Chapter 109: Chapter 109 Seeking Another Way Out
Luo Qiao finished tidying up before she began her daily studies, and upon seeing the newspapers and magazines, an idea suddenly struck her. Right, why hadn’t she thought of that before? These too could be a path for her.
After all, she had a background in fine arts, she could illustrate for magazines, or even try writing something to be published. That way, she would have a source of income, and in the future, supporting Stone would have a justifiable reason.
Ah, that was a good idea, but she didn’t know if her drawings would catch the editors’ eyes, but how would she know without trying?
She immediately took the writing paper sent by Grandpa Yuan and began by replying to letters from the Yuan and Yang families, telling them that everything was fine with her and that she would be starting high school in the second half of the year, so they needn’t worry.
After finishing the letters and putting them aside, she thought about what to include with them when she mailed them. If not, she could send some of the mushrooms and dried vegetables she air-dried days ago; rehydrated, they made dishes taste exceptional, and they would surely love it once they tasted it.
Though the items were not valuable, they still represented some of her thoughts and care. With that settled, she finally began to ponder what to draw and send out.
After much contemplation, she thought it best to test the waters with some fables paired with illustrations—at worst, it would not be a waste of time and effort even if unsuccessful.
She only had regular pencils, no colored ones, but that would suffice. In one night, she penned two fables, neither too long, with simple illustrations that she crafted with extra care.
Once completed, she put them away, planning to find time to send them off to the commune, and also thought about making a trip to the city if she had time, to invest in professional drawing supplies—if she wanted to earn a living from this, she had to be willing to invest.
The next morning, Luo Qiao packed the items she was going to send to the Yuan and Yang families, planning to make a run to the commune by noon, the sooner they were sent, the sooner she would get results.
After finishing her work at noon, Luo Qiao hurriedly ate her meal and set off for the commune. She first sent the parcels with letters to the Yuan and Yang families, then mailed the fables with illustrations she had completed the previous night to the magazine and newspaper agencies.
She also stopped by the supply and marketing co-op to buy some more ordinary pencils and paper since that was all the co-op in the commune offered, and she would have to go to the city for professional materials.
Back in the village, she ran into Li Xiulan at the bridge. Full of warmth, Li Xiulan approached Luo Qiao: "Luo Qiao, where have you been?"
Luo Qiao didn’t like Li Xiulan much, but with so many people at the bridge, it wasn’t appropriate to show it too much, so she replied, "I went to send a letter, Aunt. I haven’t had lunch yet, so I’ll be heading home first."
She didn’t want to stay there, subject to the crowd’s probing questions; she quickly found an excuse and left.
The group of inquisitive women were left disappointed. Li Xiulan smiled and said, "Then hurry back, you have work in the afternoon."
Luo Qiao greeted the aunts and elder ladies by the bridge before she left.
One woman spoke up: "Li Xiulan, why are you so polite today? That’s not like you."
Li Xiulan replied, "It was Luo Qiao who saved Shunyi’s life. It’s certain that from now on, I’ll have to look out for Luo Qiao a bit more. This is what you call gratitude."
The woman retorted, "You, knowing gratitude? I wonder what ulterior motive you have."
Li Xiulan wasn’t offended by the woman’s words. After all, Luo Qiao would become a member of the Gao Family in the future, and there would come a time when they would envy her.
Another woman said, "Xiulan, since you said that Luo Qiao saved your Gao Shunyi, I haven’t seen your family send anything to thank her. Talking about gratitude is useless if it’s all just lip service."
