Chapter 232: Chapter 232 Two Clear

Once the debt note was signed, Luo Qiao said, "I only have eighteen dollars on me. The rest will be covered by the items in this basket."

Yao Lili wouldn’t have it. "Luo Qiao, don’t fool people. Didn’t you win a lot of prize money? How can you not have money?"

The onlooking crowd, now even more disdainful of Yao Lili, could clearly see that she must have known Luo Qiao had the money and was scheming to trap her, leading to today’s scene.

Wu Peiling was now full of shame and annoyance, feeling sorry for Luo Qiao. Yet, she thought Luo Qiao shouldn’t have stopped her from intervening today. She didn’t know how Uncle Yao would react when he got back, nor could she imagine how today’s events would be spread.

Luo Qiao said, "The things in my basket are worth more than that amount of money. Are you sure they can’t cover the four dollars and forty-four cents?"

Yao Lili said, "I only want cash, no tricks."

Luo Qiao turned to address the crowd watching the commotion: "Ladies, aunties, big sisters, sister-in-laws, I have some vegetables in my basket along with eggs and two fish. Let’s see if anyone needs them and would exchange them for money, so we can benefit each other a bit."

An old lady asked, "Girl, what exactly do you have in that basket? My son and daughter-in-law are coming over for dinner tonight; it’d save me a trip to go out."

Luo Qiao smiled and said, "Old lady, I have two fish and ten eggs, the rest are all vegetables."

The old lady beamed and said, "That’s great, I’ll take all ten eggs, perfect for nourishing my grandson. Wow, these eggs are quite big. I’ll go get a bowl."

With that, she turned and went home to fetch a bowl. Her house was right next to the Yao family’s, and she shortly returned with a large bowl and a basket.

Yao Lili did not expect Luo Qiao’s basket to contain eggs and fish and was so angry her eyes reddened.

The old lady deftly picked out the ten eggs into her bowl, then, after looking at the vegetables, took some of each type: "These veggies are really fresh."

The woman who was the first to testify for Luo Qiao also said, "Then I won’t need to go out either, let’s see what else I can take."

The two quickly finished dividing the contents of the basket. The onlookers, seeing the fresh vegetables and wanting some, were too late; only two fish remained at the bottom. The fish were not small, each probably weighing just over two pounds, just right for the old lady and the sister-in-law to take one each.

All the vegetables were priced at ten cents per pound, totaling up to ten pounds of vegetables for one dollar. The eggs were eight cents each, ten for eighty cents. Together, the vegetables and eggs totaled one dollar and eighty cents.

The remaining two fish were agreed to be priced as if they were two pounds each, but both women knew they weighed more. Priced at seventy cents per pound, the two fish came to two dollars and eighty cents. In total, four dollars and sixty cents.

Adding the eighteen dollars in her pocket, the total came to twenty-two dollars and sixty cents. Setting aside a cent in her pocket, Luo Qiao counted the money in front of everyone, handed it to Yao Lili, and said, "We’re even now."

Yao Lili took the money and counted it again, saying, "You’re sensible."

Luo Qiao bowed to everyone and said, "Thank you all for witnessing today’s matter."

Then she turned to Wu Peiling, "Auntie, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving. I still have things to handle."

Wu Peiling’s feelings were mixed. "Are you heading back to Qingshan Village today? But those two people are still looking for you. I always feel they might come back again."

Luo Qiao said, "It’s fine, auntie. If they come, just send them away. They’re only looking for me to get me to back down and stop pursuing the matter. But they wanted to do me in, so I can’t generously act as if nothing happened.

"Don’t worry, auntie. It’s a society ruled by law now, and everyone is equal before the law. It’s not up to me to decide. What’s wrong is wrong, and if everyone could get off with just an apology, what would be the point of the law?"

Wu Peiling said, "Luo Qiao, about today’s incident..."

Before Wu Peiling could finish, Luo Qiao said, "Auntie, it’s actually for the best. I know you’re both nervous as well. I’ll keep in mind the kindness you and Uncle Yao have shown me, but it’s only towards you and Uncle Yao."

For Luo Qiao herself, this outcome was quite satisfactory. Problems that could be solved with money weren’t really problems, of course, provided one had the money, haha!
