Chapter 531 - 533 The Death of Ah Lan
Chapter 531: Chapter 533 The Death of Ah Lan
"Why the hurry to leave, Your Highness?" Ah Lan blocked his way.
Pei Huaian frowned at her and demanded, "Step aside!"
Ah Lan wrapped her arms around his neck, standing on tiptoes and leaning towards his thin lips.
She had deliberately worn a bright and splendid dress today, her long hair draped over her shoulders, accentuating her charm.
Disgusted, Pei Huaian pushed her away and said sternly, "Please respect yourself."
"Why must Your Highness reject someone from a thousand miles away?" Ah Lan persisted, "Don’t you like me?"
Pei Huaian snorted coldly, "What makes you think I like you?"
Ah Lan’s face turned deathly pale as she trembled, "But you have clearly shown me care, I know you have Sister Shao in your heart, but I won’t compete for anything. I am content to just be by your side."
Pei Huaian rubbed his temples, he truly detested Ah Lan, but it wasn’t the time to expose her true face yet.
At that moment, melodious tunes of the zither wafted through the air. Pei Huaian looked up and saw a beautiful young girl playing the zither in the pavilion.
Her figure was elegant and slender, dressed in a long purple gown, with a gold-threaded Soft Yarn Luo hanging from her waist, her dark and glossy hair fashioned into a Flowing Cloud Hairbun.
Her features were exquisitely stunning, her skin creamy and delicate, seemingly breakable with a touch.
A radiant aura seemed to envelop her, dazzling and capturing the attention of all, making it impossible for him to look away.
The music abruptly stopped, and she ceased playing, walking slowly towards him.
Every move she made carried an ethereal grace, captivating the heart.
Pei Huaian was enchanted, his breathing slowed down a beat.
"Congratulations, Crown Prince, the piece I just played was a gift for you," Shao He said with a curtsy and a reserved smile.
Pei Huaian snapped out of it and hurried forward to help her up.
"The piece I played is called ’Drinking Alone Under the Moon,’ do you like it?" she asked with a slight smile, sipping her red lips.
"I like it, as long as it’s a piece you play," Pei Huaian praised.
His heart skipped a beat at her words, staring at her in a daze.
Shao He’s cheeks flushed, perhaps out of shyness or maybe from the wine, making her appear irresistibly alluring.
Pei Huaian’s throat felt dry; he swallowed, trying to suppress the turmoil inside him, and coughed softly, "Why aren’t you at the banquet, but came here instead?"
"I wanted to surprise you, Your Highness, but it seems you had a bigger surprise for me."
Shao He’s gaze fell on Ah Lan, dressed in thin gauze, and she couldn’t help but think: Isn’t that woman cold?
Biting her lip, Ah Lan stepped forward, "Sister Shao, I don’t wish to compete with you for anything. I only hope to serve the Crown Prince and hope for your blessing."
Pei Huaian’s lips tightened, his gaze dark and penetrating as he stared at her, and after a long moment, he said tersely, "Step away."
"I will not leave," Ah Lan stubbornly insisted.
"Get out!"
Pei Huaian roared, his whole body radiating an intense chill.
"I won’t." Ah Lan said defiantly, tears welling up in her beautiful eyes, looking pitifully wronged.
Pei Huaian, tired of arguing, stepped forward and grabbed her by the neck, his tone cold, "Do not force me to kill you."
"Then kill me," Ah Lan said miserably, tears streaming down her face, her expression one of despair.
Pei Huaian paused for a moment as a pair of slender hands touched his hand.
"She isn’t worth dirtying your hands for."
Pei Huaian glanced at the person smiling at the corner of their lips and felt his irritable emotions begin to stabilize; he slowly released his grip.
Ah Lan, gasping for fresh air, breathed heavily, truly feeling that Pei Huaian had meant to kill her just a moment ago.
"Let’s go," Pei Huaian said, wrapping his arm around Shao He and turning to leave.
Just as Ah Lan was about to follow them, someone suddenly grabbed her and pulled her behind a rockery. Before she could react, a dagger was plunged fiercely into her abdomen.
Ah Lan pulled away the black cloth masking the man’s face, her trembling hand pointing at him.
"Why, you, why?"
The man released his hands and quickly left.
"Help, help me,"
Ah Lan weakly supported herself against the rockery, painstakingly moving toward the outside.
As her vision of the receding figures blurred, her body could no longer support her and she collapsed.
Pei Huaian and Shao He returned to the secluded hall, and soon a eunuch rushed in to report. Eunuch Li, after hearing his words, his face turned pale.
He immediately approached the Emperor, whispering a few words to him.
"What!" The Emperor exclaimed in rage after hearing the news, slamming his hand on the table.
The ministers who had been happily chatting fell silent, and the secluded hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
"Someone dared to commit murder within the imperial palace, truly audacious!" The Emperor, furiously outraged, immediately demanded to know who the deceased was.
After all, today was the Crown Prince’s investiture ceremony, and many ministers’ families had also come to the imperial palace,
Eunuch Li, bringing the body to the secluded hall, Pei Jingyi exclaimed, "This—isn’t this Ah Lan? How could she, how could this..."
His gaze shifted to Pei Huaian, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes.
Pei Huaian’s face remained expressionless as if he did not recognize the deceased.
On the other hand, Shao He, seeing the dead Ah Lan, furrowed her brows, disappointed that the drama had ended so abruptly.
"Who is Ah Lan?" the Emperor asked.
Pei Jingyi glanced at Pei Huaian, hesitating as if there were words he held back, adding suspicion in the minds of those present.
