Chapter 482: Chapter 484: Trapped in an Illusion
In her dream, Shao He arrived at a dark forest, enveloped in pitch-black leaves and black streams, even the sun itself was black.
This filled her with terror, and she ran frantically, unable to escape from this place.
Suddenly, a familiar figure appeared in front of the stream. Shao He rushed over joyfully and cried out, "Huaian... uh..."
Pei Huaian turned around, saw her, and grabbed her throat.
"Huaian, cough cough... what are you... cough cough, why do you want to kill me? Cough cough cough..."
Pei Huaian stared at her coldly, his icy voice ringing out, "Because you deserve to die!"
After saying this, he twisted her neck forcefully with his hand around her throat, only letting go after Shao He had stopped breathing, then walked away without a backward glance.
Shao He’s eyes widened as she stared at the sky, tears streaming uncontrollably.
She was terrified, truly terrified, a fear she had never experienced before.
After an unknown amount of time, a cool breeze blew, and she woke up again, trembling all over.
"Wuwu..." Shao He crouched on the ground and wept loudly.
"Xiao He..."
A voice seemed to echo in her ear; Shao He suddenly lifted her head.
"Huaian, where are you?"
"Xiao He, I’m here!" A voice called out, and following the sound, she saw Pei Huaian walking slowly towards her.
"Huaian..." Shao He, excited, rushed up to him and hugged him.
Pei Huaian wrapped his arms around her waist, a faint smile appearing on his face as he gently stroked her head, saying tenderly, "It’s alright, don’t be scared! I’m here!"
He bent down to kiss her forehead, murmuring over and over again, as if speaking to Shao He and perhaps to someone else as well.
Shao He clung to his waist, her face buried in his chest as she sobbed, "Huaian, I’m so scared... really so scared..."
"Mmm... don’t be scared..." Pei Huaian soothed, patting her back gently.
The two held each other for a long time, when suddenly, black blood trickled from the corner of Pei Huaian’s mouth.
He looked at Shao He incredulously, lifting his hand slightly towards her, "You, you..."
"You’re not him, Huaian never calls me Xiao He, and I must be trapped in an illusion. To get out, I have to break through my inner desires."
Shao He looked deeply at Pei Huaian, raised her hand to caress his face, and pushed the dagger further into his chest.
Eventually, she woke up from her sleep, and by this time, it was already broad daylight. Shao He got out of bed, tidied up her appearance, and then stepped out the door.
The woman greeted her warmly, "Miss, you’ve finally gotten up, are you hungry?"
Listening to her, Shao He remembered what they had done the night before and repeatedly waved her hands.
"I’m not hungry."
She went straight to Pei Hanze’s room and knocked for a long while without anyone answering from inside.
Shao He pushed the door and entered, only to see Pei Hanze on the bed, his lips curved in a happy smile.
As she hesitated whether to wake Pei Hanze or not, the person on the bed suddenly opened his eyes, shooting a piercing gaze towards Shao He.
"You’re awake?" Shao He hadn’t expected him to wake from the illusion.
Pei Hanze, recognizing the person in front of him, softened his gaze and sat up from the bed, rubbing his weary forehead.
"We were caught in an illusion?"
"Yes, and I witnessed them feeding raw meat to a child," said Shao He, shuddering at the memory.
Both of them were unaware of what had transpired here, but a shared thought of one person came to their minds.
"Ah Mo."
Shao He and Pei Hanze arrived at Ah Mo’s room and indeed, they found him lying awake in bed, yet unable to speak a complete sentence.
"Village, people, dead..." Ah Mo struggled to speak, managing only a few words that burned his throat painfully.
Pei Hanze suggested bringing pen and paper for him to write down the situation, but Ah Mo’s arms were so weak that even holding a pen was extremely difficult.
With a grave expression, Shao He once again checked his pulse, finding that aside from his severe depletion of Inner Strength, he had also been poisoned.
"Someone was here last night, right?"
Seeing this, Ah Mo nodded his head frantically.
Upon which, Shao He asked, "Why would the children have to eat raw meat?"
Hearing this aroused even more agitation in Ah Mo, but he could only utter incoherent noises. He shook his head and then nodded again.
Pei Hanze frowned deeply, "What’s wrong with him? What is he trying to express?"
Shao He was uncertain too, and after a moment’s thought, she tentatively asked, "Was that not raw meat?"
Ah Mo nodded.
"That can’t be, I clearly saw..." she broke off abruptly, a chilling possibility dawning on her, "Was that human flesh?"
At these words, Ah Mo immediately nodded his head energetically.
The two exchanged a look, both displaying a shocked expression. Human flesh? It was indeed human flesh!
"Miss, come quickly, dinner is ready," called out a woman’s voice from outside.
Ah Mo attempted to speak again, and Shao He reassured, "Don’t worry, we know they are not good people, we’ll be more careful."
With Ah Mo somewhat calmed, the two left the room. Qing Shan and Qingxia had also woken up, followed by Yun Hua coming out of the house.
Everyone looked pale, seemingly having experienced the illusion as well.
Qingxia rushed hurriedly to Shao He, Qing Shan reached out to grab her but didn’t catch her.
As she was about to speak about the illusion they experienced last night, everyone’s heart jumped to their throats.
