Chapter 523: Chapter 525 Rumors Stop with the Wise

I never expected this maid to look so frail and gentle, but she actually had quite a fierce temper.

"Humph, everyone knows that your mistress climbed her way up to the Fifth Prince using that pretty face of hers." The woman glared at Qingxia without any fear.

"Yes, your mistress indeed has impressive medical skills, but sadly she used them just to seduce the Fifth Prince and had a child out of wedlock. She’s truly shameless."

"Exactly, she married into the Marquis Pingnan’s Mansion and still couldn’t remain modest, having a child with the Fifth Prince. Wasn’t it all just to secure a future of wealth and prestige through her son?"

One after another, these people were just envious of Shao He, ignoring how much hardship she had gone through.

Qingxia was so angry that her chest heaved violently, and she was about to confront them when Shao He stopped her.

"Qingxia, let’s go," said Shao He indifferently. She glanced at the crowd and headed toward the operating room.

Qingxia stomped her foot in anger but had to follow her mistress’s command and eventually went to the operating room.

The old master never expected things to turn out this way and was filled with immense guilt.

"Doctor Shao, I am sorry, it’s all my fault."

Shao He smiled and shook her head, "Old Master, you needn’t blame yourself. This matter has nothing to do with you."

As she spoke, she instructed Qingxia to help the old master lie down and began to examine his brain.

After the examination, Shao He determined that the old master suffered from a cerebral infarction. Fortunately, it wasn’t severe, and as long as he took medication and underwent acupuncture treatment, there should be no major issues.

The old master was extremely grateful. He took the prescription and left, leaving behind a few pieces of his meager savings in silver as he departed.

Since returning to the Capital City, Pei Huaian had been busy with the Crown Prince’s investiture happening in three days.

"Miss, have you heard about the rumors spreading all over the Capital City these past few days?" Qing Shan asked, frowning.

Without stopping her teasing of Xiao Linzhang, Shao He replied with a smile, "The rumors about me being superficial and greedy, lacking medical ethics? Or how I aggressively bully the poor without any compassion?"

Qingxia nodded. "These people are really going too far."

Shao He gave a cold smile, "Don’t bother with what others say."

Qingxia’s eyes widened in surprise, "Miss, aren’t you even a bit angry?"

"Rumors stop with the wise; we can’t control what comes out of other people’s mouths," Shao He said, raising an eyebrow.

Qingxia shook her head, indicating her confusion, "So, what you mean is..."

"Eventually, the rumors will dissipate. Nowadays, the more we try to explain, the less people believe it. It’s better to wait silently," Qing Shan said.

"Miss makes a good point," Qingxia suddenly understood.

In the outskirts of the Capital City, within a secluded and elegant residence, Xia Zhaoshun sat under the shade of a tree, wearing a dark brocaded robe and a gentle smile while sipping tea. Across from him sat Pei Jingyi.

"Brother Xia, what should we do now? Pei Huaian is about to ascend to the position of Crown Prince," Pei Jingyi expressed his urgency.

Xia Zhaoshun set down his teacup, his tone stable, "Fourth Prince needn’t rush. So what if he becomes Crown Prince? As long as he isn’t on the throne, you still have a chance."

"Instead of worrying about Pei Huaian here, you should think about how to persuade the Second Prince to hand over his military power and influence to you."

Pei Jingyi looked puzzled, "Aren’t you worried?"

"Worried about what? The Emperor has decreed that unless evidence can be found against Pei Huaian, his position as Crown Prince is certain," said Xia Zhaoshun, his eyes narrowing into a shallow smile.

Pei Jingyi’s hand on the table clenched into a fist unwillingly. The thought of having to bow to Pei Huaian in the future filled him with resentment.

"You need to be patient, or you’ll fail at the last hurdle," Xia Zhaoshun warned, sipping his tea and giving him a glance.

Pei Jingyi took a deep breath to suppress his anger and nodded slightly, "What Brother Xia said is very true."

"Fourth Prince, you don’t need to worry. Together, we will one day surpass him," Xia Zhaoshun said, his lips curving into a shallow smile.

Pei Jingyi also showed a warm smile, his clenched fist slowly relaxing before finally releasing.

"Brother Xia is right. I believe you will do your utmost to assist me," he said.

Xia Zhaoshun smiled faintly, stood up, and patted his clothes ready to take his leave. Pei Jingyi quickly stood as well.

"Let me see you out, Brother Xia!"

"No need. Spend your time thinking about how to persuade the Second Prince instead. It will be beneficial to us in every way," Xia Zhaoshun refused and took the lead to leave.

Pei Jingyi took a deep breath to calm his inner turmoil and slowly sat back down.

Inside the Second Prince’s Mansion, Pei Chengye drank from a flask, his eyes hazy as he stared at the maid before him. He staggered to his feet and walked towards her.

The maid was a bit nervous watching him approach. Her fingers fidgeted in front of her, and she bit her lower lip, bowing slightly, "Second Prince."

Pei Chengye cracked a smile, holding the flask with one hand and lifting the maid’s chin with the other, whispering near her ear, "You’re so beautiful."

The maid’s heart raced. Even though the Second Prince was currently confined to his mansion, his living conditions hadn’t worsened, and all they desired was a good life.

"Thank you for the compliment, Your Highness," she said, bowing modestly.

Pei Chengye pinched her chin, about to lean in, when the butler hurried in to report, "Second Prince, the Fourth Prince is here for a visit."
