Chapter 527: Chapter 529: Not What You Think
Shao He, who was eavesdropping outside the door, hurriedly hid away; the sharp dagger grazed past her ear.
Father Jiang hastened to push the door and went outside, but there was no one to be seen.
He returned to the room, shook his head at Xia Zhaoshun, and the two men left, one after the other.
Shao He hid in the neighboring room, patting her chest and exhaling a long breath of relief.
It was a close call, she thought; otherwise, I would have been discovered.
Just as she looked up, she saw a woman staring at her. She hurriedly explained, "Sorry, I went into the wrong room, please continue."
Just as she was about to leave, a familiar voice suddenly came from behind her.
"Which room were you actually trying to go to?"
Shao He paused mid-step, and, hardly daring to believe it, turned around and stepped toward the table; her face turned icy cold as she looked at the person holding a folded fan.
"Pei Huaian? What are you doing here?" she said.
As she spoke, she lifted her eyes to the woman by his side, dressed in light gauze, her enchanting figure pressing close to Pei Huaian.
The woman, feeling the oppressive air emanating from Shao He, unconsciously stepped back.
Unfortunately, she didn’t remain steady and almost fell to the ground.
Luckily, Pei Huaian caught her and, with a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, asked, "Are you alright?"
With a shy low head, the woman said, "I’m fine... I just didn’t pay attention, thank you, Fifth Prince."
Witnessing this scene, Shao He felt a surge of complex emotions. She gritted her teeth, "So this is the type you like! Hah!"
Pei Huaian raised an eyebrow slightly and spoke in a mild tone, "She is a good girl."
A good girl!
Ha!
Shao He couldn’t help but scoff; she couldn’t believe he had the gall to say that!
Without uttering another word, she turned around to leave but was stopped by the woman.
"Miss, don’t misunderstand, the Fifth Prince and I are not what you think," the woman said, grasping her arm and trying to explain.
Her big eyes fluttered and blinked, seeming pitiful and hard to ignore.
"What business is it of mine whatever is between you two?"
A raging fire ignited within Shao He, and she suddenly shook off the woman’s hand.
Her strength was formidable, and the woman, caught off-guard, tumbled awkwardly to the floor.
Pei Huaian swiftly caught her and scolded, "Shao He! What are you doing?"
Shao He hadn’t intended to do anything to the woman; she was simply furious that Pei Huaian could do such a thing.
"I, I... Wuu wuu... Fifth Prince, does she not like me?" the woman sobbed, covering her mouth as her eyes reddened instantly.
Ignoring them, Shao He flung open the door and ran out.
As Shao He’s figure disappeared from his sight, Pei Huaian immediately put on a stern face, "Shao He’s temper has always been like this, please be more understanding."
Ah Lan, frightened and shrinking into herself, kept sobbing, "It’s okay, it’s my fault, I’m the one to blame; it’s all my fault."
Ah Lan was so scared that she trembled all over, rambling like a madwoman.
Pei Huaian was about to go after her but paused, softly comforting Ah Lan.
Suddenly, Ah Lan threw herself into his arms, crying, "It wasn’t that I left without saying goodbye back then; I just didn’t want you to be criticized."
"All these years, I’ve been watching over you from the shadows, when I learned that your legs were disabled. I’ve been searching for doctors and medicine in hopes of curing you."
"I’ve never forgotten you, Brother An."
These emotional words did not move Pei Huaian; he pushed the person in his arms away with an indifferent face.
"Whatever the past was, I now have someone I like. I hope you can also let go of the past and live well," he said.
Ah Lan looked at him with disbelief, as if she couldn’t believe he had forgotten her.
Without another word, Pei Huaian turned and left the room.
Shao He wandered the streets aimlessly, tears streaming down her face.
She didn’t realize how long she had been walking until her stomach started growling with hunger, reminding her to eat.
She touched her rumbling stomach, sighed and said, "Well, I’d better find someplace to fill up before anything else."
As she spoke, she sat down at a wonton vendor’s stall.
The shop owner, a woman in her fifties, saw Shao He’s swollen red eyes and worried expression and inquired with concern, "Miss, have you encountered some difficulty? Can I help you?"
With a bitter tug at her lips, Shao He replied, "Thank you, ma’am, just a bowl of wontons, please."
The understanding shop owner smiled and said, "Since it is inconvenient for the young lady to speak of her troubles, this old woman will not pry any further. I’ll cook the wontons for you right away."
"Thank you."
Soon, a hot bowl of wontons was served.
Shao He picked up the bowl, tasted the soup, and found the flavor delicious; it suited her palette well.
A few customers, having finished their meal, left the wonton stall. Eyeing the remaining wontons in her bowl, Shao He hesitated but couldn’t bear to waste them, and thus began to eat slowly.
She ate quickly, but not in a rude manner.
Within less than half a moment, she had finished every wonton in the bowl.
"Ma’am, the check please!" Shao He wiped her mouth and paid the money.
Gathering her emotions, she headed towards Anji Hall. As she turned into the alley, she bumped into a wall of muscle.
"Ah, sorry!" Shao He said, flustered, rubbing her nose, only to be grabbed by the wrist.
She looked up in a daze and saw the person before her was Pei Huaian.
She blinked, her delicate eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
Why was he holding her hand?
She struggled several times without success, which left her somewhat frustrated.
"Let go of me," she demanded, not in the best of moods.
