Chapter 453: Chapter 455: Using Severe Torture
Pei Huaian had been pondering who the person was, giving him a familiar feeling, but he was certain it wasn’t Pei Chengye nor Pei Jingyi.
The next morning, before dawn had broken, the cell door was opened, and two jailers walked in.
Seeing the sleeping figure, they hesitated, one of them finally spoke, "You go!"
"Why don’t you go? He is a prince after all. If he regains the Emperor’s favor after sunset, won’t we be in a dismal state?"
The other person pushed the jailer, "You go quickly."
The jailer hesitated for a moment, then cautiously approached Pei Huaian, stretching out his arms to wake him when his hand was suddenly grabbed.
Pei Huaian opened his eyes, glowering coldly at his companion, "What are you doing?"
"No, nothing!" The startled jailer quickly withdrew his hand and took a few nervous steps back, then mustering up his courage, he shouted, "You, come with us."
"Where to?" Pei Huaian squinted his eyes.
"You will know once you get there," said the Fifth Prince.
Pei Huaian followed the jailers out of the cell, pausing at the door, then suddenly turning back to look at the jailer.
The jailer was so frightened that he nearly fell, but fortunately, he steadied himself against the wall.
"Stop staring at me like that, I don’t know anything," the jailer struggled to keep his voice steady.
Pei Huaian sneered, "I know that you know everything."
Pei Huaian followed the jailer to another room in the dungeon.
This was the dungeon’s interrogation room, walls hung with various torture devices, the air filled with a nauseating smell.
"Fifth Prince, please take a seat," the jailer respectfully pointed to a chair nearby, then turned and left, not daring to stay any longer.
Pei Huaian walked calmly to the chair and sat down, waiting to be interrogated.
Perhaps because of his long stay in the dungeon, his body had adapted to the humidity and heat; he showed no signs of discomfort and maintained an air of nonchalance.
He sat in the chair for a while but no one came, so he closed his eyes to rest.
Suddenly, a ’snap’ echoed near his ear, like the sound of a chain breaking, or something falling from above.
He abruptly opened his eyes, only to see a face looming before him, not yet able to discern the features, when a foul stench hit him, followed by a sharp pain in his chest as a rush of sweet, coppery blood flooded his throat. He clutched his wound, gasping, "You..."
Zhao Yuanjiang stood before him, head bowed looking down, "Fifth Prince, sorry for accidentally hurting you."
Pei Huaian coughed violently, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He struggled to look up at the person before him, his pupils shrinking suddenly.
By Zhao Yuanjiang’s side stood a man with an ugly face, covered in grotesque scars, deep and shallow scratches crisscrossing each other. The slap just now had come from him.
"Master Zhao really has some nerve," Pei Huaian said as he raised his hand to wipe the blood from his mouth.
Zhao Yuanjiang waved his hand, and someone quickly brought a cup of hot tea.
He took it, came over to Pei Huaian, and respectfully handed it to him.
"Although this tea is an apology from me, I didn’t manage my subordinate strictly, I hope the Fifth Prince can forgive me."
Pei Huaian took the tea, then his hand loosened, and the cup fell to the ground and shattered.
"I’ve never known what the word ’forgive’ means, nor will I forgive!"
Zhao Yuanjiang stroked his chin, feigning difficulty, and while Pei Huaian wasn’t looking, swiped out a handful of powder.
Pei Huaian abruptly opened his eyes and quickly stood up.
As he took a step forward, he found his limbs were weak and limp, dangling powerlessly at his sides.
"You..." Pei Huaian gave a cautious look around.
"Since the Fifth Prince won’t take it easy, I will have to do it the hard way," Zhao Yuanjiang said with a smug smile.
He took out a sheet of paper detailing the crimes and handed it to Pei Huaian. "Just press your handprint here, and you can avoid all punishments."
"What if I don’t?"
"Then don’t blame me for being harsh," Zhao Yuanjiang said plainly.
Zhao Yuanjiang clearly didn’t want to make it easy for him, anger churned within Pei Huaian, yet he could not move.
Just then, Yan Ze in official attire came hurrying in, pointing at Zhao Yuanjiang and cursing, "You’ve got some nerve, daring to use torture privately!"
"Why not? Are these punishments solely meant for commoners?" Zhao Jiangyuan retorted with one sentence, leaving him at a loss for words.
Yan Ze narrowed his eyes, a murderous look in them: "Master Zhao, do you think you can do whatever you wish just because you have the Second Prince’s protection?"
"You worry too much," Zhao Yuanjiang replied.
"Hmph, let’s hope. Let me remind you once again today: if you continue this way, even the Second Prince won’t be able to save you!"
Zhao Yuanjiang sneered, "Master Yan, aren’t you the one speaking in reverse? I am merely following the laws."
Yan Ze’s eyes widened, "You!"
"Yan Ze, no need to waste words with him. I want to see how capable he really is," Pei Huaian weakly spoke.
He was certain Zhao Yuanjiang wouldn’t dare kill him; surviving was enough.
Zhao Yuanjiang waved his hand, and the jailers immediately escorted him out.
"Zhao Yuanjiang, you will regret this!"
"If you dare carry out the torture, I will never let you off!"
Unfortunately, his shouts had no effect, and soon the sound of whipping followed.
