Chapter 539: Chapter 539 The Village Shrouded in Willows and Bright Flowers
Seeing Luo Qiao come in, Xu Yuqing said, "Thank you for saving me once again."
Luo Qiao didn’t respond to that but instead asked, "Feeling better?"
Xu Yuqing nodded and replied, "Much better."
At this point, Shifan joined the conversation, saying, "The doctor mentioned that she’ll be fine once the fever goes down. She just hasn’t been eating or resting well lately, but with proper care, she’ll recover."
Xu Yuqing said, "I heard everything from Shifan. Are you really going to let us stay in your house?"
Luo Qiao glanced at the other patients and their caretakers in the ward and suggested, "Let’s talk about that after you’re discharged from the hospital. For now, you should focus on getting better."
Xu Yuqing added, "After this IV drip, I’ll be discharged. The doctor said it’s nothing serious and that I should just rest well at home. It’s better to leave the hospital sooner."
Shifan, knowing his sister was worried about the cost of the hospital stay, chimed in, "Resting at home would be just as good."
Luo Qiao originally wanted to persuade them otherwise but also knew why they were resistant.
So, without drawing attention, Luo Qiao checked Xu Yuqing’s pulse, which was stable. Then Luo Qiao said, "Later, I’ll send you some traditional Chinese medicine to help you recover properly."
After completing the discharge formalities, Luo Qiao took the siblings to the house and upon opening the gates, they found the yard full of fallen leaves. Luo Qiao suggested, "No one has lived here since the renovation; you can clean up the courtyard at your leisure."
Upon taking them to the west wing, Luo Qiao showed them their rooms, "You can stay here—one room each. The room next door is the kitchen."
After having Shifan tidy up one of the west wing rooms, Luo Qiao fetched a stove from the opposite room. The back yard’s storage contained coal and firewood, and Luo Qiao quickly lit the stove, settled Xu Yuqing in, and while Shifan was cleaning the kitchen and the yard, Luo Qiao stepped out for a bit.
When Luo Qiao returned, there were several items being brought in—two sets of bedding, two sets of clothes to change into, a small bag of millet, and a packet of brown sugar.
Calling over to Shifan, Luo Qiao instructed, "Start by cooking some millet porridge for your sister, and when it’s ready, add some brown sugar to it—it’s nourishing."
Shifan took the items and hurried into the kitchen, keeping his head down to hide his emotion from Luo Qiao.
Only after Xu Yuqing had drunk the porridge did Luo Qiao ask, "What are your plans for the future?"
The siblings fell silent, and Luo Qiao added, "What would you say if I proposed that you work for me from now on? Would you be willing?"
Shifan, not expecting Luo Qiao to make such an offer, looked up decisively and responded, "We’re willing. You’ve saved us twice. My life, Xu Shifan’s, is yours—even if it means going through fire and water."
Luo Qiao replied with satisfaction, "I happen to need help by my side. If you don’t mind, come work with me. The salary and treatment won’t be worse than what you’d get working in a factory."
Xu Yuqing replied, "What my brother said aligns with my thoughts. Besides, we are at a dead end now. We’re truly grateful for your willingness to offer us shelter at this time. We will certainly do our best."
Luo Qiao then inquired, "Both of you graduated from high school. May I ask why you didn’t go to college?"
Xu Yuqing looked down and explained, "My stepmother said we couldn’t afford to send so many kids to school. The admission letters arrived when we weren’t home, and by the time we found out, they were gone."
"Would you still like to go to school?" Luo Qiao asked.
Upon hearing this, Shifan looked up at Luo Qiao and answered emphatically, "Yes."
Xu Yuqing also showed a look of longing but quickly remembered their situation and said, "Given how things are now, we don’t dare to hope."
Luo Qiao then proclaimed, "After the New Year, you can work for me while you study for the college entrance exams. Aim to get admitted next July. However, you must choose the majors I assign—accounting and finance."
"Really? It isn’t a dream?" Xu Yuqing asked.
Excited, Shifan stood up and exclaimed, "That’s actually what I wanted to study."
Luo Qiao then spent a lot of time discussing the current situation and short-term development goals. The siblings had never imagined they would find hope when all seemed lost.
After finalizing everything, Luo Qiao stepped out again and returned with more help, bringing plenty of items for the siblings so they could celebrate the New Year with peace of mind. Among the items were several packets of Chinese medications for Xu Yuqing’s health. Once everything was settled, Luo Qiao finally went back home.
