Chapter 1006: Chapter 1006: Friendship Between Women

Martin Jonah received instructions to contact people and find the hotel video from the time the incident happened, while also arranging for the company’s PR department to be prepared to handle the situation.

After hanging up the phone, David Locke sighed lightly and walked outside. Although today’s events were sudden, they were not unexpected.

Ever since he had dealt with Arthur Cook last time, things had been unsettled, wave after wave. David Locke knew the opposing forces behind were not simple, and he thought about it but still felt uneasy, so he dialed Adam Piers while walking.

Adam Piers had lost his temper after seeing the reporters’ coverage of his romance with Zoe Thatcher earlier that morning. After venting, he wanted to explain to Bertha Swift, but when he arrived downstairs at Bertha Swift’s place and saw David Locke’s people coming to pick her up, the woman who usually kept a cold face towards him appeared gentle and soft in front of others, even looking healthier than when he saw her yesterday.

This Bertha Swift showed no signs of being affected by his scandal?

Recalling Bertha Swift’s attitude before abruptly hanging up the phone yesterday, Adam Piers, who had originally extended a leg out of the car, withdrew it again.

Next to him, Ray Leighton was still on the phone inquiring about the media’s reasons. After a while, seeing Master Adam not moving, he looked over curiously, "Master Adam, the media said they saw the scandal between you and Miss Thatcher yesterday and thought it was fine to publish it."

Adam Piers was still staring out the window, and upon hearing Ray Leighton’s words, he listlessly responded with an "oh" sound.

Ray Leighton didn’t know what Adam Piers meant for a moment, tilted his head to follow Adam Piers’ gaze but saw nothing, feeling puzzled, "Master Adam, the weather in February is still a bit cold, should we head back to the hospital first?"

Adam Piers replied with a "hmm" but didn’t move.

The two of them stayed there with the car door open in the cold wind for more than half an hour before Adam Piers finally got into the car.

As the car started, Ray Leighton had to muster the courage to ask Adam Piers how to handle the scandal. Surprisingly, the previously furious person was now dispirited, saying, "Let’s just leave it at that."

Ray Leighton was puzzled, what’s "leaving it at that"?

He couldn’t help but ask his doubt, only to meet a cold stare from Adam Piers.

Ray Leighton instantly understood and called back the PR company that had been trying to delete the posts and articles on the trending list.

Although the news was left alone, Adam Piers’ agitated mood upon returning to the hospital intimidated Ray Leighton and the whole floor’s nurses into working nervously. This state persisted until David Locke’s call came in.

Adam Piers was aware that David Locke was attending a script meeting today. He had originally planned to go, but considering his presence might provoke Bertha Swift, causing her stubborn streak to kick in and possibly quitting the film, his previous efforts would have been in vain.

So, holding back the impulse, Adam Piers asked David Locke to find someone to replace him. Yet, he never expected David Locke to call him at this time. His first thought was of Bertha Swift and answered almost without thinking.

"There was an unusual incident at the script meeting here. I told you someone wanted to deal with me before. I’m afraid it won’t be simple. Mary is mad at me..."

"She’s mad at you, why are you calling me?" Adam Piers thought David Locke’s call was about Bertha Swift, but instead, he began by mentioning an incident at the script meeting and then talked about Mary Scott being mad at him, immediately interrupting impatiently.

David Locke was already familiar with this master’s temper, wasn’t annoyed, and continued, "Mary and Miss Swift hit it off at first sight and planned to go shopping together."

Hearing this, Adam Piers suddenly sat up straight, "You know you stirred up trouble, and Mary Scott might be targeted too. You actually let her take Bertha Swift shopping?"

"Women’s friendships come mysteriously, I have no say." David Locke felt he was wrongly accused.

Adam Piers took a deep breath, thinking about Bertha Swift’s injuries. Yesterday, after Bertha Swift left, he had someone investigate the Lewis family’s situation and also gave Oswald Lewis a bit of a punishment.

But Oswald Lewis was easy to deal with, and who David Locke provoked wasn’t some small fry like Oswald Lewis. He took a deep breath, "Where are they now? I’ll send someone to follow them."

"I’ll send you the location later. I’ve had people following, but you know my people, no matter how skilled, can’t intimidate those behind. So this time, I do need Master Adam’s help." David Locke was straightforward.

"Is this the first time you’ve bothered me?" Adam Piers replied in a slovenly manner.

David Locke chuckled, "Since Master Adam put it that way, I won’t be polite. I also need to inform you in advance, the filming of ’The Doctors’ may not go smoothly. Be prepared to lose money."

