Chapter 1022: Chapter 1022: Something Feels Off

Everyone looked toward the front of the vehicle, and the driver turned to the people inside and said, "There’s someone flagging us down ahead."

The driver, thankfully, was cautious; he did not open the door but instead asked through the window, "Fellow, what’s the matter with stopping the car?"

Someone hurriedly came forward, "Someone in our village broke their leg and urgently needs to get to the health facility. We’re really sorry about this."

Upon hearing this, the people inside the vehicle felt that they couldn’t just ignore it, and the local officials also spoke up, "Can we help take a look?"

Several doctors seated at the front got out of the vehicle to examine the injury, "Indeed, it’s quite serious and needs immediate attention."

But the vehicle only had medicine to stop bleeding; there were no surgical tools. In the end, they could only stop the bleeding before lifting the injured person onto the vehicle, planning to take them to the nearest commune health facility.

However, as soon as the person was aboard, Luo Qiao felt something was amiss. Besides the injured person, five men boarded, three of whom were dressed like villagers, but their demeanors and gazes were definitely not those of village folk.

Luo Qiao became alert in an instant.

Unexpectedly, she guessed right. The vehicle hadn’t been on the move for long before those three individuals sprang into action, one beside the driver, one at the rear of the vehicle, and another in the middle.

The man at the front pulled out a knife and forced the driver to head along the road he pointed to; the driver had no choice but to comply.

The two local comrades responsible for escorting the group of experts were sweating profusely. If anything happened to the experts on their watch, dying several times over wouldn’t make up for it.

They tried to muster their courage and negotiate with the men, but those were not the kind to speak reasonably. Annoyed by the talking, they beat the person who tried to negotiate, "Shut your mouth or I’ll silence you permanently."

Professor Guo was about to speak up when Luo Qiao pulled him back. If the man attacked, Professor Guo was of advanced age and wouldn’t be able to withstand it; he might very well perish right there.

She could handle these three men alone, but with each in a different part of the vehicle, she was afraid a mistake might injure others inside.

Just as she was figuring out what to do, she noticed the vehicle climb up a mountainous path. Half an hour later, she saw a jeep without plates parked ahead, and the man at the front motioned with the knife for the driver to pull over.

As the man made a large movement, Luo Qiao caught sight of the firearm hidden under his jacket at his waist, making her even more cautious. A misstep could mean innocent lives would be at stake.

The bus stopped, and the men, likely trying not to give themselves away, ordered everyone on the bus to get off. Originally, besides the driver, there were nine expert group members and two local staff on the vehicle. Now, there were three additional villagers, but the main concern was Old Zhang’s leg, which could result in a disability if not treated promptly.

Now that everyone was being forced off the vehicle, Luo Qiao kept thinking, who exactly were these people, and why were they hijacking their bus? Was it a coincidence or a conspiracy?

At this moment, the man who had controlled the driver revealed his hidden weapon, "Get down on your knees, or I will kill you all."

The other two men surprisingly started conversing in Italian, which Luo Qiao understood clearly. They were sent by the Jun family with the sole purpose of seizing her as bait, then luring the Lu family and the Gu family to come for a rescue.

These men had taken everyone to avoid suspicion falling on the Jun family. It turned out that she was to blame for involving everyone; it seemed that she needed to find a way to separate herself from the group so they could be safe.

Luo Qiao overheard the two discussing that for safety’s sake, they should ’take care’ of these people.

Upon hearing this, Luo Qiao’s eyes filled with cold resolve. The small confines of the bus had been disadvantageous for action. Though now was not the ideal moment to strike, if they dared make a move, then she would have to give her all to protect everyone, considering most of the expert group, aside from her, were over fifty years old.

And the two local staff members were clearly unskilled in combat. Probably only the two villagers who had helped bring the injured aboard appeared to be strong and healthy could aid her.
