Chapter 502: Chapter 504: Leaving a Backup Plan

The next morning, Shao He woke up just as dawn was breaking.

Pei Huaian and Shao He were strolling in the woods, but in truth, they were searching for a way out.

Although the Man in Black Robe had promised not to harm them, human intentions are hard to predict. There was no harm in being cautious beforehand, but rather it was simply giving themselves an additional option.

"What are you doing here?" Suddenly, a cold voice sounded from behind.

Pei Huaian and Shao He turned around to see that the person behind them was the Third Elder from yesterday’s platform.

"We are just wandering around with nothing particular to do," Pei Huaian replied.

The Third Elder glanced at both of them, then shifted his gaze onto Shao He.

Pei Huaian subtly moved his feet, positioning himself in front of Shao He and said, "If there’s nothing else, we will take our leave first."

The Third Elder suddenly smiled slyly, "You, with the bearing of an emperor, will have a harem of three thousand beauties."

The remark made Shao He grip his hand tightly. Pei Huaian felt her emotional shift, took her hand in his, and Shao He looked back at him and gently shook her head.

"So what?" Pei Huaian raised his eyebrows, a trace of sarcasm on his face.

The Third Elder seemed to realize his gaffe and composed himself, saying, "It is most taboo in the emperor’s family to lack offspring. Since you have chosen the throne, you should sever all sentiments and desires; otherwise, you are sure to be a foolish ruler in the future."

"Ha!" Pei Huaian scoffed coldly.

Besides, which emperor in this world could guarantee he did not favor women?

"You may leave," said the Third Elder, his hands behind his back and his tone indifferent, "Once you leave, do not set foot here again to avoid any misfortune."

After saying this, he walked straight to the other side.

Shao He watched the retreating figure of the Third Elder, a hint of confusion flashing through her eyes.

Just now, she thought she heard a few odd phrases. However, the content was too jumbled and she did not delve into it.

Standing beside Pei Huaian, Shao He asked, "Did you hear anything strange just now?"

"What?" Pei Huaian turned to look at her, a strange gleam in his eyes.

"It’s nothing."

Just now, she had indeed faintly heard the Third Elder say a few words. But when she tried to listen carefully, only the wind and empty echoes remained in her ears.

Thus, she still did not know what exactly had happened.

"It’s nothing." Seeing him shake his head, Shao He also did not press further, took his hand, and continued walking forward.

The two of them followed the path through the forest and came to an open meadow. The plants on the meadow were very lush, and the sunlight shining on their leaves produced a kaleidoscope of colors.

Shao He sat down to rest for a while, then got up to look around.

The meadow was vast, she needed to find an exit quickly to get out sooner.

Pei Huaian held her hand, signaling her not to rush.

"What is it?"

Pei Huaian shook his head, "Don’t worry, I’ll look around with you."

"Okay," Shao He nodded.

They walked leisurely down the path, suddenly a breeze blew, causing the leaves to rustle. Shao He stopped, frowning and looking around.

She always felt something strange might happen.

Pei Huaian noticed her actions and immediately became vigilant, positioning her behind him.

Suddenly, a pure white horse burst out of the bushes, neighing and charging toward them.

"Ah—"

Shao He screamed in fright.

Pei Huaian immediately held her, using his broad chest to shield her from all winds and storms.

The steed raced up close and stopped. It raised its neck, neighed loudly, then lowered its head.

Shao He, still unsettled, clutched his arm and leaned on his chest, gasping for breath.

Pei Huaian patted her back, soothing her softly: "It’s okay now, it’s all okay..."

The steed’s neighing gradually faded.

The horse slowly got up from the ground, moving with a graceful and nimble stride, it slowly left.

Shao He remained nestled in Pei Huaian’s embrace.

Once the steed was completely gone, Pei Huaian then let her go and helped her up, asking with concern, "Are you okay?"

"I’m fine." Shao He managed to squeeze out a smile, "Thank you."

"I should be protecting you," Pei Huaian said.

Shao He was briefly stunned, then laughed, "Then you also take good care of yourself."

"Yes." Pei Huaian reached out to touch her head, looking at her affectionately.

Shao He nodded and followed him searching in the forest.

The Man in Black Robe watched their every move, then stepped out from the shadows.

"Ah-choo!"

Shao He couldn’t help sneezing.

"Tired?" Pei Huaian turned his head to ask her.

Shao He rubbed her nose, saying, "Not tired. It’s just that the temperature here is a bit low."

"What are you doing here?"

Suddenly a cold voice rang out.

Shao He and Pei Huaian both looked up at the speaker, seeing it was the Man in Black Robe, they immediately became wary, Shao He asked, "Why are you here again?"

"I should be the one asking you that," the Man in Black Robe glanced at her, then looked at Pei Huaian, and said, "A piece of advice for you, better not wander off, or else if you accidentally lose your lives, don’t blame me for not warning you."

At these words, Pei Huaian’s eyelids twitched, then he returned to normal, "We have already followed you to the Southern Frontier, what exactly do you want to do?"

"Give me three more days. After three days, I will let you go," the Man in Black Robe asserted confidently.

Pei Huaian and Shao He had no choice but to wait another three days, but they did not sit idly by.