Adam Piers, "..."

Darn it! Who the hell invests in films to lose money?

Adam Piers was stunned by David Locke’s daring move. Before he could respond, David Locke leisurely added, "Anyway, you didn’t invest in my film to make money, don’t worry, I’ll do my best to create opportunities for you and Miss Swift to interact."

Adam Piers, who was already ready to curse, forced the words back down, but his tone was still unpleasant, "Do you think our opportunity needs you to create? If this film costs me money, you’d better not mix in the film industry anymore, just go begging!"

David Locke, "..."

"I’m just saying, but if I continue to be exposed to scandals, by then ’The Geisha’ will be blocked and ’The Doctors’ implicated too. So I do need your help this time." David Locke paused, knowing he couldn’t afford to offend this person, speaking in a pleasant tone.

"Your dirt?" Adam Piers asked, suddenly recalling David Locke’s previous antics, taking a deep breath, "Causing trouble with your antics, now things are happening?"

David Locke rarely didn’t retort, "Will you help or not?"

"If I don’t help, isn’t my money wasted? That was advance dividends, and I even threw in my future freedom. If you dare let me lose money, I’ll fight you." Adam Piers said unhappily, speaking fiercely.

David Locke, hearing this, touched his nose, "I previously heard that Master Adam was particularly generous, even giving away a billion-dollar diamond. What’s the change now...ah, people aren’t what they used to be."

Adam Piers was most annoyed by the diamond con before, unceremoniously cursed "get out," and then arranged for someone to follow Bertha Swift and Mary Scott.

After doing these things, thinking it over, he turned to Ray Leighton, "Go check who exactly Locke’s guy has offended."

Previously, hearing that ’The Geisha’ was being blocked and ’The Doctors’ which was withdrawn funding, Adam Piers didn’t take it to heart, thinking as long as he invested, the opponent wouldn’t disregard his influence even if they ignored others. But now a script meeting of ’The Doctors’ turned problematic, it seemed the forces behind were not simple, even intimidating the Piers.

Or maybe the opponent simply disregards him!

Ray Leighton nodded and arranged it.

Yet even so, Adam Piers was still in a bad mood. Since when did that woman hit it off with others? What could be so special about two women hitting it off? If she could have hit it off with him in the first place, they wouldn’t have ended up where they are now.

The more Adam Piers thought, the more frustrated he became. After Ray Leighton arranged things, he couldn’t help but ask, "What is Bertha Swift doing?"

Ray Leighton, feeling overwhelmed like an ox, thought he wasn’t living like a human now. Clearly, he was only supposed to be a life assistant, but why did it seem like he had to be all-capable now.

He had to take care of the young master’s daily life, help arrange various things, and now even had to report what Miss Swift was doing...

"Having dinner with Lady Locke at Impression City," Ray Leighton quickly replied after his Tsukkomi finished.

Adam Piers sat there for a while after hearing it, suddenly asked, "What are they eating?"

Ray Leighton was stunned, "I’ll ask over there?"

"Forget it, never mind." Adam Piers replied, but after responding, he thought of something, "Haven’t I had dinner?"

Ray Leighton was completely baffled, hadn’t he eaten?

"Take me to eat." Adam Piers said and then got up to change clothes.

Ray Leighton looked at Adam Piers without any mental preparation.

Adam Piers impatiently glanced at him, "What are you staring at? Call the driver!"

"Okay, Master Adam." Ray Leighton was really resigned to this man. Did he even know he was staying in a hospital?

...

Impression City.

Mary Scott wore a fisherman’s hat, a very ordinary pink fleece jacket paired with light-colored jeans and white dad sneakers, exuding a sweet charm, like a summer peach that draws people close.

Bertha Swift? Different from Bertha Swift’s sweet style, she wore a brown thin wool coat, a black underlay, knee-high boots, with her long wavy hair draped over her shoulders, paired with her stunningly beautiful face, demanding one’s gaze at first sight.

The two had similar heights but distinctly different auras. Each had its unique beauty, drawing significant attention even with their faces partly obscured by hats.

Mary Scott felt quite guilty for pulling Bertha Swift over to shield her, insisting on treating Bertha Swift to dinner.

Bertha Swift, knowing Mary Scott was feeling upset and following David Locke’s advice, though not accustomed to mingling with others, agreed.

However, after brief contact, Bertha Swift found she didn’t dislike Mary Scott.

Since her incident, anyone in the industry who knew or heard about her looked at her with scrutiny or inquiry, whether gossiping, mocking, sympathizing, or reveling in her misfortune—none of which Bertha Swift liked.

