Chapter 516 - 518 Plague

Chapter 516: Chapter 518 Plague

Shao He did not go out to see patients today and lay in bed, dozing off. By the time she woke up again, it was already evening. She got up, pushed open the window, and looked outside.

The fresh air after the rain came streaming in, invigorating her spirits. Just as she was stretching her limbs, someone knocked on the door.

"Come in."

Qingxia, carrying food, walked in and set it down on the table upon seeing that her mistress was up.

"This servant guessed right; I knew Miss would be up at this time, so I specially prepared a meal for fear that Miss might be hungry," Qingxia said with a giggle.

"You really are the worm in my stomach."

Shao He joked as she walked over to sit down, her appetite whetted by the smell of the tempting meal. After eating her fill, she asked, "Where’s Qingshan?"

"It seems I haven’t seen her all day today; I don’t know where she’s run off to be lazy," Qingxia said, frowning.

Her sister wouldn’t normally be like this; she didn’t know what was up with her today.

"Perhaps she had something to do," Shao He knew very well that it must be because Pei Hanze had left and that it would take some time before Qingshan could completely forget.

Qingxia couldn’t help but mutter, "What could be more important than attending to Miss?"

"You." Shao He got up and tapped her on the nose before leaving the room.

She wandered aimlessly, finding herself outside Pei Huaian’s room before she knew it. Just as she was about to step over, she heard an angry voice from inside.

"You can’t even handle a small matter; what’s the use of feeding you officials!"

"Fifth Prince, please calm your anger. The matter with the grain indeed hides a complication; it’s not that we were delayed, but rather an unexpected downpour on the way, which caused the grain to be unavoidably stranded."

"When trouble arises, all you do is shirk and obstruct. But when there’s credit to be claimed, you rush to the front. You’ve all planned this quite well, haven’t you?"

Pei Huaian had long since seen through these officials, aware of their little schemes. He hadn’t settled accounts with them previously merely because Jingzhou had not yet stabilized.

But now things were different. Jingzhou’s situation had somewhat calmed down, and it was time these officials were properly chastised; otherwise, if things continued as they were, Jingzhou would still be ruined at their hands.

The officials knelt down one after another, hurriedly saying, "Fifth Prince, forgive us; we truly didn’t anticipate such an event, it was completely unexpected. We will certainly find a solution as quickly as possible."

"Good, I’ll give you three days; if I don’t see what I want in three days, you can consider your official hats gone. Get out!"

The officials immediately scrambled out in fright and wet themselves, making sure to touch their official hats on their way out.

Ah Mo hesitated, holding the tea, daring not to bring it in.

Just as he was about to turn and leave, the items in his hand were suddenly taken away.

He was about to scold the person, but upon raising his eyes and seeing the face, he immediately showed a surprised expression and bowed, "I’ve seen Doctor Shao."

"You go down first."

Shao He waved her hand and, holding the tea, walked into the room.

As soon as she entered the room, a ball of paper flew at her, hitting her right on the forehead.

"Ouch," Shao He cried out in feigned pain.

Pei Huaian had not expected her to be the visitor, quickly put down his pen and walked over, concerned, "Are you alright? Are you hurt?"

"Why are you so angry today?" Shao He set the tea down on the table and poured two cups of water.

Pei Huaian helped her sit down and then sat beside her, sighing, "These officials aren’t doing anything for the people, yet they think of claiming the Imperial Court’s salary!"

"These officials are just too used to idling about, but they haven’t wronged the common folk. With strict supervision, they should become good officials," Shao He reassured him.

Pei Huaian laughed in response, "That’s why I only intended to scare them. Thinking of removing their positions isn’t as simple as just talking about it."

Shao He was about to say more when Ah Mo suddenly rushed over in a panic, "Master, Doctor Shao, something has happened to the medical hall! Suddenly, some commoners have contracted the plague, three have already died, and dozens are now infected; the situation is extremely critical."

Pei Huaian’s face changed upon hearing this, immediately preparing to rush to the medical hall.

Shao He asked him to wait a moment, went into the inner room, and thought about what she needed: protective suits, masks, hats, gloves, goggles, rubber shoes, and isolation gowns.

"All set, let’s go," Shao He said, taking the prepared items with her.

By the time they reached the medical hall, a crowd of commoners had already gathered, and the interior was in utter chaos.

Pei Huaian and Shao He, fully equipped, walked in and saw patients lying on stretchers with symptoms that were strikingly similar: high fever, vomiting, coughing.

"Please, save them! They’ve contracted the plague; they’ll die if they don’t get treated immediately!" A middle-aged woman knelt on the ground, grabbing the hem of the doctor’s robe, and cried out hoarsely.

Shao He went over to the patient to examine him. Noticing something wasn’t quite right, she took his pulse.

After a moment, she let go of his wrist and turned to Ah Mo, "Clear the medical hall of all unrelated individuals, and you, lead the soldiers to stand guard outside. No one is to come near."

Shao He handed out some protective suits to him, instructing him and the soldiers to don them while guarding the entrance to the medical hall.

"Yes?" Ah Mo immediately responded.

Ah Mo took the protective suits without a hint of doubt, knowing only that his master trusted Doctor Shao, and what Doctor Shao said was tantamount to his master’s word.
