Chapter 400: Chapter 402: Return to the Court
"Will Doctor Shao be staying here for a meal?" Ah Mo asked.
"No need," Shao He waved her hand.
"Then please wait for a moment, I will immediately have someone brew a pot of tea for you."
Shao He nodded in acknowledgment.
Ah Mo hurriedly left.
A moment later, someone brought over a cup of tea and placed it on the desk; Shao He reached out for the cup, took a light sip, and a faint fragrance lingered on her taste buds.
A maid walked over, holding Lili’s hand. When Lili saw Shao He, she joyfully rushed over.
"Pretty Auntie, has my daddy come back yet?"
Seeing those clear eyes, Shao He raised her hand to touch the top of her head and softly replied, "He’ll be back soon, daddy is going to be home shortly."
"Really? That’s fantastic." Lili cheered happily, the thought of soon seeing her daddy making her extremely excited.
"Has Lili been a good girl recently? Have you been obediently eating your meals?"
"Yes, Lili has been very good."
Shao He played with her for a while before preparing to leave.
Suddenly, Lili grabbed her hand, disappointment in her voice as she asked, "Can Lili go with the pretty auntie? I promise I won’t be any trouble."
Shao He squatted down and asked with a smile, "Isn’t it nice here?"
"It’s nice here, but I like being with pretty auntie even more." Lili clenched her hand tightly, nervous that she would be left behind.
The maid quickly came over and persuaded, "Little mistress, Doctor Shao is very busy and doesn’t have much time to accompany you. Will it be okay if I play with you instead?"
Lili’s gaze dimmed as she released her hand, knowing she shouldn’t be willful or cause trouble for others unnecessarily.
"Alright."
In the end, Shao He couldn’t bear it. Although Lili would be somewhat safer here, she would still be scared and feel lonely.
Lili, not quite understanding the meaning of her approval, cautiously asked, "Pretty auntie’s alright means..."
Shao He gave her a slight smile, looked up at the maid, and said, "Go pack Lili’s things. I’m taking her with me when I leave."
The maid was surprised and somewhat flustered—not to mention that if Miss Lili left, wouldn’t she be blamed by the Fifth Prince?
"Doctor Shao, have I done something wrong? I’ll definitely correct it," the maid said as she knelt down.
Shao He was a bit puzzled by her action, "You’ve misunderstood, I just think Lili is too lonely here. I didn’t say you’ve not taken good care of her. Please stand up."
The maid rose slowly from the ground and turned to pack Lili’s clothes.
Shao He brought Lili to Anji Hall. Her well-behaved demeanor surprised people like Yun Qian and Xiao Jiangheng, who doted on her immensely.
Two days later, Shao He had prepared everything, and all the instruments were ready.
The person who had been given the anesthetic soon began to drift into a drowsy stupor, their mind filled with a plethora of rich images.
By the time he regained consciousness, the surgery had ended. Xiao Jiangheng, feeling weak, asked, "I think I saw angels just now. Am I dying?"
"The surgery was very successful, you’ll need to rest and recuperate quietly for a few days," Shao He removed her mask and said with a smile.
Xiao Jiangheng’s recovery after the surgery was very good. It was fortunate his condition wasn’t serious, and he did not require invasive surgery.
"Really?"
Xiao Jiangheng, excited, tried to sit up but was restrained by Shao He, "You must rest properly. I’ll have Zhao Yuebei take care of you. You need to stay in bed for three days."
"Thank you," Xiao Jiangheng said sincerely, looking at her.
Shao He smiled faintly and left. Xiao Jiangheng watched her receding figure, deciding to follow his father’s arrangements.
Xiao Jiangheng’s health improved day by day, yet he still frequently visited Anji Hall, occasionally bringing various unique items and delicacies that weren’t available in the Capital City.
Yun Qian started to feel that something was off and kindly warned, "Be careful she might offer herself to you in gratitude for saving her life."
Shao He rolled her eyes at him, "That won’t happen."
Xiao Jiangheng was aware of his betrothal to the Fifth Prince. How could he possibly harbor any other feelings for her?
Yun Qian shrugged, "Don’t believe me if you don’t want to."
"It’s been almost a month since the Fifth Prince left. I heard he defeated the bandits, recaptured the city, and secured Changzhou. It must have been extremely dangerous along the way. Why hasn’t he returned yet?"
Logically, if they had been victorious, why hadn’t they returned to the Capital yet?
Shao He furrowed her brows—indeed, could something have happened to him?
"Don’t overthink it, I was just mentioning it in passing. Perhaps there are some follow-up matters they haven’t finished dealing with," Yun Qian regretted his words upon seeing the worry on her face.
Shao He nodded, showing a smile on her face, but the concern in her heart couldn’t be wiped away. That evening, she summoned Ah Mo to find out what exactly was going on.
"Doctor Shao needn’t worry, the master and his men have already started their return to the Capital. They should arrive in about three days. For security reasons, no one except The Emperor knows about this."
Shao He’s heart finally settled. As long as he was safe, it was all that mattered.
That night, the cold wind rustled, and Shao He lay in her bed, drifting into dreamland.
Suddenly, she heard several faint noises coming from outside the window.
Shao He’s eyes snapped open as she looked toward the window—she remembered clearly having closed it and bolted the shutters. Could she have been mistaken?
Just as she thought she was hearing things, the window shook slightly again.
