Chapter 238: Chapter 238 You Deserve Respect
Luo Qiao asked which stop she would be getting off at and thought about coming over early to help her unload her belongings, also telling her not to worry because she would come over to help her with her luggage when she got off. Only then did she prepare to take her leave.
Luo Qiao respected soldiers from the bottom of her heart, as well as these silently waiting military spouses. They kept the home fires burning while their husbands protected the country, making such a peaceful life possible.
As she turned to leave, she took out two eggs from her cross-body bag and placed them in the child’s hands before quickly walking away.
When Luo Qiao reached her own carriage, she saw a girl a bit older than herself sitting in her seat. She went over, carefully checked again, and was certain it was the correct place before she said, "Hello, this is my seat."
The girl glanced at Luo Qiao and, with a bit of embarrassment, said, "I saw no one here, so I just sat down. I’m sorry."
Luo Qiao smiled and said, "It’s okay."
The girl smiled, stood up, and asked, "My seat is over there?"
She pointed ahead where an old lady was sitting with a teenager. Luo Qiao instantly understood that the girl’s seat had been taken by the child. Luo Qiao gave a faint smile and said, "That child doesn’t seem to stay seated, so you might as well go and sit there for a while."
The girl nodded with a smile and walked in that direction. It was only two rows away. Luo Qiao sat down and glanced over, noticing the old lady casting sidelong looks in her direction.
The old lady was adamant in not letting her grandson give up the seat, saying she got there first and her grandson had always been sitting there, and also that he was too big for her to hold, making it inappropriate.
This remark made the surrounding people laugh. An auntie from behind chuckled and said, "Granny, you’re right that holding him is inappropriate, but you didn’t buy him a ticket at his size, and now you’re so boldly taking up someone else’s seat."
The old lady retorted, "Mind your own radishes and stop sticking your nose into other people’s business."
On hearing this, the auntie couldn’t hold back, "You’ve done wrong, and you won’t even let others talk about it? Is he not schooled? He doesn’t have any manners."
Now it was trouble, the old lady stood up and said, "Who are you to say has no manners? How is my grandson lacking in manners?"
The auntie stood her ground and replied, "Taking someone else’s seat and making such a fuss about it, if he were considerate and polite, he would have given up the seat by now."
Soon, the conductor arrived, and after understanding the situation, said to the old lady, "Ma’am, if your grandson doesn’t give up the seat, then you’ll have to pay for an additional ticket."
At the mention of buying another ticket, the old lady immediately disapproved, telling her grandson to vacate the seat. The girl who had been standing there somewhat conflicted, watched as the auntie who had spoken up for her became clear on the situation.
She turned to her husband and said, "You switch seats with this girl; you can sit up front."
The man looked at his wife, a bit helplessly saying, "Alright, your eagerness to help never changes, no matter where we are."
After the girl thanked them, she turned around, smiled at Luo Qiao, and took her seat.
The train roared along its way and, nearing noon, Luo Qiao thought of the mother and son. Considering it inconvenient for them to go to the dining car with a child, she took out a lunch box she had prepared ahead of time from her cross-body bag.
She got up and headed toward the carriage where the mother and son were. Passing through the connection between carriages and seeing no one at the doorway, she paused there for a moment. The lunch box now contained white porridge, and in her hand was an oil paper bag with a scallion pancake and two steamed buns mixed with some wheat and corn flour inside.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to bring out better things, but she was worried about drawing too much attention.
When the military spouse saw Luo Qiao approaching, she hurriedly smiled and said, "Sister."
Seeing what Luo Qiao had in her hands, she didn’t know what to say, her words coming out with a touch of awkwardness, "Big sister, what are you doing?"
Luo Qiao replied, "Sister-in-law, it’s inconvenient for you to get food with the child, so I’ve brought some over for you. Please don’t be polite with me. Without the sacrifices of soldiers, we wouldn’t have our happy lives. You all deserve respect, and it’s only right for me to do this."
The military spouse’s eyes reddened. It was the first time anyone had said such things to her. In the village, some even laughed at her for marrying a soldier; although she got an allowance, she had to deal with important and mundane matters without a man by her side.
But the words of this young woman now made her feel comforted. She felt that her man was protecting the country, and that she too should keep their little home safe, and pride welled up inside her.
She gratefully said, "Thank you, sister. My name is Tian Fang, and this is my son, Geng Jingjun, a name given by my husband."
Luo Qiao smiled at the child and asked, "Sister-in-law, did you bring a lunch box?"
Tian Fang replied, "Yes, I did, it’s in the bag below."
Luo Qiao placed the items on the small table, squatted down to pull out the bag to find the lunch box, and then pushed the bag back under the seat.
