyer."
Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. "The one who disappeared?"
Diane’s lips curled. "The very same."
Riot let out a low whistle. "Damn. That’s cold."
Gabriel nodded slowly. "It’s perfect. Vaughn will spend weeks chasing a man who no longer exists, thinking he’s about to break the story of the decade."
Diane exhaled. "Exactly. And by the time he realises the truth, it won’t matter anymore."
Gabriel was looking at her for a moment longer again, then smirked. "You really are dangerous."
Diane shrugged. "You knew that when you met me."
Riot clapped his hands together. "Alright, now that we’ve set the trap, who’s delivering the bait?"
Diane glanced at Gabriel. "Your contact at the press. We need someone who can leak this information subtly."
Gabriel nodded. "I’ll handle it."
Diane exhaled, the weight of the plan settling over her. "Good. Then we wait."
Later That Night
Diane sat on the balcony, a glass of wine in her hand as she stared at the city skyline. The day had been long, the weight of their actions pressing down on her.
Gabriel stepped outside, hands in his pockets. "Couldn’t sleep?"
Diane shook her head. "Too much to think about."
Gabriel walked over, leaning against the railing beside her. "You did good today."
Diane scoffed. "I manipulated a journalist into chasing a dead end. That doesn’t exactly scream ’good.’"
Gabriel smirked. "It means we’re winning."
Diane sighed, swirling her wine. "It never really ends, does it?"
Gabriel was silent for a moment before he said, "Not in our world."
Diane looked at him, searching his face. "And you’re okay with that?"
Gabriel’s balance was stable enough. "I’m okay with us."
Diane swallowed, the words felt harder in her chest.
For the first time in a long time, she wasn’t sure what scared her more—the fight ahead, or the future he wanted with her.
But tonight, she let herself lean into him.
Just for a moment.
Gabriel was halfway through pouring himself a drink when his phone beeped.
He sighed, already knowing who it was before he even glanced at the screen.
It just had to be Isla...
Of course.
He debated ignoring it, but he knew Isla.
She wasn’t the type to call without a reason—especially after last night’s disaster of a dinner.
With a low grunt, he answered. "Isla."
"Gabriel," she said, her tone was more sharper than usual, with barely restrained irritation. "Have you completely lost your mind?"
Gabriel took a slow sip of his whiskey. "You’re going to have to be more specific."
"Last night. Attacking Father. Making a scene. Do you even realise what you’ve done?"
Gabriel exhaled through his nose. "I protected Diane. That’s what I did."
Isla scoffed. "Protected her? You nearly started a war over her!"
Gabriel’s jaw clenched. "He called her a whore, Isla. And you just sat there and smirked."
Isla’s voice turned cold. "And? She ran her mouth. She disrespected him in his own home. What did you expect?"
Gabriel’s grip on the glass tightened. "I expected better from you."
There was a pause before Isla laughed bitterly. "God, she’s really gotten into your head, hasn’t she?"
Gabriel’s eyes darkened. "Say what you really called for, Isla."
Isla sighed dramatically.
"Gabriel, she’s dragging you into her mess. Ever since she came into your life, it’s been scandal after scandal, problem after problem. You’re losing everything because of her."
Gabriel’s expression didn’t change. "Funny. I don’t feel like I’m losing at all."
Isla’s voice dropped lower. "She’s not worth it."
Gabriel’s grip on his phone tightened, his tone turning lethal. "Be very careful about what you say next."
Isla paused, then let out a frustrated breath. "One day, you’ll see I was right."
Gabriel smirked. "I wouldn’t hold my breath."
And with that, he hung up.
There was no doubt that Isla had bad intentions towards Diane, but Gabriel couldn’t understand exactly why?
Why was everyone so pressed over her existence? He understood that Diane was extremely beautiful and rich, but she wasn’t a threat to Isla or his father.
So why?
