Chapter 379: Chapter 380: Nothing but a Scapegoat

Shao He frowned and said, "Do they really have nothing but tofu dregs in their heads? Thinking they can get rid of me like this, don’t they know that every action leaves traces? Did they really think it’s that easy to throw dirty water on someone?"

Pei Huaian couldn’t help but laugh, his affection showing as he lightly scraped her upturned nose and said with a smile, "They are certainly not as clever as you."

"..."

"Can you lie down and rest now?"

In the end, Shao He resignedly lay down, wondering when such days would come to an end.

Three days later, even though she was being nourished by medicinal herbs, Shao He still felt weak, possibly due to lying down for too long. Taking advantage of when Pei Huaian was not there, she snuck out of bed.

Perhaps because her body was too weak, she hadn’t walked far before her feet began to feel light and she nearly fell, fortunately being supported in time to prevent a fall.

"What are you doing here?!" Pei Huaian’s cold voice came to her ears.

Shao He’s body instantly stiffened, and she slowly lifted her head to see his dark face, managing a sheepish smile, "Um, I was a bit thirsty and came over to pour myself some water."

"Really?"

Pei Huaian looked at her with an inscrutable smile, making it impossible to discern his thoughts.

"Of course, what else did you think I was doing?"

Pei Huaian did not continue to question her but stared at her for a long while, then swept her into his arms and walked towards the bed.

"Hey, I can walk by myself," Shao He struggled, trying to get down.

Pei Huaian disregarded her, placed her on the bed, and handed her a clean, damp cloth.

"Running around like this right out of bed, be careful not to tear your wound open."

"I will be extra careful, after all, I cherish my life," Shao He said earnestly.

Pei Huaian sighed and walked over to pick up the teapot, pouring a cup of warm tea and handing it to her, "Even if you are a doctor, you shouldn’t joke about your own health."

"Thank you," Shao He took a sip of tea, the suitably warm water flowing down her throat, feeling comforting.

"Does it still hurt?"

Shao He was taken aback, lowering her eyes; no one had ever asked her if she was still in pain before.

"It’s okay now, it doesn’t hurt anymore."

The two fell into silence for a while before Pei Huaian spoke again, "You’ll be able to leave here soon."

"Did you catch the perpetrator? Who was it?" Shao He was eager to know if it was Pei Jingyi.

"Liang Rou’s personal maid."

Shao He widened her eyes in surprise; she hadn’t expected it to be her.

"I noticed something was amiss a long time ago, but I just didn’t have the right evidence," he said.

"I see, so what are you planning to do?" Shao He asked.

"I’ve already ordered people to question Liang Rou. We should have an answer soon."

"She won’t confess," Shao He said softly.

Liang Rou was much smarter than Liang Weishuang; she must have known what the consequences would be when she did it, and she would surely have taken everything into account.

As Shao He had expected, Liang Rou vehemently denied any wrongdoing, while her personal maids had confessed to all the charges.

The day Shao He was released, she happened upon Liang Rou also being released from prison.

As the saying goes, meeting one’s enemy could make one’s eyes turn red with rage, and Pei Huaian’s gaze was filled with intense killing intent.

Liang Rou, terrified, swallowed and tried to appear calm as she bowed, "I have seen the Fifth Prince."

"I’m sorry, Doctor Shao. It was my lack of discipline that led my maid to make such a huge mistake, causing Doctor Shao to be wrongly accused. It’s all my fault."

Liang Weishuang repented with tears streaming down her face, making it seem as if Shao He was unforgiving. Clearly, it was someone else’s maid who made the mistake, yet here she was making things difficult for the master.

Pei Huaian spoke indifferently, "Patriarch Liang, you indeed need to reflect on this. The prince will personally dispatch someone to explain the causes and consequences of this matter."

At these words, Liang Weishuang turned white as a sheet and quickly shook her head, "Fifth Prince, please show leniency. If my father learns of this, I will surely be punished."

"What does it matter to the prince whether you are punished or not? Even if you weren’t involved, if it weren’t for your failure to teach your maids properly, how could such a grave error have occurred?"

"It must be because you harbored dissatisfaction, constantly complaining to the maid, which led her to such malicious thoughts. You bear certain responsibility in this matter."

"I acknowledge my wrongdoing," Liang Rou apologized, forced to swallow her pride, clenching her fist hidden in her sleeve.

She was not willing to accept this, truly not willing!

Pei Huaian glanced over her coldly and without a word.

Shao He shook her head, "You better take care of yourself."

Pei Huaian took Shao He’s hand and led her away. As he left, his profound gaze swept over her shoulder, falling on Liang Rou with a bloodthirsty curve of his lips.

Liang Rou felt as if she were being targeted by a venomous snake, and now she couldn’t help feeling a bit frightened, wondering if she had really made a mistake.

After Shao He was released from prison, she took a bath, changed her clothes, and groomed herself before heading to another courtyard.

"Mama, Mama!" Xiao Linzhang ran over cheering, throwing himself between Shao He’s legs and incessantly calling out.

Seeing Shao He filled him with joy and excitement, and he clung to her skirt, climbing upwards, wanting her to hold him.

Shao He was about to squat down to pick up the child, but Pei Huaian beat her to it.

"Mama is hurt and can’t hold you. Be a good boy and listen," he said.

"I’m fine. The wounds have already scabbed over," Shao He spoke as she reached out her hand.

Pei Huaian stepped back, his tone firm, "No!"
