Chapter 401: Chapter 403 He’s Madly in Love with Her
This time, Shao He was certain that it was not an illusion.
"Who’s there?"
The window fell silent again.
Shao He got up and walked to the window, pushed it open and looked outside. It was pitch dark, and she could not see anything clearly.
Feeling somewhat puzzled, Shao He adjusted her clothes. Just as she was about to turn away, the window was pushed open again, and a figure slipped in and embraced her.
The person who was about to resist became dazed when she smelled a familiar scent, "Pei Huaian, is that you?"
"I missed you so much." Pei Huaian’s hoarse voice sounded in her ear.
Shao He found this voice incredibly beautiful, until a faint smell of blood reached her, causing the smile at the corner of her mouth to freeze, and she turned around with an anxious expression.
Pei Huaian’s hands clung tightly to her waist, burying his head into her neck, greedily inhaling the scent that belonged uniquely to her body.
"You’re hurt."
"It’s just a minor wound." Pei Huaian responded softly.
Shao He was greatly alarmed, hurriedly pushed Pei Huaian away, and examined him from head to toe to make sure only minor external injuries were on his body and arms before she relaxed.
"Wait here, I’ll go get the medical kit right away."
"Don’t go, just stay with me," Pei Huaian pulled her back into his arms, gently stroking her long hair.
He could no longer find any reason to let go; even if it cost him his life, he was willing to be with her despite a path filled with thorns ahead.
He was desperately in love with her!
"How can that be okay? Though they’re minor, the wounds could get infected," Shao He said softly.
Pei Huaian did not stop her, only gazing at her with a deep and infatuated look, "Okay."
Shao He quickly took a medical kit from the cabinet, her gaze complicated as she looked at the man lying on the bed.
"Take off your clothes." Shao He took out disinfectant,
"Mmm..." Pei Huaian responded softly, beginning to undress.
As his fair and robust muscles were exposed, Shao He’s movements paused, her breathing becoming somewhat irregular.
Pei Huaian, looking down at her flushed cheeks, teased with a smirk, "Shy?"
Shao He pursed her lips, hiding her embarrassment, "I’m a doctor. I’ve seen so many bodies like yours, how could I possibly be shy?"
Pei Huaian looked up at her, seized her hand, and pulled her onto the bed. Shao He was afraid of touching his wound and didn’t dare struggle too much.
"You’re still injured, let go at once!"
"Wait, I want to hold you a little longer." Pei Huaian tightened his hold on her hand, unwilling to let go.
Shao He sighed, "First, let me treat your wounds, and I will stay with you the whole time, okay?"
Pei Huaian paused, feeling that after returning this time, Shao He seemed different.
While he was momentarily lost in thought, Shao He pulled away from his embrace, gently dabbing the wound with a cotton swab,
Then she sprinkled on the golden sore medicine and wrapped up his injuries.
"Wait for me, I’ll heat up some porridge for you."
Pei Huaian watched her retreating figure and smiled contentedly. Although he had a narrow escape from death this time, he felt that all his efforts were worth it.
Shao He soon returned with a bowl of hot porridge, scooping up some and blowing on it before bringing it to Pei Huaian’s lips.
He opened his mouth and took in the porridge, staring unblinkingly at her.
"What’s wrong?"
Pei Huaian shook his head, continuing to gaze at her.
Her eyelashes were long, her nose was high and refined, her skin was fair, and her lips were delicate and pink, as if they were rose petals, moist and luscious.
All of a sudden, Pei Huaian extended his tongue and licked the porridge from the corner of his mouth, making Shao He flush with bashfulness.
She looked down to hide her awkwardness, while Pei Huaian showed a silly grin, "Sweet."
Shao He: "..."
The bowl of porridge was soon empty, and Shao He placed it on the table and turned back to the bed.
Pei Huaian moved over, patted the space beside him, and earnestly promised, "I swear I will not do anything inappropriate to you."
Shao He couldn’t help but smile wryly; she took off her shoes and lay down beside him, gazing at his stunning profile.
"Do you remember the first time we met?" Pei Huaian murmured, seemingly lost in the memories.
"Mass Burial Mound." Shao He recalled the past events, which now felt like a fleeting cloud. They had been in such a sorry state then.
Pei Huaian held her hand to his chest, "I’m so grateful I was thrown into the Mass Burial Mound that day, otherwise how would I have met you."
"I always thought life was unfair to me, taking away all my loved ones. Only later did I realize that all the hardships I endured were for the sake of meeting you."
Shao He listened quietly, thinking that the one who should be grateful was herself. Along the way, if not for Pei Huaian’s help, she didn’t know what she would have become.
Recalling what Eldest Princess Huimin had said, and noting his numerous injuries, she frowned and asked, "I heard you were victorious, that you successfully quelled the bandits."
"Yes, those bandits were extremely brutal and cunning, using the terrain to launch their attacks, causing us heavy losses. And those soldiers who were captured were treated with utter cruelty," Pei Huaian recounted the hard-won victory casually, though Shao He could tell from his tone how perilous it had been.
She had heard that the bandits deeply hated the soldiers, and if they captured one, they would cut his tendons and drag him behind a horse until he died. Others were dismembered and tortured to death while still alive.
