Chapter 449: Chapter 451: Can’t Lose You

Pei Huaian leaned in slightly, his gaze fixed on her red lips, so close that he could feel the rise of a tidal wave of desire in his eyes...

"Mmm!"

Bowing his head, he kissed her vehemently, fiercely nibbling at her red lips, his tongue prying between her teeth, sweeping across every inch of her mouth until she was completely overcome.

Such a passionate kiss lasted a whole half minute before Pei Huaian reluctantly let her go. Their foreheads touched, their noses brushed, and their breath intertwined.

"Shao He, I really can’t lose you."

His deep eyes were as dark as a pond, gazing intensely at her.

Shao He stared at him blankly, a sweet and throbbing feeling suddenly arising in her heart.

Their proximity was so close she could even feel their burning body heat.

"We are husband and wife; where does this losing or not losing come from between us?" Her voice was soft and fluffy, like cotton candy seeping into his heart, making his whole body tingle.

Pei Huaian’s heart was pounding fiercely; he couldn’t help but wrap his arms around her slender waist.

Shao He was startled and reflexively tried to push him away.

"Don’t move!" His voice was hoarse and gruff.

Shao He stopped, obediently allowing him to hold her as she listened to the strong, powerful beats of his heart, a tingling sensation in her ears. She involuntarily reached for the hair beside her ear.

"I’m truly scared, scared that you will leave me, scared that you will abandon me," Pei Huaian let her go, looking earnestly at her.

"How could I?" Shao He was puzzled as she looked at him.

The way the Imperial Uncle looks at you is out of the ordinary," Pei Huaian said with a hint of grievance.

Shao He frowned: "Are you that insecure?"

Pei Huaian quickly shook his head: "No, it’s because you’re too wonderful, I’m afraid someone might take you away."

"That won’t happen," Shao He said with certainty.

No one could give her more than Pei Huaian had; even if she met another outstanding man, she would only admire him and never harbor any inappropriate thoughts.

The hostility surrounding Pei Huaian dissipated quite a bit, as if with Shao He by his side, he could slowly control his own volatile emotions.

Pei Huaian let go of the person in his arms, suppressing the instinctive reaction of his body.

"It’s getting late, you should rest early."

Shao He watched the man leave as if fleeing, the smile at the corner of her mouth slowly widening.

The next day, the news of Shao Mingyang’s murder spread throughout Capital City, and all evidence pointed to Pei Huaian.

The court was abuzz with discussion as numerous ministers presented memorials to The Emperor, demanding a thorough investigation of the case to prevent public panic.

The Emperor intended to assign the case to Minister Yan Ze of the Court of Judicial Review, but this decision met with the ministers’ objections.

"Your Majesty, I feel that this is inappropriate. As everyone knows, Master Yan has a special relationship with the Fifth Prince. If he were to investigate this matter, it could give rise to suspicions of bias."

"Yes, Your Majesty, I too believe that Master Yan should not conduct the investigation."

"I concur."

All the scholars present strongly opposed the idea, prompting The Emperor to stand up angrily and slam his hand on the table.

"Calm yourself, Your Majesty," the ministers knelt in unison.

Eventually, The Emperor suppressed his inner rage and said, "This time the Vice Minister of Justice will investigate the case, with Yan Ze assisting."

"Do any of you still have objections?" The Emperor asked coldly.

The great hall fell silent.

Minister Zhao of the Ministry of Justice, who was friendly with the Second Prince, and Yan Ze, who was close to the Fifth Prince, were curious appointments, and the ministers couldn’t fathom The Emperor’s intentions.

"Since there are no objections, the court is dismissed!" The Emperor waved his hand and left.

After the court disbanded, everyone gradually exited the palace gate.

Minister Zhao waited in place for Yan Ze. With a smile on his face, Minister Zhao said, "I hope we can have a pleasant cooperation this time."

Yan Ze, however, could not summon any joy. He was aware of Zhao Yuanjiang’s character; he was no ordinary person, and given the Fifth Prince’s pressure against him, there was a chance that Zhao might let personal grudges affect his judgment of the case.

"I hope that Master Zhao can handle this with impartiality and avoid personal vendettas," Yan Ze said.

Zhao Yuanjiang gave a cold smile, "Why would I."

"It would be best if so."

After Yan Ze spoke, he was about to leave when Zhao Yuanjiang called out to him.

"Why doesn’t Master Yan join me in visiting the Fifth Prince’s Mansion to arrest the Fifth Prince for questioning."

With a profound look, Yan Ze said after a moment, "Very well."

Together, the two officials, accompanied by only a few constables, made their way to the Fifth Prince’s Mansion. Seeing Yan Ze, the guard saluted, "Master Yan."

"Is the Fifth Prince in the Mansion?"

Before the guard could respond, Zhao Yuanjiang led the constables straight inside.

Pei Huaian, who was keeping Xiao Linzhang company, looked up to see the suddenly appearing figures and asked displeasedly, "What is the meaning of this, Master Zhao?"

Because of the commotion caused by Shao Mingyang’s case, Pei Huaian hadn’t attended the morning court and was resting at the mansion, hence he had no knowledge of what had transpired at court.

With a smug smile on his lips, Zhao Yuanjiang said, "The Fifth Prince will need to accompany me on a trip."

"By whose command does Master Zhao act?" Pei Huaian narrowed his eyes, a vicious glint flickering in their depths, and he warned with a chilling tone, "I am a Prince of the court; do not think that because you have the Second Prince’s backing you can act recklessly."

"Hmph, don’t forget what you have done, Fifth Prince. A prince is subject to the same laws as a commoner—please accompany me to the Ministry of Justice to assist with the investigation."

Zhao Yuanjiang was not intimidated by his threats.

Pei Huaian’s eyes flashed frostily, watching Zhao Yuanjiang’s triumphant demeanor, and he felt his rage rapidly rising within him.