She was used to pride, knowing Mary Scott was David Locke’s wife, who must surely also know her. Yet whether in a script meeting or later at a private restaurant, Mary Scott’s attitude towards her was very normal, even astonished by her beauty with no trace of discrimination or jealousy.

For Bertha Swift, this was extremely rare.

And exceedingly rare in the entertainment industry.

Though Bertha Swift had just started in the entertainment industry, as a notable heiress in Swallow City, she’d seen many female celebrities, competing fiercely at events, scheming just short of a harem drama.

And in this circle, the more beautiful one is, the more likely they face jealousy.

Bertha Swift believed she had prepared to handle it but unexpectedly first met Mary Scott, a celebrity completely different from her impression.

"Do you have something in mind to eat? How about porridge?" Mary Scott, unaware of Bertha Swift’s thoughts, noticed Bertha Swift’s poor complexion since meeting and though asking, offered a suggestion first.

Bertha Swift hadn’t fully recovered after a miscarriage, and hadn’t been eating well for over a month, further threatened and frightened by Oswald Lewis, and tense from interactions with Adam Piers, her stomach increasingly fragile, unable to consume stimulating food. Yet since it was Mary’s treat, and feeling shy to express this openly, hurriedly agreed upon hearing Mary’s suggestion.

Mary Scott saw Bertha Swift’s subtle relief, raising her brows, originally thinking someone like Bertha Swift would be very selective. Didn’t expect her to be so easygoing, and seeming easy to nurture, easing the vexation from David Locke’s matters significantly.

The two found a well-rated and recognized porridge shop to dine in.

As it wasn’t dinner time yet, there weren’t many people. They deliberately picked an inconspicuous corner to sit.

After ordering, Mary Scott couldn’t resist expressing gratitude, "Thank you so much for today. Otherwise, I wouldn’t know how to shake off that dog-man."

"Things aren’t settled yet, maybe hear Director Locke’s explanations." Bertha’s words weren’t particularly siding with David Locke but noted the vulgar woman’s deliberate attitude guiding others to misunderstand him, plus today’s script meeting had absolute confidentiality with a private venue. Yet, that woman not only found her way there but also bypassed the private restaurant staff knocking directly at the box door—there were too many doubts.

Mary Scott nodded, looking defeated, "I thought about that after, but I’m still annoyed. You’ve not been in the circle; perhaps you haven’t heard his stories. Anyway, it’s quite distressing. Although it’s over, I’m still resentful."

"But Director Locke said they were just playing mahjong?" Bertha Swift was not good at comforting people, tried to say.

Mary Scott couldn’t hold back, suddenly giggled, "Do you believe that explanation?"

Bertha Swift shook her head, she didn’t believe it. She was just trying to comfort!

"I believe after meeting me, he hasn’t been involved with other women but don’t dare to believe during our separation he’s never had anything with them." Mary Scott sighed lightly, their breakup was for too long and quite unpleasant, she dared not expect him to keep himself for her, which was unreasonable, unrealistic, and against human nature.

Bertha Swift nodded, with such temptations in the entertainment world and David Locke bearing the name of a genius director, a lack of romantic scandals would be unusual.

Yet, as a lover or even wife, it’s bothersome.

Such as her relationship with Adam Piers.

Thinking of Adam Piers, Bertha Swift’s expression darkened. Yesterday, his phone call likely showed he knew about her trip to West Mountain. She couldn’t figure out why he called, wanting to be with her, yet Bertha Swift knew the issues between them were numerous—the lost child, mutual distrust, his infidelity...

And his recent humiliation toward her, all turned into insurmountable barriers between them.

Her once fluttering heart might as well be fed to dogs!

"Bertha, Bertha..."

"Huh?" Mary Scott saw Bertha Swift suddenly zoning out in front of her, worriedly calling out several times. Bertha replied lightly, realizing she had been lost in thought about Adam Piers and apologetically looked at Mary, "Sorry, I was just pondering something."

"It’s okay. May I call you Bertha?" Mary Scott noticed the flash of pain in Bertha’s eyes, quickly changing the subject.

Bertha Swift nodded gently.

Mary Scott joyfully, "Then you call me Mary?"

"Okay." Bertha Swift readily agreed.

Mary Scott immediately smiled brilliantly, just as the server brought their beef porridge, both chatted while eating. Unexpectedly, someone suddenly called out, "Mary Scott? Is it Mary Scott?"

Halfway through eating, the two tightened up, inwardly exclaiming, "Oh no!"
