Chapter 493: Chapter 495: Gambling with Life

The man in the black robe had been staying in the room continuously. Shao He could tell he was deeply in love with the woman, but that shouldn’t have been his reason to kill others.

When the man in the black robe noticed her gaze, his lips curled into a cold smirk, "Do you think I’m hateful?"

"Pitiable people always have their hateful sides. Although you did it to save the woman you love, disregarding other people’s lives is truly wrong," Shao He calmly responded.

The man in the black robe stood up and sat across from him, picked up the teapot, and poured a cup of tea, keeping it in his hands.

"Yes, she probably thought the same," he sighed helplessly.

Shao He didn’t know what had happened between them, she always disliked prying, especially into others’ secrets—listening too much made it easy for people to silence you.

The man in the black robe, however, started speaking on his own accord, "We were once deeply in love, but I was too blinded by greed, ignoring her pleas until I drove her to her death."

"Not until she fell into my arms, covered in blood, did I realize nothing was more important, but it was all too late," the man in the black robe recalled that painful memory.

If he could do it all over again, he would choose to stay with the person he loved, rather than doing things she couldn’t accept to make her life better.

Shao He kept her silence. She never liked to comment on others’ feelings.

The man in the black robe seemed surprised by her calmness, "You always manage to surprise me."

"I am a doctor; treating patients is my duty. Other matters are of no concern to me," Shao He put down her teacup and walked towards the bed.

Suddenly, the man in the black robe asked, "Is the Fifth Prince very important to you?"

Shao He was by the bed but hadn’t sat down yet. She didn’t understand why the man in the black robe would ask that.

Seeing her reaction, he seemed pleased and slowly said, "You don’t need to be too nervous; I’m just curious. What would you do if something happened to the Fifth Prince?"

Shao He suppressed the panic within her and forced herself to sit calmly.

Seeing that she had settled down, he continued, "I really do admire you. The Fifth Prince treats you so well, and yet you could watch him fall into a crisis."

He paused, then chuckled softly, "Maybe you are a very wise person, but aren’t you afraid that he might truly face danger?"

"What would you do if I said I believe in him?" Shao He looked up earnestly at the man in the black robe.

"Are you sure?" he countered.

"You don’t need to sow discord. Since I dared to follow you back to the Capital City, I believe in him. At least in my heart, he will always be the best," Shao He’s tone was firm.

"Haha!" the man in the black robe laughed uproariously.

Shao He stood by the window watching his wild behavior, her eyebrows furrowed, but she still never stepped forward to stop him.

When the man in the black robe seemed to have vented enough, he turned and walked back to the bed, looking at the person in the bed with a sorrowful and puzzled expression, as if it also revealed intense grief and despair.

"Do you really want him to survive?"

Shao He didn’t answer, her clear eyes stared tightly at the man in the black robe, feeling there was something odd about him today, and his words were difficult to grasp.

"Heh!" The man in the black robe sneered coldly.

"If you want him to live well, I can help you. I can even help him ascend to the position of Crown Prince easily, and even the throne might not be impossible," the man in the black robe said, his lips curled with a sinister smile.

"What do you want to do?" Shao He watched him warily.

The man in the black robe smiled ambiguously, "Don’t worry, it’s a good thing for you. I just need your cooperation," he continued.

After he finished, he reached out toward Shao He’s cheek, but Shao He quickly turned her head away. He wasn’t annoyed and instead withdrew his hand and continued, "If you refuse my offer, I’ll have to go and negotiate with the Fifth Prince myself."

Shao He narrowed her eyes, sizing him up, trying to decipher the meaning of his words. After a while, she said, "Pei Huaian won’t agree."

The man in the black robe smiled in satisfaction, "That is not necessarily true. Men’s ambitions are great."

"I believe he won’t," Shao He stated firmly.

"How about we make a bet?"

"Bet on what?"

"Bet on our lives!"

...

Days rushed by, and during these days, Shao He had been staying in the operating room, and she had finally decided to perform a craniotomy.

Although such surgery was extremely risky, it was better than letting her continue to sleep. If it continued like this, the woman’s life would be in great danger.

Just before the surgery, the man in the black robe held the woman’s hand, placing her icy hand on his chest, "Feel how fast it’s beating. Every time I hear its fierce thumping, I feel very safe, very happy..."

As he spoke, his eyes reddened and tears shimmered, "I’ve never regretted the decision I made, even if today it makes me lose everything, but I only regret that, in the beginning, wanting you to have a better life ruined you, ruined everything that was ours."

"Now, I know I was wrong. You must survive safely. I am willing to make amends, give me a chance," the man in the black robe said, then leaned over and kissed her forehead.

Shao He slowly closed the surgery doors, preparing for the surgery. The woman’s hair was completely shaved off, and the surgery began at the marked spot.

During the surgery, there were also dangerous moments, and Shao He’s sweat kept falling from her brow and eyes.
