Chapter 976: Chapter 976: Giving You Is a Favor, Not Giving Is a Duty

As they were talking, they heard Bai Liping, the eldest daughter-in-law of the Kong Family, saying, "Is Third Sister-in-law back?"

Lu Yiting greeted her with a smile, "Big Sister-in-law, did you just get off work?"

Bai Liping smiled, "Yes, I just got off work."

Then turning to Luo Qiao and Lu Yichen, she said, "You’re back for the festival."

Luo Qiao smiled and nodded her head, "Yes, we’ve just come back. We saw Yiting was back as well, and it so happens that I’ve prepared some zongzi for her. She could take them home with her."

Handing over the zongzi and tea leaves to Lu Yiting, she said, "The tea leaves are for your father-in-law, and the zongzi are for you. After dinner, come over and chat with your grandfather, and go back with Big Sister-in-law."

Lu Yiting looked at her sister-in-law gratefully, "Alright, Second Sister-in-law, I’ll head back first then. I’ll come over to see Grandpa, Auntie, Yanyan and Yueyue after dinner."

Lu Yiting knew this was Second Sister-in-law giving her face, particularly making a point in front of her Kong Family Big Sister-in-law about coming over after dinner to accompany Grandpa, aware that it would be difficult for her to bring it up herself.

The Kong Family had divided the inheritance the night she came back for her home visit. Initially, her mother-in-law didn’t want to give her a house, justifying it by saying that since she already had a courtyard house in her hands, there was no need for her to compete with her brothers-in-law for a few rooms in the family compound. At the time, Kong Xiangrui retorted, "If in the future they don’t need to support us in our old age, then I have no objection."

His words nearly infuriated his mother-in-law, Fu Lanhua, but his father-in-law was quite fair, allotting two rooms per son’s family, although the additional room allocated to them was currently being used by Big Brother’s children.

Latter, the mother-in-law mentioned that giving them one room would suffice, since they didn’t have children yet, but the father-in-law insisted that all three sons were treated equally, saying he would only take care of his sons and leave the grandchildren to their parents.

With that said, neither the first nor the second family dared to complain. If the division had been based on the number of children, it would have been unfair to the youngest, who had only just gotten married and would find themselves at a disadvantage.

The house was the main asset in the family, while the money in the public fund was not divided up again since each family had previously contributed to the living expenses. The elderly couple now lived independently, not relying on any of their children for support, with the understanding that any future needs would be split evenly among the three families.

The room and living room where the elderly couple currently lived were not part of the division. After their passing, these would be divided equally among the three families. Then whoever wanted it could compensate the other two brothers.

After the division of the inheritance, family gatherings for festivals took place at the elderly couple’s home. What gifts to bring for these occasions was up to the discretion of each family, and in this amicable way, the property division was settled.

The day after the division, Kong Xiangrui had returned to the county. Lu Yiting mostly lived in the courtyard house there, occasionally staying with the Kong Family when visiting her grandfather. Originally, Kong Xiangrui was supposed to come back for the Dragon Boat Festival, but a last-minute issue prevented him, leading Lu Yiting to buy some pastries and cooked food to celebrate the festival by herself.

When Fu Lanhua saw her third daughter-in-law return, she did not show any displeasure. Upon noticing the items she was carrying, a smile appeared on her face, "You’re back."

Lu Yiting gave a slight smile, "Mhm."

She brought the items into the living room, where her father-in-law was reading the newspaper on the couch, "Dad, I’m back."

Kong Cunlai was completely satisfied with Lu Yiting, "Yiting’s back, come sit down and have some water."

Lu Yiting took out the tea leaves that Luo Qiao had given her, "Dad, these tea leaves are from my Second Sister-in-law at my parents’ house, she asked me to bring them to you."

Kong Cunlai gladly received them, "Your Second Sister-in-law really shouldn’t have gone to the trouble."

Fu Lanhua checked to see if there was anything for herself, "Gone to the trouble for what? They don’t lack such small things, we’re all family, there’s no need for formalities."

Kong Cunlai looked up at his wife, "Be quiet, what’s theirs is theirs, what has it got to do with you? Giving it to you is a favor, not giving it to you is perfectly fine, what are you talking about? It seems like you’re regressing with age."

Just then, daughter-in-law Hao Chunyan walked in, "Dad, who upset you now? My mother asked me to bring back zongzi, you should try more later."

While saying it, she raised the zongzi in her hand for everyone inside and outside the room to see. After sufficiently showing off, she walked forward a few steps, ready to place the net bag on the table, only then noticing the big bag of zongzi already there from Lu Yiting.

She said somewhat sheepishly, "Younger Sister-in-law also brought back zongzi?"
