Chapter 108: The Package Turmoil

Chapter 108: Chapter 108: The Package Turmoil

Zhao Xiaocao said, "It’s all because Mom didn’t do the math right. If we had acknowledged Luo Qiao from the start, not only would we have someone earning work points for the household, but everything that happened last time would have made sense. Now look at us, we’ve suffered a loss for nothing."

Zhao Pulin said, "You’ve got food to eat and yet you still can’t keep your mouths shut."

It wasn’t just their family that had their eyes on Luo Qiao; as Li Xiulan’s eldest daughter-in-law Feng Xiaojuan came in, she scooped up a gourd ladle of water from the jar, gulped it down ’glug glug’, wiped her mouth, and plopped down onto a bench in the courtyard.

She began, "Mom, I just heard on my way back that the orphan girl in the village received two big packages. There’s not a single person in the village who isn’t jealous."

Li Xiulan glanced sideways and asked, "What did you say?"

Feng Xiaojuan repeated herself, "It’s that orphan girl the Zhao Family didn’t recognize. The brigade commander just said she got two big packages mailed from Capital City. Who would have thought that Luo Qiao had such connections without making a sound?"

Li Xiulan suddenly couldn’t sit still, turning her eyes this way and that for quite a while before heading into the house.

Once inside, she looked at Gao Shunyi, who was still lying on the kang bed, "Dad, I think we can’t wait any longer regarding our third son and Luo Qiao. The eldest daughter-in-law just mentioned that girl received two large packages.

Now there’ll definitely be more families in the village making a move on Luo Qiao; if we wait any longer, we might let someone else beat us to it."

Gao Shunyi was silent for a while before saying, "That’s fine, but we need a proper reason, otherwise the village will say we’re bullying her."

Li Xiulan smiled, "Dad, have you forgotten that Luo Qiao saved your life? She’s the lifesaver of our Gao Family. It’s only right for us to take care of her a little more.

To repay her, we should have our third son betrothed to her; that would make it easier to look after her in the future. Who could fault us for that reason? Don’t forget, she’s just an orphan; what more can she expect?"

Gao Shunyi remarked, "That reason is a bit far-fetched, but it’s passable."

After Luo Qiao got home, she thanked the scorekeeper who helped her with the packages, and didn’t forget to stuff a handful of dried red dates into his hand. After sending him off and locking the courtyard gate, she stored the two packages in her space, planning to cook first and then look at the packages.

She steamed a big pot of rice in the space, which could be stored and eaten over several meals, since sometimes she truly didn’t feel like cooking after finishing work. The garlic oil wheat dish from yesterday was not bad, so she made a simplified version of Kung Pao chicken.

After eating, she finally opened the packages. Grandpa Yuan had mailed her two cans of Mai Ru Jing, two bags of milk powder, a set of white shirts with red dots, a pair of black trousers, and inside there was also a pair of black leather shoes.

Below that were several magazines, a stack of newspapers, two notebooks, and some small miscellaneous items, along with a letter telling her to talk to them if she encountered any difficulties.

They also asked if she was willing to move to Beijing and left a telephone number for her inside.

Grandpa Yang and Grandma Yang also sent a lot of nourishing goods: Mai Ru Jing, White Rabbit milk candies, and two cans of meat. The letter that came with the package included quite a few coupons, all of which were national military vouchers.

At the bottom of the package, there were two pieces of fabric and a pair of white sneakers, telling her to take some time to make clothes out of them and to dress well for school.

Luo Qiao felt a warm feeling inside as she gazed at those items. Her heart was filled with mixed emotions; she felt like a little thief who had stolen someone else’s happiness, basking in the care and concern that should have belonged to another.

After sitting with her thoughts for a long time, she sighed and thought that since everything had been sent, she would accept it. She remembered this kindness and would definitely repay them when she had the chance.

She considered sending smoked fish and cured fish back to express her gratitude, but it definitely wasn’t feasible now, with the weather being too hot and the lack of vacuum packaging, she feared it would spoil by the time it reached Capital City.
