Chapter 664: 467 Seven-Step Snake

They were called police officers, but in fact, they were plainclothes.

Due to limited resources, the town’s police station wasn’t very strict about the conditions under which officers dispatched— simply attach an identifier to their shoulders, mount the station’s motorcycle, and off they went.

Three officers had arrived, none of whom had dealt with any major cases before; they usually just helped handle the frequent disputes between neighbors from the surrounding villages and occasionally investigated minor thefts.

"What happened here?" Chief Tong looked around the yard, somewhat puzzled.

It wasn’t as if a life-threatening situation had occurred here; it didn’t seem like that at all, seeing how contentedly the mother and her two daughters were eating, utterly unconcerned.

Looking at the others, though, the scene was indeed quite hard to watch.

So, who exactly was the victim here, and who had injured these people? It surely couldn’t have been the three females overpowering several grown men.

Chief Tong glanced at Xiaofeng’s stature and then at the other men’s builds, finding it hard to believe a woman could overpower four men.

Perhaps the villagers had intervened.

These villagers, used to physical labor, were not lightly strong when it came to fighting.

Uncle Dog glanced at Xiaofeng, "Miss, this is Chief Tong from our town. Would you explain to Chief Tong what happened here?"

Having swallowed a sweet potato, Xiaofeng felt warmed up, and her demeanor softened, "Hello, Chief Tong. I am Su Xiaofeng. I was returning to the city from the countryside with my children when we were intercepted by kidnappers halfway. They brought us here, claiming they wanted to sell me."

Xiaofeng pointed to Zhao Hu, who was continuously moaning on the ground.

Zhao Hu was not unfamiliar to Chief Tong; whenever he had conflicts with the villagers, the villagers frequently sought Chief Tong’s intervention, but as Zhao Hu had mental issues, Chief Tong could only reprimand and educate him, without many other options available.

"Chief Tong, they brought the people here; it has nothing to do with me. If they bring people here and I don’t take them, wouldn’t it be a waste, don’t you think? If you’re going to arrest anyone, arrest them; it’s not my problem," Zhao Hu said.

Listening to their words, Chief Tong thought, what a mess this all was.

He approached the three men, "I am the chief of the town’s police station. Who are you guys?"

The trio glanced at Chief Tong but said nothing.

"Hey, I’m talking to you. Have you gone mute?" Uncle Dog raised his voice upon seeing they weren’t responding.

"Don’t waste your effort; we aren’t speaking. Besides, a small town chief like you doesn’t have the authority to interrogate us," the driver scoffed, clearly believing that a minor town chief couldn’t possibly control them.

"Oh really?" Uncle Dog was amused. "From the tone of your voice, are you some high-ranking official then? Nope, that can’t be right. If you were high-ranking officials, you wouldn’t stoop to engaging in robbery."

The driver and the other two men sat together, silent thereafter.

Chief Tong looked at the three men and then at Xiaofeng, asking, "Do you know them?"

Xiaofeng shook her head, "No."

Zhao Youqian ran up breathlessly and, upon seeing Xiaofeng and her two daughters were indeed there, showed a mix of urgency and joy on his face, "Young Madam, are you really here?"

He had just received a call saying the Young Madam hadn’t returned home yet and was told to look nearby when he actually found them here.

Xiaofeng looked at him, "What are you doing here?" Zhao Youqian was from Upper Shihe Village, where she had been earlier that day.

"Young Madam, this is Lower Shihe Village, just a few paddy fields away from our village. Young Madam, I thought you had already gone back? When you came, you had a driver and bodyguards; how could something happen to you here?"

"We were plotted against, and ended up on the kidnappers’ vehicle that brought us here."

"Isn’t that Youqian?" Uncle Dog, recognizing Youqian from the nearby village, said, "Do you know this young girl?"

"Uncle Dog, she is my boss. She even visited our village this afternoon." Youqian, at a loss for words, added, "Right, Uncle Dog, if you would watch here, I need to make a phone call back in the village."

Watching Zhao Youqian run off swiftly, Uncle Dog said, "..."

Wasn’t she his boss? Just a greeting and then he ran off, this kid.

"I’m telling you, let us go, or I’ll make it difficult for everyone here." Chief Tong was about to ask something more when the driver pulled out a sharp dagger from between his legs, "I don’t care who you are, but let it be known, you better keep tonight’s incident quiet, or it won’t be good for any of you."

This situation had gone out of his control due to underestimation; otherwise, Su Xiaofeng wouldn’t have escaped.
