Chapter 109: Dreams of Tomorrow

The morning sunlight spilled across the room in golden waves, stretching lazily over the rumpled sheets.

Diane stirred, blinking against the brightness as warmth enveloped her from behind

Gabriel’s arm was draped over her waist, his bare skin pressed against hers, his breath too stable and slow at the back of her neck.

She breathed out softly, shifting slightly, but his grip tightened.

"Don’t move yet," Gabriel murmured, his voice thick with sleep.

Diane smirked, tilting her head back slightly. "Since when do you sleep in?"

Gabriel sighed, his fingers brushing against her hip. "I don’t. I just don’t want to get up."

Diane turned in his arms, resting her head against his chest. "That’s new."

He chuckled, fingers tangling lazily in her hair. "Maybe I’m getting soft."

Diane scoffed. "Doubtful."

Gabriel smirked, but then his expression softened, his hand stilling as he studied her.

"What?" she asked, raising a brow.

Gabriel was silent for a moment, his thumb grazing her cheek. Then, in a low voice, he said, "I want to have kids with you...I meant it yesterday."

Diane paused her body, ’so he wasn’t talking out of heat...’

She blinked, processing, trying to grasp those words.

Gabriel wasn’t joking.

His eyes were steady, his voice filled with something raw, something deep.

Diane swallowed. "Gabriel—"

"I mean it," he cut in before she could dismiss it. "I think about it all the time. Waking up like this, but with little feet running down the hall. A home. A family."

Diane opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

He continued, his voice softer now. "I never thought I’d want something like that. Not before you."

Diane’s heart pounded. She sat up slightly, watching him. "We’re not exactly in the best position for that right now."

Gabriel smirked. "Since when do we wait for the perfect moment for anything?"

Diane let out a short laugh. "You’re impossible."

His fingers traced over her wrist. "Say yes."

Diane’s brows furrowed. "To what?"

Gabriel’s smirk deepened. "To the idea of it. Of us—building something real. Something permanent."

Diane exhaled, her heart twisting. "It’s not that simple, Gabriel."

His expression remained steady. "It could be."

She shook her head, rubbing her temples. "You want kids with me now, but what happens when things go south? What if we can’t protect them? We still have enemies—"

Gabriel reached out, gripping her chin gently, making her look at him. "We’ll protect them. Like we protect each other."

Diane swallowed hard. His certainty, his confidence—it was overwhelming.

She wanted to believe him.

God, she wanted that future.

Gabriel exhaled, running a hand through his shoulder.

"Look, I know this isn’t something we can just snap our fingers and make happen overnight. But I want you to know—I see it. I want it. And when the time is right, I’m not going to hesitate."

Diane stared at him, her chest tightening. "Gabriel—"

His hand cupped the back of her neck, his lips brushing against her forehead.

"I’m patient, Diane. But not forever."

Diane let out a slow, unstable breath, leaning into his touch.

For the first time in a long time, the future didn’t seem so far away.

And that terrified her.

Later That Day

Diane sat at her desk, absently scrolling through reports. The world outside continued moving, threats still lingering, but her mind was stuck on him.

Gabriel. His words. The weight of them.

I want to have kids with you.

It should’ve scared her more than it did.

Instead, it had left something warm in her chest, something she wasn’t sure how to handle.

Her thoughts were interrupted when Riot barged into the office, tossing a file onto her desk.

"Got something for you, boss," he said, plopping into the chair across from her.

Diane arched a brow. "You don’t have to throw things at me to get my attention."

Riot smirked. "I disagree."

Diane sighed, picking up the file. "What is this?"

Riot stretched his arms over his head. "Our journalist friend. Henry Vaughn."

Diane straightened. "He took the bait?"

Riot grinned. "Oh, he swallowed it. He’s been sniffing around all day, looking for the missing piece of Rachel’s story."

Diane flipped through the pages, scanning the details Riot had collected. "And does he have anything real?"

"Not yet," Riot said, leaning forward. "But that’s the fun part. He thinks he’s about to uncover something huge. Which means we’re in the perfect position to feed him exactly what we want."

Diane smirked. "You love this, don’t you?"

Riot grinned. "I live for this."

Diane let out a long chuckle, already working through the next steps.

"We need to make sure he keeps following our trail. But we also need to be careful. If he catches on that we’re manipulating him—"

"He won’t," Riot interrupted. "He’s too eager. He wants to be the guy who breaks the story, the one who uncovers the truth about Rachel and all the skeletons she left behind."

Diane nodded slowly. "Then we give him a truth. One that benefits us."

Riot leaned back, his smirk widening. "Now that’s the Diane I know."

Diane rolled her eyes, tossing the file back onto the desk. "Get Gabriel in here. We need to plan our next move."

Riot saluted. "On it."

As he left, Diane exhaled, rubbing her temples.

One thing at a time.

First, handle Vaughn.

Then, maybe—just maybe—figure out what Gabriel’s words really meant to her.

For now, she had a game to win.

But then, imagining herself with a baby in her arms...there was something that made her feel giggly.

Little Diane or Gabriel, running around in circles, playing with Arthur...

She wanted this life...she wanted to have a peaceful family with nothing to worry about...

Diane didn’t want to be involved with criminals, owe pleasantries to people, owe debts...her whole dream was to leave this evil life behind and do better in this one.

And if Gabriel was here, supporting her, helping her...then maybe...maybe she will be happy with a child?

His child...
