Chapter 494: Chapter 496: Revealing One’s Feelings
Shao He’s hands never stopped as he looked at the instruments, constantly adjusting and searching for the fallen blood clots.
Yun Qian knew something must have gone wrong but dared not ask, only silently standing aside.
"Bring the tweezers and the suction tube."
Just as Shao He was about to give up, he finally spotted the fallen blood clot and began the suturing surgery after clearing the last one.
If one says craniotomy is dangerous, it’s not the opening but the suturing—having to sew from the inner to outer layers, including the dura, skull, subcutaneous, and skin, ensuring that the cerebrospinal fluid does not leak.
Moreover, a drainage tube had to be inserted to drain the blood from the surgical site to the outside, reducing the formation of postoperative hematoma.
After enduring two Chinese hours, Shao He finally finished the suturing and breathed a sigh of relief at the stable condition.
"What exactly is going on here?" Yun Qian finally couldn’t hold back and asked.
"This matter is too complicated to explain in a word or two. Don’t ask too much and don’t meddle."
Yun Qian grabbed her arm, lowering his voice, "How can I not be involved? Are you being coerced by him?"
"Moreover, weren’t you supposed to go to Jingzhou? Why have you returned so soon? Where are Qingxia and Qingshan?"
Shao He looked sharply at him, "I’m telling you once again, don’t ask about anything, just pretend you don’t know."
Yun Qian wanted to say more when the woman in the sickbed suddenly reacted strongly, her heartbeat starting to accelerate. Shao He went back to the operating table.
After administering medication and an injection, her heart gradually stabilized.
When Shao He and Yun Qian left the room, the Man in Black Robe opened his mouth as if to ask something but stopped, fearing that the result might not be what he wished for.
"She is all right now, but she needs to be observed for some time." Shao He massaged his temples wearily.
"Thank you," said the Man in Black Robe, finally relaxing his tightly clenched fists. His complexion improved, and sweat beads were faintly visible on his forehead, indicating how nervous he had been.
Shao He gave instructions for care. Since the woman had just undergone surgery, she had to be isolated from others to prevent infection in the surgical wound. Observations needed to be made for some time.
Though the Man in Black Robe was eager to see the woman, he knew he had to heed Shao He’s advice.
Not until the next day did the Man in Black Robe finally see his beloved woman, who was still unconscious, showing no sign of awaking.
Inside the Fourth Prince’s Mansion, Pei Jingyi, upon hearing of Shao He’s return, asked with some confusion, "Why did she suddenly come back? Could it be that something has happened to Pei Huaian?"
The guardsman behind him replied, "Your subordinate thinks it has to do with the people who returned with her."
"Oh, is that so?" Pei Jingyi smiled, "Keep watching, and come back immediately if there is any activity."
"Yes," the guard turned and left.
Pei Jingyi sat in his chair lost in thought for a long time, recalling the dream from last night—it felt too real to believe.
Yet, that dream made him wonder if everything could indeed happen as dreamt.
Hurriedly, a guard came to report, "Your Highness, Xia Zhaoshun is requesting to meet."
"What does he want?" Pei Jingyi pondered, yet he told the guard to bring the visitor over.
Xia Zhaoshun approached with a smile, bowing, "Greetings to the Fourth Prince."
"May I know what brings Master Xia to my mansion?" Pei Jingyi inquired.
As the saying goes, no one visits without a reason, especially not to the humble mansion of a junior prince like his.
"Naturally, I have come to discuss cooperation with the Fourth Prince," Xia Zhaoshun stated his intentions plainly.
Pei Jingyi scoffed, "There’s nothing here that could possibly interest Master Xia."
"Hehe..." Xia Zhaoshun gently clapped his hands, "Worthy of the Fourth Prince!"
He looked up at Pei Jingyi, with a probing gaze. "Let’s not beat around the bush. I came here today to reveal my intentions."
Pei Jingyi raised an eyebrow, signaling him to continue.
"I am willing to support you from behind. Once you become the Crown Prince, appoint me as the Grand Tutor," Xia Zhaoshun stated slowly.
"Oh?" Pei Jingyi’s eyes narrowed.
"With the Fifth Prince’s trip to Jingzhou with an uncertain fate and the Second Prince imprisoned, you are now the most likely candidate for Crown Prince," Xia Zhaoshun spoke slowly.
After a long silence, Pei Jingyi asked, "Why should I trust you?"
Xia Zhaoshun had anticipated this, smiling, "Whether you trust me is not important. What’s important is that trusting me brings you no harm."
Pei Jingyi frowned, doubting that Xia Zhaoshun had such good intentions.
"How can I believe that you can help me become the Crown Prince?"
Xia Zhaoshun replied with a smile, "There are no permanent enemies in this world, especially since we share a common enemy."
"Who are you referring to?" Pei Jingyi asked tentatively.
"Pei Huaian—he caused my father’s demotion and made my life difficult at court."
Thinking it over, Pei Jingyi realized that Xia Zhaoshun really had issues with Pei Huaian.
Still, he harbored some worries, as his sister’s death was undeniably linked to himself.
Xia Zhaoshun nodded, continuing, "Correct! Have you ever considered, with the Second Prince’s lineage out of viable candidates, if you could replace him, wouldn’t it be..."
Pei Jingyi pondered for a moment, finding some sense in his words.
"I hope the Fourth Prince will consider carefully. I shall take my leave now," Xia Zhaoshun said, smirking.
With that, he left without looking back.
